Can Bumps Not Be Herpes

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can herpes spread to your stomach and lower abdomen?
I have had a few partners over the past year, and used a condom all but one time. Sex with that individual took place almost a year ago, about 9 months. Anyways I am now noticing i have bumps like herpes but nowhere around where most articles say... mine start above the penis and extend towards my belly button.

I have had no symptoms which i know pretty much means nothing but... again ive read nothing about bumps being on your stomach.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated... this is very scary.

    • ANSWER:
Yes. Herpes can spread or be passed to any part of your body.

  2. QUESTION:
how can you tell the difference between razor bumps and herpes?
pimples are only in areas I shave, small groups of pimples, dont really look like pimples, its been at least 5 days that ive had them.could they be natural pimples, from sweating, shaving or herpes.ive had unprotected sex with 2 girls before

    • ANSWER:
Herpes will start as bumps, then they burst open and turn into blistery, scab-like sores before healing. I'd get them checked out, because herpes can usually only be diagnosed during an outbreak. Whatever you do, don't touch them, because you can spread it to other areas of your body that way, such as your mouth, eyes, and nose.

      Good luck!

  3. QUESTION:
Is it normal to get little bumps on the inside of your lip?
Because not every bump is herpes or anything major right because iM a very clean person.

    • ANSWER:
you can get blood blisters and ulcers in your mouth, they are not necessarily due to STI's.

  4. QUESTION:
Is it possible to mistake a razor bump for herpes outbreak?
Also, is it possible to mistake razor burns, itch and irritation for symptoms of herpes?
Bare in mind that i mean also razor bumps as a result of shaving your facial hair more so than your genetal area.

    • ANSWER:
Yes people do that all the time on here. They get a bump down stairs and they start freaking out over it possibly being herpes.
They can have similar symptoms but herpes is usually more uncomfortable or pain full the razor bumps and it looks more like raised blisters or open sores then lumps or bumps. Genital herpes usually comes from having some kind of sexual activity like receiving oral sex or having intercourse with some one that has herpes. If you have never had oral sex or intercourse before you're not likely to have genital herpes.
If you have had sex before then you can always get it checked out and or tested for herpes by your doctor.

  5. QUESTION:
How much time take for the herpers bumps to be cured?
How much time take to the genital herpes bumps to be cured. I just mean about the bumps, i know the herpes will be never cured. I hear in internet it takes about 3 or 4 weeks to dessapear, its that true or it takes more or less time?
In average, how much time it take to cure?

    • ANSWER:
It takes about 2 weeks for the bumps to go away, if it is NOT your first outbreak.

The first few outbreaks can be much longer, depending on the state of your immune system. Your body simply hasn't adjusted to the virus yet.

If you are on medication such as Acyclovir, Zovirax, or Valtres.... the bumps should clear up within a few days of starting treatment.

  6. QUESTION:
How do you shave female pubic hair without getting bumps and nicks?
Whenever I shave my pubic hair, I trim it short, moisturize the area with Bio oil, and have a hot shower for about 10 minutes to soften the hairs. I then use a good razor and a lot of shaving cream. Yet no matter how carefully I shave I am usually bleeding afterwards and get ugly bumps that look like herpes. x.x The hair is very coarse, is this the problem? How can I get a smooth, clean shave with no bumps/nicks? HELP!

    • ANSWER:
"Stretch" the skin around the area and hold so it is firm and tight, then carefully shave WITH the hair growth, not against it; from top to bottom. You can also use conditioner rather than shaving cream to make the hair extra soft prior to shaving.

  7. QUESTION:
How long does it take for herpes bumps to appear after sex if someone is infected?
I had sex with a partner one night. A few days later he called me and said he had a red sore on his penis. He said he was tested and it was herpes. He was blaming me for giving it to him. I told him that i wasn't with anyone else for over a year and then they wore protection. I told him i didn't understand where it came from. I have no symptoms whatsoever of anything. What do i do?

    • ANSWER:
Herpes typically takes between 3-30 days to show symptoms in the body. If he has it you should get tested too, you could end up clearing your name with him if you don't have it.

  8. QUESTION:
Can a person get genital herpes from giving oral sex without intercourse to the infected partner?
I found painful itchy bumps in my vulva & labia few months afterwards. It took 2 weeks for them to turn into pus & burst. The itchiness remains. I'm still a virgin & have never had the penis near my genitals.
I read that It is possible for a person to contract genital herpes if the partner with oral herpes performs oral sex. But my question is can an uninfected person get genital herpes from performing oral sex on an infected partner?

    • ANSWER:
Like you, I caught genital herpes through receiving oral sex from a partner who had oral herpes. Since oral herpes is caused by the hsv-1 virus, the likelihood is that you have genital hsv-1.

So, you want to know if your partner/boyfriend will get genital herpes from giving you oral sex becasue you now have genital herpes? The answer to that is a definite NO. The virus can only be transferred from the area where it was caught (your genitals) to the area in contact with your genitals (ie his mouth). So theoretically he could catch oral herpes, on his mouth. The only way he could get genital herpes is by having genital-to-genital contact with you.

You probably have genital hsv-1. 60-95% of the population has oral hsv-1. Once they have it orally they can't catch it orally again, and are extremely unlikely to catch it genitally.

      This means that:

a)if this is the same man that gave you genital herpes through oral sex, he cannot catch it on his mouth from you at all, and is highly unlikely to catch genital herpes from you even if you have intercourse. My boyfriend has cold sores (oral herpes) and we have even accidentally had intercourse while I am having an outbreak, and he hasn't got it genitally. Once you have it in one location you are extremely unlikely to get it in another. Which means:

      b) if your partner is one of the 60-95%(depending on age - the older the more likely) of the population with cold sores (oral herpes) they cannot catch herpes on their mouths through giving you oral sex and aren't really going to get genital herpes through having intercourse with you.

      c) if your partner does not have oral herpes and has never had a cold sore then theoretically through giving you oral sex he could catch oral herpes on his mouth. But when hsv-1, a virus that usually causes oral herpes, is on the genitals as it probably is with you (caught through oral sex), it is much less infectious than it is, for example, on the mouth of someone who has it orally. Which means, your partner is about five times as likely to catch oral herpes through kissing someone else with cold sores than by giving you oral sex. If you ever came to have intercourse, even if you were having unprotected sex with him and he is not infected with hsv-1, he is again five times less liekly to catch genital herpes through intercourse with you than through receiving oral sex himself from someone with oral herpes.

If it helps, your genital herpes is infectious about 3-4% of the time and oral herpes about 18% of the time. Most of that will be when you have symptoms i.e. itching, sores, but sometimes you will be infecitous without knowing it. It is common sense to avoid any contact with your genitals when you have any knid of symptoms - for example I get soreness down the back of my leg which could be the virus activating - but that should be enough. DOn't worry about it too much. I have a completely normal relationship with my boyfriend, we have a normal sex life with oral sex and unpotected intercourse, and don't let it concern us at all.

  9. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:
i think u need to get the doctor to give u a stronger prescription, or a different medication sounds like its not working for u. valtrex does work wonders for outbreaks, i'm taking it at 500mg. if i have an outbreak i take it at the begining symptoms and it my outbreaks don't last for a week. but if u don't take it until u have an outbreak then it may take longer, maybe 2 weeks to heal depending on the sevarity.
if its the oral type and not a bad outbreak then u don't really need medication, u should use cold sore creams like Abreva or Lipactin. i have type 1 orally and genitally also have type 2.

  14. QUESTION:
What are the strange bumps on my cats chin?
I'm worried about my kitty. He has these strange, big, almost hard, red, swollen, sometimes bleeding bumps that he gets on the outside of his chin. He screamed like bloodly murder when I tried to touch one with a tissue. We recently moved to Florida but I don't have any idea what they could be. My cat is turning 5 years old soon and has a veterinary appointment on Friday. What could these bumps be??

    • ANSWER:
It does sound like feline acne, which can be caused by water that isn't clean enough or an allergic reaction to plastic water bowls. Try metal bowls or ceramic bowls to help clear that up.

You also may want to get your cat screened for herpes virus. Cats can get "cold sores" caused by herpes virus just like humans, which can cause blisters and open sores around the mouth. You'll most likely see this under times of stress, like when a cat has a cold or has recently moved. Your vet can tell you that while this is usually incurable (like cold sores) it can be treated by lysine, which is sort of like Vitamin C for cats. Regular lysine powder in the food can strengthen the cat's immune system and help them not get cold sores for the rest of their lives.

If it is herpes, DON'T WORRY! Would you give up your child because he gets cold sores? Seriously, this is a treatable condition, and lysine is very cheap!

  15. QUESTION:
What are these chicken skin like bumps around vulva?
I've noticed tiny white chicken-skin like bumps around my vulva, especially when I stretch the skin.
It's not on the lips, it's inside of them. They seem to be more prominent lately, maybe because I am about to have my monthly gift? Could it also be because I am undergoing immense stress? • ANSWER:
Ever had a cold sore before...then you have oral herpes. Cold sores are caused by the oral herpes virus. You can get them during child hood by being innocently kissed by some one that has cold sores, this could have happened to you when you were very young. They are very common to have 50-80 percent of the population has them on the mouth. They are so common most people don't worry about them too much.
It's not common but possible to get oral herpes on the inside of the mouth. Oral herpes usually comes with some itching, burning and or tingling symptoms around the site of the bumps, blisters or sores.
Or this could be strep throat. The sore throat could be unrelated to herpes. Strep throat causes painful white bumps inside of the mouth, sore throat and coughing.
I'm sorry hun but you wouldn't know for sure unless you visit a doctor and have the bumps tested.

Forget Harmeet's answer - oral herpes doesn't last for a year! Sounds like someone only half listened during sex education eh Harmeet?

Are you a guy? If so, and if the bumps are just under your lower lips and show more when you push your lips over your teeth, I fielded this exact question a month ago.

The answer there was "hey, you're getting facial hair". Remember that beard hair is pretty spiky, and facial skin is pretty thin. You can't shave UNDER the skin, so there's always stubble under the skin, and when the skin is tightened they "poke" underneath the skin to form little bumps. When you curl your lip over your lower teeth to take a look in the mirror, they're pretty apparent.

If that's not the case, then it could be any number of things and Yahoo! Answers is not likely to get it right. See a dermatologist.

  23. QUESTION:
Little bumps in vagina some crowded together, they go all the way down. What are they?
Inside my vagina i have like little bumps, and when you stretch the skin you can see them clearly, some are badly crowded together some are just spread out. Some are white and stick out alot some are flat.
I am sexually active, but I am my partners first and he is mine.
Im quite worried about what they are and getting self concious.
    Help?

    • ANSWER:
Do as everyone here is suggesting and go see a doctor. But before you worry yourself sick about an STD and accuse your boyfriend, keep in mind you could be experiencing any variety of problems. If you shave, and then have sex, your skin can get highly irritated and cause small infected bumps, or in-grown hairs which look a lot like acne.

If you do have HPV (genital warts), or HSV (herpes) you're not alone. Although these diseases can't be cured, both are extremely common and there are just tons of support groups out there. I contracted HSV when I was 22 and have a normal healthy happy sex life with well informed partners and I found great supportive friends on HPV/HSV websites. Also, you can catch an STD without having sex. If your boyfriend rubbed up on someone with an STD, or had oral sex from a girl who had a coldsore, he could have caught one. Same thing goes for you. I caught HSV during oral sex. Before you determine that he's a liar, figure out the truth, because he might be as scared as you are.

  24. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:
      Symptoms:

      * usually develop within 2 to 20 days after contact
      * could continue up to 2 weeks
      * may be so mild it goes unnoticed
      * may take longer or be less severe in some people, especially in those with partial immunity to the virus from having facial herpes, e.g. cold sores.
      * in the first attack sometimes causes visible sores
      * last between 10 - 21 days
      Other symptoms include:

      * swollen lymph glands
      * painful inflamed blisters develop around infected area
      * headache
      * muscle ache
      * fever
      * vaginal or penis discharge
      * infection of the urethra causing a burning sensation during urination
      * a burning sensation in the genitals
      * lower back pain
      * small red bumps may appear in the genital area following earlier symptoms, later developing into painful blisters, which crust over, form a scab, and heal.

Up to 60% of people who have genital HSV show no signs of the disease and are unaware that they are infected, but are capable of transmitting the virus to others (asymptomatic viral shedding).

  29. QUESTION:
What is the minimum time for oral herpes symptoms to show up?
Went to a club, made out with a girl, went home to apartment, woke up and have a itchy burny bump on lip.
less than 12 hours between kissing and discovery. Is it possible for it to incubate and show that fast???
kinda freaked out. small red bump on border between lip and normal skin. tingly. more i touch it the more it gets noticeable.

    • ANSWER:
Oral herpes doesn't usually show up that quickly. It takes at least a few days to a week to show symptoms, it can also take up to 3 weeks to show symptoms or longer because your body can some time suppress symptoms. Break outs can take about 1-3 weeks to heal.
If it showed up that fast then chances are you could have had them long before you were kissing this person or some thing else could have triggered a break out. Cold sores are usually triggered when you have a lowered or stressed out immune system. Most people usually contract cold sores during child hood by being innocently kissed by some one that has cold sores. They are very common to have but they are contagious while you have a break out. So don't kiss any one while you have any signs of a beak out

  30. QUESTION:
How quickly does the symptoms of herpes appear?
I know it varies but generally? and do herpes sores always burst? could they just dissapear? how long would they be in your vagina for?

    • ANSWER:
If you do get obvious symptoms they generally appear between 2 - 10 days. Then of course you could be exposed and not have an obvious symptom for 10 years or even ever!

Most people do have symptoms, but they do not realize that they are actually herpes symptoms. Most of us think that the horror stories we heard in sex ed are the norm. They are not. Most people with herpes (25 - 40% of the population) experience symptoms so mild they think they are panty irritation, yeast infection, or irritation from a new soap or detergent. Sometimes they appear to be an ingrown hair, heat rash or even a bug bite.

No, sores do not always burst. You may have a small bump that just goes away. It can be anywhere in the area a pair of shorts will cover. So yes, that bug bite on your butt cheek could actually be a herpes outbreak!

Herpes is very hard to self diagnose unless you have a typical outbreak. Since most of us do not, it is best to have a doctor diagnose it. If you actually have an outbreak the doctor can culture it. If not, you can have a blood test done 3-4 months after possible exposure. It takes that long for the antibodies to build up in your system.

How long after coming in contact with the herpes virus will one's first outbreak be?
I ask this because I may or may not have come in contact with someone who may have had herpes during an outbreak and this morning a cold sore appeared. How long would it take for symptoms to appear?

    • ANSWER:
      Symptoms:

usually develop within 2 to 20 days after contact
could continue up to 2 weeks
may be so mild it goes unnoticed
may take longer or be less severe in some people, especially in those with partial immunity to the virus from having facial herpes, e.g. cold sores.
in the first attack sometimes causes visible sores
      last between 10 - 21 days
The first episode is the most severe as most people have not been exposed to the virus before and antibodies will not have been produced to trigger the immune response.

When the herpes virus gets into skin cells it reproduces itself and starts to multiply, making the skin red and sensitive. Blisters or bumps may appear on the genital area, the blisters first opening, then healing with the regeneration of new skin tissue.

      The infected area:

is usually painful and may itch, burn or tingle, during the outbreak.
      Other symptoms include:

      swollen lymph glands
painful inflamed blisters develop around infected area
      headache
      muscle ache
      fever
      vaginal or penis discharge
infection of the urethra causing a burning sensation during urination
a burning sensation in the genitals
      lower back pain
small red bumps may appear in the genital area following earlier symptoms, later developing into painful blisters, which crust over, form a scab, and heal.
      No Symptoms:

Up to 60% of people who have genital HSV show no signs of the disease and are unaware that they are infected, but are capable of transmitting the virus to others (asymptomatic viral shedding).

      Recurrences

Subsequent recurrences of the virus may cause an outbreak of blisters.

      Recurrences:

are usually shorter and less severe than the initial episode
may decrease in both severity and frequency over time
are usually preceded by warning symptoms (also known as prodromal symptoms)
After the lesions have healed, and the symptoms of recurrence have ended, pain and discomfort in the genital area is still sometimes felt (post-herpetic neuralgia).

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be used to treat this condition. Some people find these drugs effective for the discomfort of the prodrome, and for the duration of the outbreak.

      How common are recurrences?

80% of persons having a first episode caused by HSV-2 will have at least one recurrence
50% of persons with HSV-1 will experience a recurrence
The most common scenario is occasional recurrences (about 4 attacks per year)
Usually, the first year has the most viral activity
A recurrence takes place when the virus replicates in the nerve ganglia and particles of virus travel along the nerve to the site of primary infection in the skin or mucous membranes (inner, moist lining of the mouth, vagina etc).

There are very subtle forms of recurring herpes found on the penis, vulva, anus, thigh and buttocks or anywhere in or around the genital area that heal very quickly (within a matter of days).

      Signs of Recurrent Outbreaks:

Breaks or irregularities in the skin, such as a cut, red bump or rash
Small sores or blisters that form a crust may occur anywhere in the region between the legs--thigh, buttocks, anus, or pubis
Healing occurs in half the time as the first outbreak

What brings on or "triggers" an outbreak or recurrence?

Although it is not known exactly why the virus reactivates at various times, both physical and/or psychological factors can bring on an outbreak.

      Physical Factors:

Physical factors differ from person to person, but may be caused from:

      being run-down
suffering from other genital infections (affecting the local skin area)
      menstruation
      drinking a lot of alcohol
exposure of the area to strong sunlight
conditions that compromise a person's immune system (where the body's immune system is not functioning normally)
      prolonged periods of stress
      ultraviolet light
friction or damage to the skin, caused by, for example, sexual intercourse, may also lead to a recurrence
      surgical trauma
anything that lowers your immune system or causes local injury can trigger recurrences.
      Psychological Factors:

periods of prolonged stress can cause more frequent recurrences
it is also common to experience stress and anxiety as a result of having recurrences.
      Prodrome

A warning sign (prodrome) is experienced by many people in recurring outbreaks. Warning symptoms which indicate the virus is becoming active, and is on its way to the skin's surface may include:

      itching
      tingling
      numbness
      burning
      general fatigue
      flu-like symptoms
      fever
swelling of the lymph nodes in the area of outbreak
      headache
      painful urination
pain in the buttocks, back of legs, lower back
Cycle of a typical outbreak or recurrence

The symptoms of an active herpes outbreak or recurrence may occur in the following phases.

      Symptomatic Course of the Disease:

      Inflammation
Swelling, tenderness, and/or redness that may appear before the

    • ANSWER:
HPV is human papiloma virus..some forms of it (as there are close to 40 different strains) can cause genital warts similar to those that are formed form herpes. Is it possible you are being treated for herpes when you should be treated for HPV? Symptoms of Herpes and HPV are similar with the "warts" and the burning itching sensations..however hpv you would get the sores inside as well as on the outer. If you google hpv yourself you will find the same info I just looked up for your benefit.

You should really talk to your doctor about that possibility because some strains of HPV cause cervical cancer.

  42. QUESTION:
What are the razor burn looking bumps i have?
My boyfriend and i had unprotected sex yesterday and today i noticed i have bumps "down there" that look like razor burn but i havnt shaved.. what could it be?

    • ANSWER:
You would not have herpes today if you had unprotected sex YESTERDAY. They take longer than that to develop.

  43. QUESTION:
What are the symptoms of genital herpes?
My friend has a brown spot below his penis and is extremely anxious that he may have genital herpes. Is a brown spot an early symptom before turning into genital herpes? Appreciate all the help.

    • ANSWER:
Herpes looks more like a raised blister or open sore then a pimple or bump and not all bumps or pimples are caused by herpes. There are a number of things it could be like a bacterial infection, cysts, or in grown hairs.
Usually with herpes there are some uncomfortable or pain full itching, burning and or tingling symptoms, you can also get flu like symptoms (basically feels like you're getting the flu), swelling in the genitals, burning pain when you urinate. Some people also report lower back pain or headaches. Symptoms can also vary from person to person that gets infected.
If he hasn't had oral sex or intercourse then it's not likely to be herpes. I think your friend is being overly paranoid about it but to know for sure he should see a doctor and have it checked out.

  44. QUESTION:
What does it meen if you have a couple of white bumps by your penis?
Well I have never seen thoes there befour. I just shaved and saw 3 bumps by my penis . But I have protected sex allways so. What is it?

    • ANSWER:
Small bumps on the penis can be a few things. Little white bumps on the shaft of the penis that don't hurt and are not red or swollen may be pimples or ingrown hairs. These are common and they're nothing to worry about. Another condition that's normal and no cause for concern is pearly penile papules. These whitish bumps appear on the glans (head) of the penis or along the edge of the glans in many guys. If you are or have been sexually active, bumps on the penis may be signs of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Painful blisters, bumps, or ulcers may be herpes. Another STD, genital warts (HPV) can show up as bumps on the penis. Sometimes these are irregular in shape or even barely seen, and they're not painful. Some other STDs, like syphilis, also can show up as painless ulcers on the penis. Although the bumps associated with STDs may not be painful, they could put your health and your partner's health at risk if they are not treated quickly and properly. Of course, the skin on the penis — like the skin anywhere else on a person's body — can get irritated. And it's often hard to distinguish normal bumps from those caused by an STD. So the only way to really know what your bumps are is to be examined by a doctor.
