looking for a home remedy for dog ear infection?
can anybody suggest a cheap home remedy for a dogs ear infection? I have a cocker spaniel and she has some kind of ear infection but I am out of work so I am trying to avoid taking her to the expenisive vet.
Has anybody had any luck with any home remedies for this? I have tried putting the fluids from a couple of vit. E capsules in her ear but I am not sure if it has worked or not...I have only just did this yesterday though.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.

    • ANSWER:
There is NO home remedy - you need to get your dog to the vet, have the ear infection identified -- could be a yeast infection, could be ear mites.

The vet will then give you the proper treatment for the problem.

This is not expensive and absolutely necessary. Ear infections don't go away with home remedies, you've just made it worse with the E capsule.
This isn't an option, it is absolutely necessary to get your dog treated by a vet - ear infections are painful, itch like mad, and can cause deafness and worse for your dog.

Get that dog to the vet -- doesn't cost that much for the infection to be identified and the right medication given.

Home remedy for a dog with an ear infection?
I have a rat terrier mix and she is already on 2 types of medication for seizures but she has an ear infection. I was wondering if there is a safe home remedy cure because the vet is expensive and it doesn't help when they try to rip you off. Any safe remedies?

    Thank you

    • ANSWER:
Depends on the type of ear infection.
If it is a yeast infection then you can use an over the counter "feminine" yeast infection product. Just a small amount (like a pea size) and rub it into ears, also clean out the ear gunk (will be brownish/reddish and SMELLY) with q-tips.

If it is just a basic ear infection you can squirt a little diluted vinegar (50/50 vinegar to water) into the ear and then clean it out with q-tips.

If it's ear mites then check at your local pet store or grocery store and there should be an over the counter medication that's about .

I would also suggest calling and asking the vet what at home remedies they would recommend, sometimes they can help and will understand the financial strain.

      GOOD LUCK!!!

Looking for a safe less expensive alternative to help your pet does not mean you love them any less. Also, just because you could 'afford' them in the beginning doesn't mean you always will be able to, sh*t happens, there is no shame in finding an alternative it does not make you any less of a responsible dog owner.

Any home remedy to an ear infections that someone might recommend?
Every 6 months or so I get an ear infection and I can't keep going to the doctor as I don't have health insurance. This started happening after moving to a different climate and until I am able to move somewhere else I need some home remedies to help me get rid of ear infections when they pop up. PLEASE help me with this as it is getting very old to have to go to the doctor for such a thing every 6 months. Thanks a lot!

What are some home remedies for ear ache or ear infection?
My fiance has a ear infection we belive and we are wondering what some home remedies are that we could try.

    • ANSWER:
I had strep throat last year and an ear ache. I put a small piece of pealed garlic on a thin piece of gauze and stuck it in my ear for a few minutes. It relieved the pain while it was in there. I didn't leave it in for long because I've heard that raw garlic can burn the skin.

You could also cut a raw onion in half, place a paper towel over it and hold it to the ear or lay on it. Onion draws.

Warmth helps. Use a heating pad.

    • ANSWER:
Your dog needs to be seen by the vet to find out what he actually has. The vet can then prescribe the correct medication which will actually help this poor dog. Don't you know that ear infections are very, very painful? Get him to the vet.

Is there a home remedy to cure a canine ear infection?
Our black lab has had an ear infection on and off for a long time regarless of what drops the vet has given us. What is a good home remedy for ear infections?
My dog is showing all the symptoms of a minor ear infection and before putting her through a car ride and trip to the vet's office, does anyone know of any good home remedies for the treatment of ear infections?
(If it matters, my dog is an 85 lbs American Pit Bull Terrier with no prior history of ear problems)

    • ANSWER:
Unfortunately, if she has an ear infection, you would be better off taking her to the vet. She most likely will need antibiotics to fight the infection. In the future, you could wipe out her ears with a 1 to 10 solution of vinegar and water to keep them clean. Only wipe the outer ear with a cotton ball; any further in and you can cause damage to her ear. It usually isn't too expensive to treat the infection, either.

I think that I have a ear infection in my right ear?
My right ear has lots of pressure and it really hurts. I think I have an ear infection, any home remedies that I should try?

    • ANSWER:
I have had a bunch of them. You will need to see a doctor. They can cause serious hearing damage. Not to mention the fact that it is real close to the brain. In the time being do not stick anything in the ear. Until you see a doctor you can do a couple of things stop drinking cold beverages. Room temp, warm or hot only. The cause of a lot of ear infections a throat infection or a Eustachian tub blockage causing fluid that would normally wash out the middle ear backs up and bacteria takes hold.
If you are a minor you can use saline nasal spray to help clear you sinus until the doctor sees you.
I would tell you if you are an adult to us Afrin nasal spray as it works to me but it is harsh and your doctor may prefer you didn't. That does help me but we are all different and it is harsh it can cause a nose bleed. But it opens up the sinus and the Eustachian tubes which will allow the ear to drain.
Everybody laughs at this but I swear by it. CHICKEN SOUP what ever kind you like Fresh if possible but canned will do. It is hot which helps to clear you throat and they don't call it Jewish Penicillin for nothing. My preference is Matzo Ball soup.

Hopes this helps I do the above before it gets bad and it cut way back on the problem.
Oh if your and adult antihistamines and the pain reliever of your choice will help.

Are there any home remedies for ear infections?
I think I have an ear infection, but don't have insurance...are there any home remedies to get rid of it, without antibiotics?

    • ANSWER:
Ear coning works really well. coningworks.com. The lady that runs this site is very good at what she does. Please don't be tempted to get Wally's ear cones they will make your symptoms worse.

Another thing is to get Astragalus. Three capsules twice a day and it should clear up very quickly. Health food stores and Asian markets will carry this.

The last thing is really the best but nastiest to take. Get some Cayenne capsules from the health food store, break one open in a mug, add a teaspoon of honey and a small amount of lemon juice and drink as a tea. Do that every 4 hours and your ear infection should be cleared up in 12 to 18 hours.

Are there any home remedies for ear infections in babies?
My nine month old son has an ear infection in both ears. He has done two treatments of antibiotics and they haven't phased it. We were supposed to have a follow up appointment on Tuesday but our insurance coverage ( we have insurance through the state) ended on Friday. We are waiting for an appointment to get our insurance back, but I don't want my son to have to suffer until then. I found several home remedies for adults but I couldn't find any for babies or children. Please any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, and i know that i will get some thumbs down for this but i don't care. Breastmilk.

Make the appointment. Insurance will go back and should cover over the last 30 days. Also make sure baby isn't eating laying down or taking a bottle to bed.

Any home remedies for pain from an ear infection?
My three year old has ear infection and is in pain. Anything I can do for her besides Tylenol? Any home remedies?

    • ANSWER:
When I was little I had a ton of ear infections. I would have use some RX drops. But I would lay on a heating pad until the the abscess would burst. This would relieve the pressure and make the pain go away. It was the best feeling and I would be 100% better. Some say if you use oil drops along with the heating pad it works well.

I will tell you this.....if your child keeps getting ear infections please see a ear specialist. My mother had the chance to put tubes in my ears and did not so I kept getting the infections until I was about 10 and now I have hearing loss in one of my ears. Not that it impairs me but I would not have had gone though the pain the years before.

      Good Luck

Best way to treat ear infection without going to the doctor?
I think i have an ear infection because my ear is always getting irritated.
Any special home remedy's or anything that can help my ear? I think there is ear wax in it to because sometimes it gets clogged up. Ive tried hydrogen peroxide but it havn''t helped much.

So if anyone can suggest anything that would be great thanks!

    • ANSWER:
you may hear a lot of old wives tales on how to cure an ear infection, While working house to house my colleague had an ear infection and each person had a remedy, one was to put a warm spring onion in the ear, the other was to tie stockings around her head and many other like that some of the oddest things i have ever heard. The only real way to deal with an infection is to take antibiotics.

in the case of ear wax vegetable oil can (don't worry this one is actually true) loosen the wax, if you feel your ears are blocked it may be a good idea to ask a doctor about syringing your ears, this is a very pain free procedure. try not to use cotton buds as this forces the wax to the bottom of the ear canal.

An ear infection that is severe can cause you a balance issue and can damage the ear drum.

Does anyone know any home remedies to help an ear infection or at least lessen the pain?

How to treat an ear infection at home?
Well, I've been sick for about a week and a half now. I feel like I have an ear infection.. I told my mom and she's just like okay, whatever. I heard that you could go deaf if you leave an ear infection untreated which is a little bit scary but it doesn't really look like my mom cares, so I doubt I'll be going to the doctor. So, Is there any home remedies to treat an ear infection?

    • ANSWER:
If its really painful I'd really try to get your mom to take you. I had a bad one a few weeks ago and I got antibiotics for it and it went away pretty fast.

If you mom won't take you, maybe you could ask a friend's mom to take you? Its worth it if you are getting terrible headaches like I was.

Can anyone give me some good home remedies for an ear infection?
For the past two days I've had a crazy painful ear infection. I have an appointment with my dr. in 2 days. However, I cannot bear the pain and was wondering if anyone has any good home remedies. I was told heat relieves the pain, but doesn't heat cause bacteria to grow? Here are some of my symptoms:
-Pain when i move my jaw or tug my lobe
-"plugged" ear (as if I'm wearing an ear plug in the infected ear.)
    -clear discharge

    • ANSWER:
have someone blow smoke in your ear----this is Not a joke

How do you know if your dog has an ear infection or ear mites?
I have a female Queensland Terrier Mix that's almost 2 years old. Today she kept on shaking her head and crying when she scratched her right ear. I took a closer look and saw there was some ear drainage and red spots (inflammation) in her ear. Could it be ear mites have invaded her ears? or just an ear infection? Are there any home remedies without going to the vet paying a high bill?

    • ANSWER:
If you choose to own a pet then it's your responsibilty to take care of their health needs. Take her to a vet...If she crying then she is hurting!!!

How do you treat an ear infection that is also causing you to be off balance?
I have an ear infection otitis and I feel off balance is there any home remedies I can try to treat it?

    • ANSWER:
No home remedies I can think of, but I just got over a really bad ear infection. I went to the walk-in clinic and the doctor prescribed me some antibiotics. 875 mg tablets of Amoxicillin. Go to your doctor or a walk-in clinic and get it taken care of because this is definitely an infection that doesn't go away on its own.

I have an ear infection, what can I do to ease the discomfort and pain?
I have an ear infection and the pain/pressure is unbearable. Any home remedies would be appreciated. I have already gone and seen a doctor and all she gave me was Floxin ear drops. I have taken Oxycodone, that worked for a little bit until it made me puke. Ibprofen 800's seemed to kind of work too. So did heat. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Please help.
Oh my there are so many good answers I don't know how I will chose the best. Maybe I will start trying some remedies and pick the one that works the best.
There are so many good answers. I have been taking plenty of showers and soaking my ear in hot water. I have been using a heating pad. I think the main thing I need to do is quit playing with it as suggested by one of the people who answered. The pee thing is a bit out there, but it sounds like one of those bizzare things that really do work. I just don't know how I would get the pee in my ear and plus I've been using prescribed ear drops which I don't want to screw up. I have heard of the smoke thing too. I remember seeing a cone thing in a store a while back that you light on fire and then blow out and it funnels the smoke into your ear, I just can't find it now. But the most common answer seems to be heat in oil and putting that in there with a q-tip so I might try that inbetween ear drops. Well thanks for the great answers everybody. I greatly appreciate your help. I kind of suck being able to only chose one best answer, especially with so many great responses.

    • ANSWER:
Most importantly... stop messing with it!!!

It's so easy to just poke at it and stick your finger in there, but take it from one who has had many ear infections, RESIST THE TEMPTATION.

Take the maximum painkillers available and try to sleep if you can. If not, I find that being in the open air eases the pressure.

What can i take for my ear infection besides antibiotics?
Currently, I can't take antibiotics because I have a yeast infection right now. I've been having the yeast infection for 3 months already and I'm finally getting it tackled.

I do not want to take antibiotics, because of course antibiotics makes a yeast infection worst. I do not want to go through this again. But neither do I want an ear infection because those are very severe. Including I kind of have anxiety issues too so that kind of might trigger my ear infection a bit because stress or anxiety affects your immune system, but im working on it.

Sorry for too much writing but in short words do you guys know any home remedies or anything that isn't an antibiotic that can treat an ear infection? because its already going down my throat and the ear drops aren't effective

    • ANSWER:
I empathize with you, dealing with two competing medical problems simultaneously. I've been there (with different issues then yours, obviously).

There are some home remedies for outer ear infections, but if the drops are failing that means it's probably inner ear. You'll have to see a doctor, or doctors. Y!A won't do it here. Everything becomes very different when dealing with multiple infections.

Only a doctor can help you balance the pluses and minuses, and understand the risks of possible treatments. Some ear infections can lead to complete hearing loss, and so might be worth the antibiotics and misery. Perhaps an ear/nose/throat doctor has some way of getting the drops to where they're needed, or at least to clean out the ear.

Or (cross your fingers) you may find out the infection is trivial, which will alleviate both the dilemma and the stress.

      Best of luck with this.

Home remedy for bacterial infection in the ears ?
My two dogs have bacterial ear infections and I am almost out of their ear drops. I need a home remedy to relieve of the itching my dogs are dealing with. I'm hoping somone else out there has had this going on with their dog before.

    • ANSWER:
1 part apple cider vinegar (healing agent)
1 part rubbing alcohol (drying agent)
      1 part water ( a dilution)

This stuff burns but it works. Fill ear canal with mixture & massage the base of the ear to loosen any debri that may have accumlated in there. After massage allow dog to shake it's head. Apply once more the same way & allow dog to shake head. Clean out what you can see with a paper towel or Q-tip or cotton ball.

Apply 2 to 3 times daily.

This recipe was given to me by a Vet that practiced alternative medicine.

I have a chow X that has chronic ear infections in one ear. Vet. meds. didn't help. I use this mixture as a general ear cleaner on all my dogs & cats.

What are some ways to treat a ear infection with out medicine?
I have a double ear infection, But I am on a lot of medicines now. I just had a baby last month and had a c section. I am wanting to know if there are some home remedies for ear infection?

    • ANSWER:
The goals for treating ear infections include relieving pain, curing the infection, preventing complications, and preventing recurrent ear infections. Most ear infections will safely clear up on their own without antibiotics. Often, treating the pain and allowing the body time to heal itself is all that is needed:

Apply a warm cloth or warm water bottle.
Use over-the-counter pain relief drops for ears.
Take over-the counter medications for pain or fever, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. DO NOT give aspirin to children.
Use prescription ear drops to relieve pain.

HOME remedies for a 3year old boy with an ear infection?
My 3Year old has an ear infection in his right ear.. We have already taken him to the doctor and she prescribed a med called omnicef. i know most dr.s would have prescribed amoxicillin and have no clue as to why we got a different med. but either way..the combination of this med and tylenol is not working at all..and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as far as home remedies? before anyone suggests...i do not have access to a heating pad. :( thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
How long has the child been on Omnicef? Usually Omnicef works the best on my soon to be 3 year old, But people react differently to medicines and things. If the child has been on the medicine for more then 2-3 days and it has not helped I would suggest taking him back to the doctor because the Omnicef may not be working right and they may have to change up the antibiotic. If the child is running a high Temp. Alternate Tylenol and Motrin and that works best when I do that for my son* But as far as home remedies go I don't know of any just plenty of rest and keep the child's ear cleaned out as the infection will most likely drain. If it has been less" then 2-3 days give the antibiotic a little bit more time to work and run its method of working because sometimes it takes a few days for it to kick in. Be sure the child takes all of the antibiotic or it wont work right... Unless its switched by the doctor then discard the medicine and continue the new Medicine Prescribed. Don't miss any doses of medication... And maybe if you take the child back to the pediatrician maybe" they will prescribe ear drops... Sometimes it just takes antibiotic to the direct ear" Good Luck and I hope your little one feels better soon!!!

How do I cure my dogs ear infection?
My cocker spaniel has some kind of ear infection, we can't really afford to take her to the vets, she constantly is itching her ears and they smell awful no matter how much we wash her. Is there any home remedies that can help or anything I can buy?

    • ANSWER:
If she does have an Ear Infection, then the only thing that is going to get rid of it, is Antibiotics and only a vet can give them to you. Ear Infections are very painful and if you don't have them properly treated by a vet, your dog can go deaf in one or both ears. There are No Home Remedies for Ear Infections and if you mess around with your dogs ears yourself and start putting medication or anything in your dogs ears, you will cause more pain, you will cause more damage and you can cause your dog to go deaf. You have no choice but to take your poor dog to the vet and you better do it soon. It's cruel, inhumane and Against The Law to allow an animal to suffer in pain and not provide it with proper veterinary care. Most vets work out payment plans with you, so you can pay them for treating your dog later. Emergency Vets are open 24/7 including holidays, so you can take her there. Have a Happy New Year.

What kind of home remedies are there for a clogged ear?
About a week ago I developed what I think was some kind of flu. A few days after getting sick, I got an ear infection. I had planned on riding out the sickness on my own until the ear infection. So I called my doctor and had him call me in a Z Pack (Zythromax).

I've finished the antibiotics, but my ear still feels clogged. There's no pain at all, just a clogged feeling and muffled hearing out of that ear.

Does anyone know of any kind of home remedies that could help me out?

    • ANSWER:
Get some sweet oil....it comes in a little 2 fl oz bottle for like a dollar something at walmart...what I usually do is pour just a little bit into a spoon and heat it a little bit...not much though ( you dont want to burn your ear) and pour it into your ear. Let it sit in there for a little bit and then let it drain out.....it will break up what ever is in there. If you dont want to do the sweet oil...try laying on a heat pack. That should also help break up what ever is stuck inside of your ear. I would opt for the sweet oil thought as it has worked many times for me in the past.

Anyone know a natural way to cure a dogs ear infection?
I have a dog that gets chronic ear infections. Would like to know if anyone has a home remedy to either prevent them or cure them.

    • ANSWER:
Yeast is easily controlled with either rubbing alcohol or white vinegar or a combination of the two. I prefer rubbing alcohol. If you clean the dogs ears with it a couple of times a week the yeast (infections) will not regrow.

What are some good home remedies for an ear ache?
I have an ear ache. Which is weird cause I used to get a lot of ear aches/ear infections as a child and I haven't had an ear ache for a long time. Our county fair is in town this week and it was a little chilly and windy yesterday and we went to a outdoor concert last night so I was out in the cold/windy air. Could the wind have caused the ear ache? When I swallow then my ear hurts, when I touch it then it feels bruised, and its also giving me a headache. I tried Murine Ear drops but that didn't help. Are there any home remedies I could try? I would like to at least try to get rid of my ear ache myself without going to the doctor.

    • ANSWER:
Prop up your head slightly while you sleep.

Try a hair dryer... hold a dryer 18 to 20 inches from the ear and aim that warm air into your ear (make sure the dryer is in a low WARM not HOT setting).

Place a bottle of baby oil or mineral oil in a pan of hot (not boiling) water. Let the oil sit in the water until it becomes hot. Place a drop or two of oil in the ear. It will help lessen the pain.

Chew a wad of gum. I'm sure you've heard of people telling you to do so to help with pressure in the ears on plane flights.

Mullein is an herbal folklore remedy for earaches.

Wiggle your outer ear. Does it hurt? If it does, you definitely have an infection. If not, you may still have an infection. All of the above can give you relief, but not a cure. Infections should never be ignored.

My sister had a 4 to 5 month old kitten and she thinks she has an ear infection.?
She is going to take it to the vet next week when she gets paid. Her boyfriend isnt working and they have no money at all to take her now. Are there any home remedies for an ear infection? Or something not too expensive to buy at say petsmart or petco? The kitty is scratching her ear alot and shaking her head and rubbing her ear on things. Thanks for any help on this.

    • ANSWER:
Look down in the kitten's ear. If there's a black looking build up, it's caused by ear mites, a tiny parasite that causes the ears to itch and makes the gunky buildup. She can get a liquid ear mite treatment from a pet supply store. You just have to clean the ears really well with it and then use drops like a couple of times a month to prevent it from coming back. She should still try to see a vet for shots and things when she can afford it but I know vets can be expensive.

Besides going to the doctors, what can I do for an ear infection?
I don't have any health insurance and can't afford a doctor's visit and the antibiotics that he'd surely give, so I was wondering if anyone knew of any home remedies for ear infections. I tried a painkiller but of course it did nothing. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Again, for those who said the doctors, I can't. I have no way to get the money right now due to financial difficulties. Trust me, it would be the first thing I did if I could. So no more suggestions for the doctors please. :(
I'm not sure if there are any free health clinics where I live but I will definitely check. Thank you all for your help, I really appreciate it.

Ear infection always warrant antibiotics especially middle ear.

Try to go to any Mexican store, they usually sell Amoxicilliin there.

      Take Amoxicillin 500mg/tab 3x a day for 7 days.

Now youre free of doctor's fee, spend your money on antibiotics.

Can you please help?? i need some home remedies.

    • ANSWER:
There are treatments that can help clear your infeection and dry up your ear. Treatment can also heal the hole in your eardrum. But without the right treatment, you risk having your hearing damageed by the infectionn. Unfortunately, this kind of long-term ear infectionn is not always simple to treat.

If you have an ear infectionn with discharge, you'll probably first have your ear cleaned by a specialist doctor or a nurse. Cleaning your ears helps clear out the pus.

You're likely to be treated with ear drops. Ear drops containing a type of antibiotics called quinolones seem to work best. Taking antibiotics as tablets is unlikely to help.

Sometimes the hole in your eardrum might not heal up, even with antibiotics. If this happens, you can have an operation to fix your eardrum.

We look closely at the research and usually rank treatments into categories according to whether they work. But there's not much research on treating ear infectionn with discharge. All these treatments need further study.

      Ear cleaning

Before you start treatment with ear drops, you'll probably have your ear cleaned out by a specialist doctor or nurse. The cleaning gets rid of the bits of skin and pus that are blocking your ear so that the ear drops cann get throough to thhe infectiion. But we don't know for certain whether ear cleaning is helpful. There's not much good-quality research.

There are different ways to have your ear cleaned. A doctor might:

Clean your ear canal with cotton buds
Put a string made of gauze (a type of thin material) into your ear canal
Flush your ear out with sterile (germ-free) salt water
Use a machine to gently suck out the bits of skin and pus from your ear.
Some doctors have looked at whether just having your ears cleaned, without having ear drops, caan clear uup the inffection. WWe found ttwo studiees that loooked at cchildren wwith this infectionn who had their ears cleaned.1 2 The studies didn't show that ear cleaning helped. But the studies were not very good-quality, so it's hard to say for certain whether ear cleaning can help or not.

We couldn't find any studies on ear cleaning for adults.

The studies don't tell us if ear cleaning can be harmful. But ear cleaning should always be done by a specialist doctor or nurse. You shouldn't put anything into your ear canal yourself, even to clean it. You could damage your ear.

      Antibiotic ear drops

Ear drops that contain a type of antibiotic called quinolones can dry up your ear and stop it leaking pus. Your doctor might prescribe a quinolone called ciprofloxacin (brand name Ciproxin). Antibiotics kill the bacteria that causse infectiion. But we don't know how well antibiotics work in the long term.

We found a summary of the research (called a systematic review) that included 14 studies.3 But the studies were not very good quality. The summary showed that:

Quinolone antibiotic ear drops are better at drying your ear than antiseptic ear drops
Quinolone antibiotic ear drops work better than taking antibiotic tablets.
You'll probably have your ear cleaned out before you start treatment with ear drops. This is to be certain that the ear drops get through to the infected part of your ear.

You might find you get some side effects from the ear drops. These are usually mild and go away when you stop taking the drops. The studies found that if you take antibiotic ear drops, you might get:

      Itching in your ear
      Stinging in your ear
      Yeast infections like thrush.
There is some evidence that other types of antibiotic ear drops might damage your ear, although it's not certain.4 5 6 But doctors usually use quinolone ear drops to be on the safe side.

Quinolone ear drops can dry out your ear infectionn in the short term. But we don't know whether treatment with antibiotic ear drops helps in the long term. There's not enough research to show whether using antibiotic ear drops willl make yoour infecttion go away for good, stop you getting complications, heal the hole in your eardrum or improve your hearing.

Also, the studies all looked at adults, so we don't know how well these ear drops work for children.

Antibiotic ear drops plus steroid ear drops

Using antibiotic ear drops together with steroid ear drops can dry up your ear discharge.

It is important to remember that the steroids used to treat ear infections are not the anabolic steroids used by athletes and bodybuilders. The steroids in ear drops are similar to chemicals produced naturally by our bodies to deal with inflammation.

One example of combined drops is the antibiotic gentamicin with the steroid hydrocortisone (a brand name is Gentisone).

We don't know if this treatment works better than antibiotic ear drops alone. We found two studies that looked at adults who were treated with both antibiotic ear drops and steroid ear drops for four to six weeks.7 8

The first study found that half of the people who had antibiotic ear drops and steroid ear drops got better while about a quarter of the people who took a dummy treatment (a placebo) got better.7
The second study showed that antibiotic ear drops and steroid ear drops worked better than steroid ear drops on their own.7 8
But the studies were quite small. Also, they all looked at adults, so there's no evidence about how well this treatment works for children.

We don't know if this treatment has side effects. The studies didn't look at whether it could be harmful.

      Antiseptic ear drops

Antiseptic ear drops don't work as well as other treatments to dry up a discharging ear. So they're not used much any more.

There are several types of antiseptic treatment. These include aluminium acetate, borax, hydrogen peroxide and iodine powder.

We found one summary of the research (a systematic review). It shows that antiseptic drops don't work as well as quinolone ear drops (a type of antibiotic ear drop).3

Studies show that antiseptic eardrops can make you feel dizzy and give you earache. But there's no evidence that they can damage your hearing.

      Antibiotic tablets or injections

Taking antibiotic tablets or having an antibiotic injection doesn't work as well as using quinolone (a type of antibiotic) ear drops.

We found a summary of the research (known as a systematic review).3 It included nine studies that were mostly poor-quality. The summary found that:

Taking antibiotic tablets or having an injection doesn't work as well as using quinolone antibiotic ear drops
Taking antibiotic tablets as well as antibiotic ear drops is unlikely to help clear up your ear infectionn.
You can get mild side effects from taking antibiotics. These include:9

      Stomach upset
      Allergic reactions
      Yeast infections (like thrush).
There's not much evidence to show whether antibiotic tablets, antibiotics that come as a liquid or antibiotic injections work in children. But we found one small study (a randomised controlled trial).10 It showedd that chiildren whoo had the injectionn were lesss likely to have aa dischargge from thheir ears six monthhs after tthe infecttion. But the study was too small to say for certain.

You can have an operation to repair the hole (perforation) in your eardrum. This may improve your hearing. But we don't know how well surgery works for children in the long term.

The operation involves covering the hole in your eardrum with a patch of tissue. The operation is called a myringoplasty or a tympanoplasty.

When you have this operation you'll usually have a general anaesthetic, so you'll be asleep during the operation. An ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist doctor puts a small patch of tissue onto your eardrum to cover the hole.11

You can usually leave hospital the same day as the operation. You should avoid getting water in your ear for a few weeks afterwards.11

We didn't find any good-quality studies (randomised controlled trials) that compare people having surgery with people not having surgery.

But there is quite a lot of evidence about what happens to people who do have surgery. Studies show there is a good chance that it will seal up the hole in your eardrum and maybe improve your hearing. The evidence shows that:

The hole in the eardrum is sealed up for more than 9 in 10 people who have the operation12
Between half and three-quarters of people who have the operation find that their hearing improves afterwards.13 14
But we don't know if a repaired eardrum is likely to last in young children. Young children are more at risk of getting another ear infectionn. This might dislodge the patch, so the eardrum would become perforated again.

One study found that 3 in 5 children who had surgery didn't get another hole in the eardrums, and had normal hearing, more than six years after the operation.15

Surgery is more likely to work if your surgeon is skilled in this kind of operation. So it's important to ask if he or she has done this operation a lot.16 17 Surgery is also likely to work better if your eardrum isn't very badly damaged to start with.

does anyone know any home remedies for a dog who has a yeast infection in their ears?
our female english mastiff has an ear infection, and we want to know if there are home remedies or herbs we can use to clear it up, not something expensive we have to get through a vet or some website, something we can buy at a store and use at home.

    • ANSWER:
since it is a yeast infection..don't laugh, it really works..monistat or any other feminine yeast product will work on your dogs ears! it has essentially the same basic ingredients as the mometomax that your vet will prescribe.

no treatment will work however if you don't take precautionary steps to preventing another infection. first, clean the ear well with an ear solution (from pet store) and cotton balls. apply some of the monistat into the ear canal and massage the ear thoroughly (you want the medicine deep into the ear). clean and apply med once daily until a significant imporvement is seen, then move to once every other day, and ween off like that.. yest is caused by moist dark places, so do everything within your power to keep your pup's ears dey.

good luck hope this helps :)

Does anyone know what I can do to keep our dog from having repeat ear infections?
Our dog is a 13 yr old mixed breed. Over the past year we have spent over a 00 on vet bills for repeat ear infections. They give her meds and it goes away. It always comes back. We cannot afford to keep doing this. We have to put off a utility bill to take her to the vet this week. Not to mention that she is miserable. Are there any home remedies or over the counter people meds that we can try?

    • ANSWER:
My two year old pup has major ear issues as well. We use a VET cleaner called Oticleanse, its a little bottle you squirt some of the cleaner in and then wipe it clean. You also may want to change the dogs diet, sometimes the food can cause an allergic reaction and that could be why it is so red and smelly. If your dog swims, or gets some frequent baths, make sure her ears are well dried out, that can cause more mites and bacteria to build up. If she seems to be in pain, we give our dog a SMALL dosage of baby motrin, that normally takes the edge off, and might help with the redness. Hope your pooch is feeling better soon!

What are good remedies for ear irritation when pregnant?
My wife has an ear infection or an ear irritation but she's also pregnant, can someone help and give me some home remedies or something you used to make it better?

    • ANSWER:
You have to be very very careful for what you used for your wife's ear.
I suggest you to ask her to do Bramari Pranayam.
This is one of the major pranayam (breathing exercise) of Yog.
There is nothing better than this.
Make sure when she do this exercise, she should feel vibration on the tip of thumbs. The more vibration, more effects.
      7-15 rounds and 2-3 times a day.
      I am sure it'll help.

How do you treat a dog's itchy ears at home?
I think my dog has an ear infection or ear mites. Do you know of a good home remedy to treat the symptoms?

I have already made and used a solution of 1/3 water 1/3 vinegar and 1/3 alcohol...

    Any suggestions will help. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Ear mites MAY be treatable with the use of Revolution from your vet. This is a prescription medication, so it will require that your dog has been seen within a year, and has had a heartworm/lyme test within that time.
Yeast or Bacteria will require a topical antibiotic such as Mometamax, again, from your vet. You can't get rid of bacteria without an antibacterial. Products like Mometamax contain antibiotics designed to kill the bacteria that is commonly found in the ears.

Yeast/Bacteria debris tends to be moist, while ear mites tend to have dry, crusty debris.

The problem with oils (sorry) is that mites and yeast especially do very will in oil. While it may help with the inflammation, I've seen many, many yeast infections flourish with the use of oils and over-the-counter ear treatments.

No matter what you choose to do, do not use Q-tips. You should never put anything larger than an elbow in any ear, as you risk permentantly damaging the ear. At the very least, pick up a pH-balancing ear cleaner, apply it to the ear, and mush it around to break up the debris, then use a chunk of cotton to wipe it out.

Allergies often cause some sort of discharge as well, and itchiness. Again, only a vet could tell you what exactly is going on in the ears.

How do I know if I have 'swimmers ear' or 'middle ear' infection?
I woke up today with a very sore ear. It seems plugged up and when i try and yawn or even open my mouth it really hurts. My boyfriend said that he can see discharge coming out and when i touch my ear in any which way it hurts? I can't get to the doctor's today because I have no one to babysit so I am looking for the right home remedy to use but im just not sure what type of ear infection I have? Please help!

    • ANSWER:
Ear aches with the kind of local tenderness you are suffering with invariably result from infection of the skin of the external ear canal, the tunnel that leads from the outside world to your eardrum. Doctors call this acute otitis externa but it is better known to non-MDs as "swimmer's ear". It's a misnomer since swimming isn't the only way to get it... any source of trapped moisture will encourage bacterial overgrowth..including the pus leaking through an eardrum perforated from a middle ear infection (otitis media).

If you live in a hot place where swimming is still in season, and if you have NO reason to suspect you have a hole in your eardrum (a bad dive, blood-tinging of the discharget, a bad cold preceding the ear symtoms) then your best 'home remedy' (and an effective one!) is plain white vinegar. Mix it 1:1 dilution with tap water and put 3-4 drops into the ear and run it out 3 times a day for 5 days.

The drops may burn at first, but if the burning is severe or radiates into your throat then you must stop the vinegar and see a doctor as the eardrum may be perforated.

Otitis externa is caused by trapped moisture (often excessive wax is the trapper)
so keep all other liquids away from your ear until you can get it checked by a doctor.

I know it sounds complicated but I know how much otitis externa hurts... if it were me I'd use the 1/2 strength vinegar drops... the weak acid kills the bacteria
that attack the canal "pseudomonas aerugenosa". These bad boys may pain the outside of a swimmer's ear... but only diabetics are at real risk. But whenever they actually infect our insides they can be quite dangerous.

How can I ease ear pain at home?
I don't think I have an ear infection and definitely not swimmer's ear, maybe just irritation in the ear canal from the cold weather and rain that we had today. It's in both ears, the right worse than the left. I don't have a heating pad, put I put a warm wash cloth over it and it seemed to help momentarily, but the pain came right back. Are there any home remedies i can use to treat it now until i can make a doctors appointment?

    • ANSWER:
first off i would advise against any ear wax candles or peroxide, based on audiologist's recommendations...i've had a lifetime of experience with ear infections and surgeries and when i'm in pain i go for the hot washcloth....dampen it with water then stick it in the microwave for 30-45 seconds and it should stay warmer longer. and if it is an earwax build-up then that should loosen it up. Hope you are feeling better soon, i know how awful it can be :(
