Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can i apply vicks vaporub to 2 months old baby?
My baby is quite chesty and i find him sleep well after applying the vicks vaporub, is it alright thati apply it at his back and at his chest? Read online that its not good to apply vicks, if thats the case, how to clear the chestyness in my baby? He have a lot of phlegm down his throat which is hard to clear off !!

    • ANSWER:
I did use it, but not on them directly but nearby. I would put a little on their clothes or a washcloth. Never directly on their skin. There is a baby Vics. I just saw it at the pharmacy yesterday, it was cherry scented. Neat. Saline drops will help a stuffy nose, too. If you are using a warm air humidifier, remember to keep it well clear of baby and buy the liquid menthol that is used in the dispenser. I forget the name of the product, sorry, but you can ask the pharmacist. I hope this helps your stuffy little one.

  2. QUESTION:
Cough and cold at 5 weeks pregnant; can it harm the baby?
I am 5 week, 4 days pregnant. Couple of days, I started out with a sore throat and then currently having a cough and really bad cold. I don't have fever though. I am not taking any medication except salt water gargle and applying vicks vaporub .

I was wondering if it would harm my baby in anyway. I have appetitie and able to eat normally.

    • ANSWER:
Generally your antibodies will protect the baby form any infection you get. Most infections that can pass to the baby are usually serious and you'd be at the dr's in a heartbeat. Theres a barier between you and the baby that help keep from passing things thru. Tylonal is about all you can take while you're pregnant. it's safe to take as directed.

  3. QUESTION:
How do you get vaseline / petroleum jelly out of a bowl?
I have a cold so I put hot water and vicks vaporub in a bowl. However no matter how many times I've washed and rinsed the bowl, it's still extremely greasy from the vicks. How do I get it out??

    • ANSWER:
Liquid dishwashing soap such as Dawn is supposed to have grease remover in it . . . try applying this with a scrubbie, let it sit a while before rinsing. . . If this doesn't work, you can try Goo-gone (adhesive & grease removers) But if you end up using this, make sure to wash very well with regular dish soap before using the bowl for food . . . There is also a Goo Gone Household, might be milder, but I have never tried it.

  4. QUESTION:
In many states pharmacists can sell schedule 5 drugs if they deem it necessary. Is Texas one of these states?
I am curious because I am very sick, but my allergy medicine won't cut it. I have flu-like symptoms but no fever. I'm taking Psuedoephedrine, Mucinex, cough drops and Vicks Vaporub. I'm hoping that I can get some better cough medicine, but I cannot afford to go to the doctor. Does anyone know if this applies in Texas? Thanks so much.

    • ANSWER:
I live in a state which allows it, but my pharmacy does not participate in it except for ephedrine and sudafed sales. You should call up your local pharmacies and ask them.

  5. QUESTION:
My friend brought me a combination of belladonna and arnica. What are its uses?
It comes in a small jar and is the consistency of Vicks Vaporub. My friend said it would be good to rub into my skin over arthritic joints to dull the pain. Is she correct? What other uses would it have? What side effects could it have? (P.S. She got it in a Mexican homeopathic market.) Thanks for your help.

    • ANSWER:
Basically, these herbs will reduce some of the pain due to inflammation. Comfrey cream will have a similar effect as it has a similar action to arnica.

Capsaicin cream is more often recommended for arthritis relief. It is made from an ingredient in chillis.

      Arnica:
The tincture is used for external application to sprains, bruises, and wounds, and as a paint for chilblains when the skin is unbroken. Repeated applications may produce severe inflammation. (But this is different when the tincture has been mixed into a lotion.)

      Belladonna:
Locally applied, it lessens irritability and pain, and is used as a lotion, plaster or liniment in cases of neuralgia, gout, rheumatism and sciatica.

If you are concerned about where your friend bought the lotion, you can buy comfrey or arnica cream from a lot of health food stores.

I use comfrey cream daily for muscular and tendon pain in my knee and ankle.

Dave, a lotion (or linament) is not a homeopathic preparation, and she isn't going to take it internally.

EDIT - OMG, Gary, even you couldn't be bothered doing a bit of relevant research before writing it off. AGAIN, it's a lotion, not for internal use. And to quote someone you align yourselves with, "Identity of a chemical isn't what makes it harmful, its the dose". (here's your reference ...

And here are just a few Pub Med studies on the effectiveness (not dangers) of arnica:

  6. QUESTION:
How do vicks vaporub work when you rub it on your chest?
i read on the label that one way of applying it is to rub the ointment on your chest (i'm talking about Vick's that comes in a bottle, not the lipstick tube type)... i get how it can unblock your nose when you inhale the vapor... but if you rub it on your chest and you are fully clothed, how do you unblock your nose when you have a cold?

    • ANSWER:
Even when you're clothed, the vapor gets from your chest to your nose. If you put it directly on your nose or anywhere on your face it will burn, but the skin on the chest is thicker.

  7. QUESTION:
How do you get rid of zits at home?
without popping them or using toothpaste. i hear vicks vaporub works...does it?

    • ANSWER:
Toothpaste does not work. Neither does Vick's. Wash your face twice a day and I would recommand Alba cleanser and then pat dry your face and use the toner. Apply to the spots where it is most needed. Then finish off with the Alba moistizer. It isn't oily so it wouldn't spred the zits or anything. Hope it helps.

  8. QUESTION:
Can putting Vicks Vaporub around the outside of the nose harm my lungs?
I applied it twice on the outside of my nose because it as stuffy. Then on Wikipedia I read that it could harm your lungs!! What will happen??

    • ANSWER:
      A
      pulmonologist alerted the
possibility that one of the ingredients in
      Vicks

      PETROLATUM

could get into the lungs and cause chronic inflammation.

  9. QUESTION:
Can Vicks be applied to infants who are below 3 months?
Can Vicks be applied to infants who are below 3 months?

    • ANSWER:
I have heard that you can apply vicks vaporub to the soles of a baby's feet and cover with socks. If they have a cold or cough, it should "dry" it up.
This may sound strange but if you apply garlic to the soles of your feet and cover with socks, within 20 minutes you will be able to "taste" the garlic in your face. I don't know if it is a good idea for a 3 month old to have vicks applied to their chest.

  10. QUESTION:
Is it unsafe to open an advil liquigel and put liquid in your mouth?
As ridiculous as it may sound, I am extremely prone to canker sores and I have an awful one on my tongue, and the gelatin inside the liquigels, when applied directly to the sore, is the only thing that helps. I'm aware that its not recommended, but will it like burn my gum tissue or anything serious?

    • ANSWER:
Wow, you must be hurting to try such a thing! Aww. Well, consider the source. Are you stressed? Have you been biting the insides of your cheeks or lips? Do you get enough sleep every night? Are you immunosuppressed? The tongue bumps (if you have them) usually mean you're fighting a virus. And a virus is stressful to the body. And stress causes canker sores! Yay, I'm Dr. House. Only I have it backwards. :-/

Well don't worry. Gently treat them with any of the following suggestions, and you'll be feeling better within a week.

Keeping in mind that stress brings canker sores, you might want to try a wonderful homeopathic stress remedy called Hylands Calms Forte. Look into it. i love the stuff! i take 1 tablet for nervous anxiety, or 3 to get to sleep when you're restless.

Excellent over-the-counter tool to try: Kanka. i prefer the one with a brush applicator. It can be found in most drug stores or walmart. i think in time one can build up a tolerance for it, though. the following home remedies work even more effectively.

I've found some help in a book from the 80s/90s that i swear by. It is called The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies, edited by William Gottlieb...... you don't have to try them all to get better. here ya go:

**Alert: stubborn sores should be checked out. if it lasts longer than 2 wks, you may need more serious medication.**

      1. products combining glycerine and peroxide are helpful. peroxide releases oxygen and cleans up the bacteria. the glycerine puts on a coating and helps protect the sore. (Gly-Oxide brand name)

      2. apply a wet black tea bag to the ulcer. black tea contains tannin, an astringent that can relieve pain.

      3. dilute 1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide in a glass of water and swish it around in your mouth to disinfect the sore and speed healing. (this has worked wonders for me!!)

      4. Alum, from the spice rack, is the active ingredient in a styptic pencil. it's an antiseptic and pain reliever, but it won't completely get rid of your sore.

      5. swish mylanta or milk of magnesia around your mouth and allow it to protectively coat the sore.

      6. goldenseal root. make a strong tea of it and use it as a mouthwash.

      7. AVOID irritation: coffee, spices, citrus fruit, nuts high in the amino acid arginine (esp. walnuts), chocolate, and strawberries. brush your teeth carefully.

      8. eat 4 tbsp of unflavored yogurt a day to send in helpful bacteria to fight off the bad bacteria. (note: maybe just take some acidophilus?)

      9. here's a weird one: take a little earwax from your ear and apply it to the canker sore. it's said to be a sure cure. it may have some antiseptic value, and it may protect the sore.

      10. squeeze vitamin E oil from a capsule onto the sore. repeat several times a day to keep the tissue well-oiled. and at the first tingle of a canker sore, take 500 mg of vit C with bioflavinoids 3 times a day for the next 3 days. (This has helped me!!)

      11. you can't underestimate the power of a little dab of Vicks VapoRub. it numbs pain and speeds healing. just be careful because it isn't meant to be edible. I really do mean just use a LITTLE TINY BIT, okay? Don't swallow it and make yourself sick!

I heard it's toxic to apply it inside the nostrils so rubbed it on my forehead, cheekbones (because of sinuses) and just above my lip - It was the best remedy for nasa inflammation I've ever had.

    But am I poisoning myself?

    • ANSWER:
No you're fine. I do that when I'm all stuffed up--hell, I've put a liiiiitle inside my nostrils too. But I wouldn't recommend that cause it burns!

But under your nose is just fine!

  14. QUESTION:
What the amount of water/listerine or vinegar to soak your feet to treat toenail fungus?
I dont want to pour too much or too little. The size of the container can fit both your foot. The length is about 5 inches. The width is 1 foot.
Should i filled the container with like 1/4 of listerine or vinegar and like 3/4 water? Just give me any estimation. Doesn't have to be in exact number.

    • ANSWER:
itz - To kill toenail fungus is a long and tough task. The fungus usually thickens the nail and then grows UNDER the nail. IF you do a Yahoo or Google computer search for - treatment of nail fungus - you will get lots of references and info, especially from the Mayo Clinic. Often, ordinary Vicks Vaporub is applied twice a day to the surface and nail edges. There is some very expensive topical clear medicine applied like nail polish. A podiatrist could plane off some of the nail thickness. Finally oral medicine, which sometimes has a bad effect on your liver, has been used. Treatment can take months and requires persistence, but you can cure it.

  17. QUESTION:
What is causing my 4 year old boy to cough continiously at night?
I have a 4 years old boy, what is happening is that every night around 3:00 AM, he coughs continiousily for an hour and after that he starts whizzing

    • ANSWER:
I think it could be bronchitis which is when the mucous membrane of the bronchial tubes become inflamed, hence the wheezing. Bronchitis can be acute or chronic. The cough may be dry or 'phlegmy'. If a significant amount of phlegm is produced, it could be indicative of pneumonia.

I used to experience non-stop coughing, like your son, every night when I was a young child, that lasted for a couple of years. It's more prevalent at night since it's cooler and perhaps windier. I remember having fevers with chills, sore muscles, blocked nose and a sore throat from constant, forceful coughing.

As most bronchitis cases stem from viral infections, antibiotics will probably not treat it. However, it's best to seek professional advice. My parents and grandparents used several remedies to help relieve my discomfort; such as, applying a damp and hot face towel all over my back and chest to open up my airways before applying Vicks vaporub, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, use of a vaporizer, and taking over-the-counter cough medicine (Nyal worked best for me).

  18. QUESTION:
What are some good home-made remedies for Poison Ivy?
I was biking through a ravine yesturday and somehow I got a rash on my hands that is most likely poison ivy. Anyone know some home-made remedies to get rid of it or at least make it stop itching? I have calamine lotion on right now, haha. :) Thanks to everyone!

    • ANSWER:
Antihistamines (such as benadryl) can help to control itching. Aveeno Oatmeal in lotion, salve or bath forms is also helpful for relieving the itch.

I used vicks vaporub when I had poison ivy a few years back and it really helped with the itching and discomfort.

You can apply ice to the area, provided its not weeping or blistered yet, for a minute for some relief.

I've heard that some people have had success drawing out the oil with dawn dish detergent and a home made concoction of baking soda and cool coffee. They used half a cup of baking soda and cool coffee to make a thick paste and then applied the paste liberally to the affected area and allowed to dry. The last one sounds a bit wonky, but my grandma swears it works! haha And it makes sense as the baking soda would help not only draw out the oil, but also to dry out the blisters after the oil has been drawn out. I just googled this particular remedy and apparently it has helped for other people as well.

      Good luck!

  19. QUESTION:
What can I do to ease the pain from the canker sore I have in the back of my throat?
I went to the doctor thinking I had strep, the test came back negative but she gave me some antibiotics in case the send away test came back positive. Anyway, it felt like a canker sore so I looked at it with a flashlight and lo and behold, canker sore. It's incredibly painful. Any tips on how to relieve the pain? Maybe something to gargle?

  21. QUESTION:
How does one treat fungal infections of the nails?
My friend has a fungal infection on one of his toenails, and he asked me how (if) they can be treated. Unfortunately I do not know (I never had these myself). Typical symptoms include but are not limited to discoloration and thickening of those nails which are infected. Is it possible to get the nails back to normal? If so, then how?

    • ANSWER:
Oral prescription medications include Lamisil (terbinafine), Sporanox (itraconazole), and Diflucan (fluconazole). Lamisil appears to be the most effective treatment for toenail fungus in this group. While these treatment regimens have the advantage of being relatively easy, they do have rare severe side effects, and they are quite expensive if you have to pay for them out of pocket. People taking these fungus toenail treatments should be monitored for toxicity due to the drugs. There is one topical prescription drug available: Penlac (ciclopirox) nail lacquer is painted directly onto the affected nails, but can only be used when the infection is not advanced.

OTC antifungal ointments, creams and lotions may work quite well for fungal skin infections, but they are not recommended for nails simply because they are not an effective treatment for toenail fungus. They are applied to the nail topically, and they don't penetrate the thick nail to kill the fungus, which is protected in the nail bed below the nail. If you want to try one of these medications, it might be a good idea to combine it with one of the other types of remedy to increase the probability of success.

There are many natural healing remedies available today to consumers; some of them incorporate an oral product. Some of these products may be effective treatment for toenail fungus. Perhaps the most promising ingredient in natural remedies is the essential oil, Tea tree oil, which is produced in Australia. Studies of this extract are encouraging, and a number of natural remedies contain it, blended with other herbal ingredients. Tea tree oil is even available in pure form, however there is some risk of skin sensitivity so this may not be best way to use it. Other natural remedies may be worthwhile fungus toenail treatments, but scientific evidence for or against them is generally lacking, simply because the research has not been done.

Finally, there are a lot of traditional, or simply inventive, home fungus toenail treatments. They include soaking the feet in various solutions, or applying substances that are thought to be antifungal. The substances employed include chlorine bleach, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, dark beer combined with a lactobacillus, Vicks VapoRub, Listerine mouthwash, DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), and others. Some people swear by a drink of apple cider vinegar, twice daily, to cure and prevent fungal toenail infections. Again, the primary focus for an effective treatment for toenail fungus rests with getting the treatment beyond the nail to the fungus. Good luck!

I am having trouble clipping my mom's toenails and she will not see a doctor. I think she has a fungus because her toenails are thick and rigidy and discolored. I have tried over-the-counter remedies but they have not helped yet. She is 76 and will not see a physician for this problem. Does anyone have a home remedy that works?

    • ANSWER:
Swansonvitamins.com has a product called Hair, Skin, & Nails. Also, try a couple of drops of tea tree oil on the toenails after she has bathed or showered each day, or apply VIck's Vaporub. Both of these will kill the fungus over time, but the treatments must be continued til recovery is complete.

  25. QUESTION:
How can I help my hey fever symptoms?
My symptoms have been really bad recently, and I've been taking a tablet everyday which in previous years, would have done the trick. But I still wake up everyday with my eyes stuck together, a blocked nose, aching head and ears and I can't stop sneezing!

Is there anything else I could try?

    • ANSWER:
For chronic sinusitis, please refer to this previous article about how to address sinusitis caused by mold and fungi exposure. The following natural treatments can help you get over an acute sinus infection without the use of antibiotics and unnecessary OTC drugs, by keeping your cilia healthy and functioning, thereby preventing excess mucus build-up in your sinuses.

Drink hot liquids, such as tea or hot chicken soup. It will help moisturize your mucous membranes, speeding up the movement of your cilia and thus washing mucus out of your sinuses more quickly.

Apply warm compresses to your face, three times a day for five minutes. A small towel soaked in warm water, placed over your face below and between the eyes, will help increase the circulation in your sinuses, which will also help speed up the movement of your cilia.

Irrigate your sinuses. In a 2007 study from University of Michigan Health System researchersvi, saline irrigation was found to decrease nasal congestion more effectively than saline sprays. It appears to work by thinning mucus, decreasing swelling in your nasal passages and removing debris, bacteria, allergens and inflammatory substances from your nose, hence decreasing swelling that makes it hard to breathe. (If you've never done this before, see these Nasal Irrigation Guidelinesvii by the University of Michigan.)

To make your own preservative-free saline solution, just add one teaspoon of himalayan or sea salt to one pint of distilled water. Make sure you use a saline solution that does not contain benzalkonium, a preservative that can impair your nasal function and might sting and burn.

Clear your sinuses with an aromatherapy steam bath. To help open up congested nasal passages and sinuses, put a couple of drops of eucalyptus or menthol aromatherapy oil into a bowl of hot water, then breathe the vapors. In lieu of aromatherapy oil, dabbing some Vick's VapoRub on your skin underneath your nose can also be effective.

Unclog your sinuses with the right foods. Horseradish, grated on top of a sandwich, or some Japanese wasabi mustard can also help open up congested sinuses.
      Elevate your head when sleeping.

Dust your bedroom. Dust and dust mites can wreak havoc on your mucous membranes, especially when you're asleep and your cilia are at rest. Using a HEPA filter air purifier is also beneficial in keeping your air as free from allergens as possible.

  28. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of a canker sore fast?
I get canker sores ALL THE TIME... And it's so freaking annoying. I was wondering how the heck I can get rid of them? I currently have one on the right side of my tongue. I usually get them on my tongue.

    • ANSWER:
Don't worry.

What's the best way to treat a really, really, painful canker sore?
    Self explanatory.
I've been getting canker sores off and on my whole life.
    They're from the devil himself.

    • ANSWER:
Ohh, I hate those awful things!! Fortunately I haven't had one in a while, ever since I studied up and braced myself for a FIGHT against them! Here's where I always start:

Consider the source. :-/

  31. QUESTION:
How do I get rid of a cough?
I have a dry cough with no phlegm. When I tilt my head back a little is the only time I cough. The doctors say it isn't a big deal but it is very annoying having to wake up in the middle of the night and wake wake my family wake up to me coughing. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
To relieve a cough, try cough drops and syrups. Look for a product that contains cough-suppressing antitussives such as dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine, or noscapine, says Casdorph. These include Vicks Cough Silencers cough drops and Robitussin cough syrup.
Lozenges can also combat coughs. Many of them contain topical anesthetics that slightly numb your sore throat, which relieves your need to cough. Sucrets, Cepacol, Cepastat or Spec-T sore throat decongestant lozenges are among them.

Menthol or camphor rubs have a soothing, cooling effect and may relieve congestion and help you breathe more easily, especially at bedtime. Apply Vics VapoRub or a similar product to your bare chest, cover up, and get a good night's sleep.

what does cna training program consist of?
I am trying to get into this program called evergreen. I did some browsing on the internet and people
say it's a dirty job. Does this include changing the older people? Is it stressfull? Tell me a little bit
    about this job and training.

    • ANSWER:
Yeah, you'll be training in a nursing home, changing diapers, taking people to the toilet, washing people... It is indeed a dirty job. I had to do that, though my goal was to work with disabled children, not adults. Unfortunately, you don't have many options. But, I got through it, and it's the last thing I thought I'd ever do...
You can assume that the vast majority of CNA work involves poop. If you cannot deal with poop from adults or children, you might want to keep looking. If you do go for it, get some Vicks Vaporub to apply to your nostrils, it helps to block a lot of the odor.

What are good things to soak your feet in for dry feet?
I heard luke warm coffee was one becuase it has tanic acid... dunno all the stuff . Looking for something simple.

    • ANSWER:
To soften super-dry areas, soak your feet in original Listerine AntisepticMouthwash () (yes, Listerine!) once or twice a week. Mix one part Listerine with two parts warm water in a basin and soak your feet for 15 to 20 minutes, then apply a moisturizer like Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Foot Creme (.59), which contains hydrating urea. In addition to skin-sloughing benzoic acid, Listerine contains ethanol, which kills bacteria, fungi, and germs that can lead to athlete’s foot.

Coating feet in a cream like Burt’s Bees Thoroughly Therapeutic Honey & Bilberry Foot Creme (), which is loaded with moisture-replenishing honey and jojoba oil, and wearing socks to bed is an excellent way to lock in moisture for softer feet. If you can’t stand to sleep in socks, place a humidifier at the foot of your bed to keep feet hydrated. Treat thick, dry patches on your feet by massaging them with Vicks VapoRub topical ointment () in the p.m. to battle bacteria while you sleep.

  36. QUESTION:
How do I make sure I don't get the white stuff from chapstick on my lips?
Most of the time when I wear chapstick I get that white stuff on my lips. So I get really paranoid when I where it. Only now it is winter and my lips are dry so I really don't want to not wear it. What can I do so that I don't get it on my lips.

    • ANSWER:
I know what your problem is!! This has happened to me, and it SUCKED!!!! You have a vitamin imbalance, and it makes your lips all chunky and flaky. But it's not permanent or anything. Be careful if you exfoliate your lips because the skin is thin and you could hurt yourself.

Take a B-complex 3 or 4 times a day until your normal lips come back. As you might know, it will make you pee a lot and it will be a very bright color.

My lips feel like they are rotting off my face about twice a year and then I know I need MORE VITAMIN B!!!!

After your lips come back to normal, stop taking so much B. Just take your regular vitamins.

Vicks VapoRub is also a wonderful healy sauce. apply a thin layer and leave it on for a while. so very healy.

i know all this because i have a lip and this one time it hurt. x_x

My 8 month old Daughter has a chesty cough, any tips to relieve her symptoms?
The doctor has recommended cough mixture, my Mother olbas oil and in the bathroom with the door closed and the shower on to steam her chest. Any other tips?

    Many thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
Vick's BabyRub - I raised all 3 of my kids with this. I smear it on their chest and neck to help with congestion. The menthol and eucalyptusThe Vicks VapoRub medicated vapors begin to work immediately to relieve your cough and open air passenges. VapoRub is applied externally, so it doesn't interact with other medication the way pills can.

This is from the Vick's website:
      http://www.vicks.com/products/baby_rub.shtml
Vicks BabyRub comforts a fussy baby with soothing aloe vera and fragrances of eucalyptus, rosemary, and lavender. Now, you and your baby can rest easy with the soothing comfort of Vicks BabyRub.
Can be used as needed on babies 3 months and older. Gently massage on the chest, neck, and back to help soothe and comfort.
Use only as intended. For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not use directly on face or on broken or damaged skin. Do not use in the mouth or in the nostrils. Do not heat in water, a vaporizer, a microwave oven, or on the stove.

      A vaporizer works great too.

  39. QUESTION:
Whats the difference between a cold sore and a canker sore?
    And are they related?

    • ANSWER:
A canker sore is an ulcer, most often on the inside of the mouth. It's usually red around the edges and yellowish-white in the center. It is not a blister. It can be very painful. They come about due to a variety of causes; some of these being stress, friction, or injury.

I'm not as knowledgeable about cold sores, but I do believe they show up on the outside of the mouth and are more scabby in appearance. They are usually preceded by a tingling sensation.

  40. QUESTION:
How do I make my boyfriend stop picking my nose?
HE DOES THIS ALL THE TIME. HE JUST STICKS HIS FINGER IN MY NOSE AND JUST STARTS PICKING. WTF.

    • ANSWER:
is this for real??? you can slap him everytime he does that, or you can do the same on him (pick his nose too), if he feels annoyed, tell him: that's how I feel when you pick my nose, so stop it! Or you can collect boogers on your nose so he will be disgused to pick them. Or you can wear big nose ring so his finger will be too big to pick your nose. Or you can apply vicks vaporub on your nose so it'll burn his finger when he pick your nose. That'll teach him something.Find which way works for you. Good luck.

  41. QUESTION:
How did I get chest congestion?
I recently got a puppy and she sleeps with me at night (my cat always slept with me and I never got this) is my chest congestion caused from my puppy or could it just be all the pollen in the air? And what are some simple ways to get rid of it? Your help is appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
      Colds
The common cold can cause you to develop copious amounts of mucus, which may cause congestion in your chest and nose that lasts for several weeks.

      Sinusitis
Sinusitis is an inflammation of your sinuses and may be acute or chronic; mucus that develops from sinusitis may cause chest and nasal congestion.
      Croup
Croup is a cause of chest congestion that may affect your children, and can cause other symptoms including a barking cough and extreme difficulty with breathing.

      Bronchitis
Bronchitis is an inflammation of your bronchial tubes and causes you to produce large amounts of mucus that results in chest congestion, sinus pressure sore throat and trouble breathing.

      Pneumonia
Pneumonia can be caused by bacterial or viral infections and causes symptoms including chest and nasal congestion, fever, difficulty breathing and extreme fatigue.

      Tuberculosis
If you have an active infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, you may experience serious chest congestion, cough and difficulty breathing. www.cusabio.com il-6 elisa kit

      PCP
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is a fungal infection that commonly occurs in people with AIDS, and can cause serious chest congestion and heart failure.
Use an inhaler. Ask your doctor about inhalers or nebulizers with which you can administer your own breathing treatments.

2Treat congestion with Vicks VapoRub. Place this over-the-counter remedy on your chest before you go to sleep and it should open up some of the passageways.
3See your doctor to get prescription medication. If symptoms do not improve with methods, inquire with your doctor about an antibiotic shot, nasal spray, pills or prescription vitamin therapy to clear up stubborn or deep chest congestion.

      Home Remedies

1Use steam. A vaporizer, hot shower, or pan of boiling water will produce steam that helps soothe and clear your airways, lungs and throat.

If you use a pan of boiling water, take the pot off the element or burner, drape a towel over your head, and place your face over the hot water. Breathe in slowly and deeply. Be careful not to burn your face in the steam.
2Elevate your head. Use additional pillows or raise the head of your bed. Doing so will help clear the airways of drainage or mucus and increase air supply, keeping your phlegm and subsequent drainage clear and thin.
3Try a hot pack. Applying a hot pack or steaming hot cloth on your throat and chest will help soothe congestion and warm the airways externally.

4Avoid problem foods. Dairy products, salts and sugars all increase mucus production. Also avoid cold foods, which will close up airways.
5Increase your intake of fruits and veggies. Fruits such as pineapples and oranges, as well as veggies including cauliflower and asparagus have been shown to help in clearing chest congestion.

6Eat spicy foods. Foods such as chili, jalapenos and black pepper will also loosen mucus stuck in your respiratory tract.

7Stop smoking. If you can't or simply aren't interested in stopping permanently, at least stop while your chest is congested. Smoking can aggravate respiratory infections.
Herbal, Homeopathic And Other Natural Methods

1Drink herbal teas. These are widely known to help clear congestion. Choose from flavors including angelic root, cardamom, cayenne pepper and rosemary. The warm herbs provide an aromatherapy benefit, helping soothe your congestion while the warmth of the liquid will help loosen phlegm and mucus in your throat and chest.

Add lemon or honey to tea for an added soothing benefit.
2Take natural cough syrup. Natural cough syrups often contains a thing which is a cough suppressant as well as a natural expectorant.

3Take herbs for respiratory conditions. Burdock, mullein and white pine are all popular herbs for treating symptoms for respiratory conditions.

4Use vaporizers. Infusing aromatherapy oils such as eucalyptus or peppermint oil into a vaporizer or aroma lamps can be both soothing and refreshing to your chest.

5Use a natural rub. There are cold relief products made from fragrant herbs that help encourage deeper breathing, which will clear congestion.
6Take Kail. Kali anything and kail are believed to be excellent at treating phlegm coughs and sinus congestion. They do this by soothing irritated mucous membranes and loosening thick chest mucus.
7Add ginger to hot water. Boil water and then add two pieces of ginger to it. Let the water sit and then drink.

8Get reflexology. Talk to a massage therapist about reflexology to help clear congestion, such as holding back your toes while pressing on the ball of your foot with the thumb, a method thought to relieve congestion of the chest.
9Try a yoga class. Yoga teaches restorative poses such as the chest-opening pose or the reclining bound angle pose, both of which will help clear congestion.

Like the title says. I've had one for the past week and it is really big, painful, and swollen.
Are there anyways to make it heal faster or anything?
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
yup, that's a canker sore all right. ouch!! not to worry.......

keep in mind that stress brings canker sores! very easily, i might add! just something to consider. you might want to try a wonderful homeopathic stress remedy called Hylands Calms Forte. Look into it. i love the stuff! i take 1 tablet for nervous anxiety, or 3 to get to sleep when you're restless.

Excellent tool to try: Kanka. i prefer the brush one. can be found in most drug stores or walmart.

okay, so i've found some help in a book from the 80s/90s that i swear by....... you don't have to try them all to get better. here ya go:

**Alert: stubborn sores should be checked out. if it lasts longer than 2 wks, you may need more serious medication.

      1. products combining glycerine and peroxide are helpful. peroxide releases oxygen and cleans up the bacteria. the glycerine puts on a coating and helps protect the sore.

      2. apply a wet black tea bag to the ulcer. black tea contains tannin, an astringent that can relieve pain.

      3. dilute 1 tbsp hydrogen peroxide in a glass of water and swish it around in your mouth to disinfect the sore and speed healing.

  44. QUESTION:
How do I get rid of two toned lips?
I have to constantly use lip balm on my bottom lip because every time my lips get chapped, the lower half of my bottom lip turns this weird, purplish color! But the problem is, when I use the lip balm, it leaves this sticky, white residue on my lips, and I always have to wipe it off, which cancels out the use of it!

Does anyone know how to temporarily, if not permanently, get rid of it?

    • ANSWER:
Take a B-complex 3 or 4 times a day until your normal lips come back. As you might know, it will make you pee a lot and it will be a very bright color.

My lips feel like they are rotting off my face about twice a year and then I know I need MORE VITAMIN B!!!!

After your lips come back to normal, stop taking so much B. Just take your regular vitamins.

Vicks VapoRub is also a wonderful healy sauce. apply a thin layer and leave it on for a while. so very healy.

i know all this because i have a lip and this one time it hurt. x_x
