Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What are some home remedies for Diabetes?
Recently a local new report stated that there is a new pill made with iron and seaweed that helps lower blood sugar. Are there other natural home remedies that aid in lowering blood sugar or normalizing blood sugar?

    • ANSWER:
The simplest, easiest home remedy is to just maintain a healthy weight. And if you're trying to do that as a diabetic or near-diabetic, substitute complex carbohydrates (whole grains, whole fruit and vegetables) for simple carbohydrates (sugar, high fructose corn syrup, white bread, white rice, etc.)

  2. QUESTION:
Any recommended Home Remedies for Diabetes?
Recently my dad is diagnose with diabetes and I was wondering if there are any home remedies that can help to reduce the level of diabetes. any working recommendations are appreciated.

  3. QUESTION:
Any home remedies/natural ways to prevent UTI?
I suffer from chronic UTI's almost monthly, and will all the meds im on to prevent them (ditropan XL, detrol LA, and Bactrim) along with drinking plenty of water, not drinking soda or teas and taking cranberry supplements. What are some other natural or home remedies to try to help me out? Also has anyone ever tried clear tract or tried d-mannose? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I have heard good reports about d-mannose. I know one medical doctor who has juvenile diabetes & it helps w/ protein in urine for him & has (he believes) extended his life.

Here are some herbs known to be urinary antiseptics: Angelica root, Bearberry (Uva Ursi), Celery seed, Goldenrod, Juniper, Meadowsweet (also soothing & pain relieving), Saw Palmetto, Yarrow. Try making any one of these into a tea and drinking one or more cups per day. I would lean toward Angelica root, which is a digestive, or Meadowsweet, which contains salycin (like aspirin). Saw Palmetto, Juniper & Bearberry are all somewhat harsh and only for short term use.

Years ago when I was taking birth control pills I also had frequent UTIs. Got some relief by a surgeon enlarging the opening of my bladder. The problem didn't completely stop until I stopped taking the pill.

  4. QUESTION:
What are some home remedies for chilblains?
I think I have it but I'm not sure. The symptoms sound like mine. But I don't want to go out and buy some creams if I don't have. Does someone have an at home remedy I can use?

    • ANSWER:
Here is a link regarding home remedies, what causes them, etc:
      http://www.best-home-remedies.com/skin_disorders/chilblains.htm

The best way to avoid them is to wear thick socks and gloves in cold weather, avoid getting hands and feet wet or damp at all in cold weather, and avoid warming your hands and feet too quickly if they do get cold. Never put very cold hands or feet directly in front of a fire for instance or that could trigger them.

If you have diabetes and develop chillblains.... see your GP or diabetic nurse.

      Best wishes.

  5. QUESTION:
TMJ Disorder - Are there any home remedies to curing this?
I have been suffering from TMJ for several years now. I have tried the mouth splint and it didn't help, it actually made it worse. Are there any home remedies that you can suggest that may be helpful in curing or elevating the symptoms? Thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
      TMJ Syndrome Symptoms and Signs

Pain in the facial muscles and jaw joints may radiate to the neck or shoulders. Joints may be overstretched. You may experience muscle spasms from TMJ syndrome. You may feel pain every time you talk, chew, or yawn. Pain usually appears in the joint itself, in front of the ear, but it may move elsewhere in the skull, face, or jaw and lead to headaches, dizziness, and even migraines.
TMJ syndrome may cause ear pain, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and hearing loss. Sometimes people mistake TMJ pain for an ear problem, such as an ear infection, when the ear is not the problem at all.
When the joints move, you may hear sounds, such as clicking, grating, and/or popping. Others may also be able to hear the sounds. Clicking and popping are common. This means the disc may be in an abnormal position. Sometimes no treatment is needed if the sounds give you no pain.
Your face and mouth may swell on the affected side.
The jaw may lock wide open (then it is dislocated), or it may not open fully at all. Also, upon opening, the lower jaw may deviate to one side. You may find yourself favoring one painful side or the other by opening your jaw awkwardly. These changes could be sudden. Your teeth may not fit properly together, and your bite may feel odd.
You may have trouble swallowing because of the muscle spasms.
Headache and dizziness may be caused by TMJ syndrome. You may feel nauseous or vomit.

Cheap at home remedies for asthma and diabetes?
Lately, I believe I've been having really bad health problems. Asthma is acting up due to allergies, I'm a diabetic that hasn't been to a doctor in over a year now due to having no health insurance. My feet are numb, and I'm on them all day while at work, by the end of the night I can barely walk. And my poor brain just won't function, I've lost my wallet three times in the last week. I find it, and then less than 20 hours later I've misplaced it again. I can barely remember anything that I've done in the last few days, and if I try to remember something important I almost always forget, most of the time right after someone asks me to do something. I'll take two steps, and wonder what I was going to do. I feel very lost, and don't know what to do. Does anyone know some cheap at home remedies to keep these things under control? As I've stated, I have no health insurance, and am still trying to pay off an ER visit from January. I really can't afford any doctors visits or anything like that.

How do I get rid of calluses on my feet?
I have calluses on my feet and that's okay but what's not okay is that it opens up and a wound appears. It really hurts every time I step on the ground. How do I get rid of it? Any home remedies? What could be the cause it? Is it normal for a teenager age 15 to get calluses that opens up and wounds itself? Do I have diabetes? Sorry for the long questions but I just wanna make sure. Oh, and sometimes the callus peel its layer of skin by itself (like when having a sunburn for days, the layers of skin will peel itself) thus, giving itself wounds. I really hate this. What could have done this? How do I get rid of this? Please answer me! I need all your help. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
There is cream available against callus in every drugstore, so you might get some. These calluses open only if you have to much and you should use even than some cream, the best is than an healing cream. Most of the times it comes if the feet are really dry. Wearing socks might help, even to stop the growing of it. Than you have some hard stones or an callus rasp that helps to reduce this as well, so you have to take more care about your feet..

  15. QUESTION:
What can cure the frequent need to urinate?
I have been to the doc, and had many tests....Prostate test, STD test, ultrasound, diabetes.. they found nothing wrong. But i need to urinate very often, and i never seem to be able to empty my bladder completely. Does anyone have any home remedies?
They have tested my urine, tested my blood, and even tested my "yknow". They found nothing. This is why i am asking the general public, as i have already wasted enough enough money on ultrasounds, doctor bills, etc.. Thanks anyway.

    • ANSWER:
It would be virtually impossible to prescribe any remedy, home or otherwise, to someone when no one has any idea what is causing the problem. It could be prostate related, or a medicine that you are taking or even cancer.

I would suggest going to a competent urologist to find out what is causing the problem before trying to figure out how to solve it on your own.

    • ANSWER:
I am very pleased that I have lost about 12lbs in two weeks. This one needs dedication... I mean its not easy, but it did work. I'll be honest with you, I did feel a little hungy at most times, well as the saying goes "no pain, no gain". I did not eat any rice, any kind of pasta, or junk food at all. I just stick with fruits in the morning like a banana or apple, salad with a few toppings and dressing at lunch, baked fish or lean meat any kind (small portion) with veggies on dinner.Limit your food intake specially at night. Sorry but no other faster way to lose weight but through exercise. Without exsercise you will lose wight but not that fast. My advise is go to the gym at night time (at least 1 hr of jogging). Drink a lot of water. For me I felt healthy with no problems. I also drink multi vitamins. Do not do this if you already have problems with your health. like high blood pressure, heart problems, or diabetes. Good Luck!!

  17. QUESTION:
Safe, effective way to detoxify your system without buying one of the expensive kits?
    Home remedies?

    • ANSWER:
If you don't have a serious illness like Diabetes or something, this will work. Fast every other day for seven days straight. When you eat, your body is busy working on the food you eat. When you fast it focuses on your organs and cleaning them out. While you're doing this, drink plenty of water. Especially on your fasting days. Also drink 2 to 3 8 oz glasses of green tea each day. If you can't go a whole day without eating, make sure what you eat contains no carbs or artificial sugars. Same thing goes for eating days. When you do eat don't gorge and eat healthy.
On the 4th and 7th day, use a detoxifying shampoo and a really good conditioner (detox shampoo can dry out your hair). Toxins also come out in our hair follicles. By the seventh day, you will feel better, detoxified and even a little lighter.

so are there any home remedies?
And how long will it take? I have to pee like every two minutes. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Your urinary tract is the system that makes urine and carries it out of your body. It includes your bladder and kidneys and the tubes that connect them. When germs get into this system, they can cause an infection.

Most urinary tract infections are bladder infections. A bladder infection usually is not serious if it is treated right away. If you do not take care of a bladder infection, it can spread to your kidneys. A kidney infection is serious and can cause permanent damage.

      What causes urinary tract infections?
Usually, germs get into your system through your urethra, the tube that carries urine from your bladder to the outside of your body. The germs that usually cause these infections live in your large intestine and are found in your stool. If these germs get inside your urethra, they can travel up into your bladder and kidneys and cause an infection.

Women tend to get more bladder infections than men. This is probably because women have shorter urethras, so it is easier for the germs to move up to their bladders. Having sex can make it easier for germs to get into your urethra.

You may be more likely to get an infection if you do not drink enough fluids, you have diabetes, or you are pregnant. The chance that you will get a bladder infection is higher if you have any problem that blocks the flow of urine from your bladder. Examples include having kidney stones or an enlarged prostate gland.

For reasons that are not well understood, some women get bladder infections again and again.

      What are the symptoms?
You may have an infection if you have any of these symptoms:

You feel pain or burning when you urinate.
You feel like you have to urinate often, but not much urine comes out when you do.
Your belly feels tender or heavy.
Your urine is cloudy or smells bad.
You have pain on one side of your back under your ribs. This is where your kidneys are.
      You have fever and chills.
      You have nausea and vomiting.
Call your doctor right away if you think you have an infection and:

You have a fever, nausea and vomiting, or pain in one side of your back under your ribs.
You have diabetes, kidney problems, or a weak immune system.
      You are older than 65.
      You are pregnant.
Antibiotics prescribed by your doctor will usually cure a bladder infection. It may help to drink lots of water and other fluids and to urinate often, emptying your bladder each time.

If your doctor prescribes antibiotics, take the pills exactly as you are told. Do not stop taking them just because you feel better. You need to finish taking them all so that you do not get sick again.

Can urinary tract infections be prevented?
You can help prevent these infections.

Drink lots of water every day.
Urinate often. Do not try to hold it.
If you are a woman, urinate right after having sex.
Postmenopausal women may want to ask their doctors about using vaginal estrogen to prevent recurrent UTIs.

What are some techniques for controlling blood sugar?
I'm a type-I diabetic with an insulin pump. I tend to watch what I eat and I check my blood sugar regularly. But sometimes it goes out of control.

      http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.com/book/chapter10.shtml

2 chapters from Dr Bernstein's book. They should help you with your food planning.

Life is hard, then, we have this thing called diabetes which confuses us in the extreme. It is really hard to get all the elements: food planning, exercise, medications, and sleep all into conformance so we stay fairly level.

Food control keeps the insulins from packing on the carbos in the form of fat on our bods!

  23. QUESTION:
What can I do to stop a toothache temporarily?
    Hi there,

My grandfather has a decayed tooth at the back of his mouth and he has been telling me how painful it is. He is going to get it extracted but keeps putting it off (you know how old people are, and it really pains me to see him in pain). I'm trying my best to get him to visit the dentist and get it extracted soon. So before he actually gets it extracted, is there any home remedies that I could use to help him stop the pain temporarily?

    • ANSWER:
I am so sorry for your Gpa's pain! If he has any ibuprofen (and can take that) use that. The reason there is pain is because there is infection (caused by the decay) He really needs an antibiotic and as you said, get it out. If it goes untreated, the infection can enter his blood stream and may kill him. This is especially important for older people as they often have other medical issues(diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial joints, heart problems etc...). If he won't go to the dentist, at least go to the regular doctor or the er to get the antibiotic. That would get him out of pain and buy a little time to get the tooth pulled. Unlike other infections, it will come back after he runs out of antibiotic.

  26. QUESTION:
Is there someone out there that knows about male yeast infections?
and if so how can it be treated and how does it occur? I have been to the dr twice and have had a urinalysis then I had the cbc blood test and all has come back negative. Home remedies are ok but they are messy and most smell bad.Help needed badly. So thank you all for all of your help.

    • ANSWER:
Yeast infections in guys or gals are difficult to get rid of. People can get yeast in any dark moist area of the body. Women are more prone, but men have plenty of dark moist areas! Over the counter meds work just fine. E. G. Miconozole, Monostat... The key is to stick with treatment every single day for 2 full weeks. Like antibiotics, you have to complete the full treatment. Another thing that helps is to stop eating all sugar. Sugar feeds yeast. If you are taking an antibiotic that can make the yeast worse because the antibiotic kills off all the bacteria; even the good ones that eat yeast. To restore your body's balance, eat yogurt with live bacteria.
What do you mean that your blood tests all came back negative? Negative for yeast? Negative for sugar diabetes? You should be checked for diabetes. It is a common factor in recalcitrant yeast infections.

Hi i just found that my best friend got diabetes and i was searching up if there is anything else that can cure diabetes i heard that cinnamon and chronium picolinate is that true? And can someone tell me other home remedies thank you

    • ANSWER:
"The study, entitled Reversal of type 2 diabetes: normalization of beta cell function in association with decrease pancreas and liver triglycerides, was exquisitely done. The bottom line: A dramatic diet change (protein shake, low glycemic load, plant-based low-calorie diet but no exercise) in diabetics reversed most features of diabetes within one week and all features by eight weeks. That’s right, diabetes was reversed in one week. That’s more powerful than any drug known to modern science.

We know from gastric bypass patients that with rapid changes in diet right after surgery, within just a few days, without significant weight loss, diabetes goes away—fatty livers heal, cholesterol levels plummet. Some theorized it was because of changes in the stomach hormones related to the gastric surgery. Others, including the researchers of this new study surmised that maybe it was just the drastic change in diet. So they went about studying just the diet change without surgery.

They studied 11 people with diabetes and compared them to a control group. Through very sophisticated techniques including MRI imaging, they measured their blood sugar and insulin responses, cholesterol levels and fat in the pancreas and liver (some of the hallmarks of diabetes) before and after diet changes at 1, 4 and 8 weeks.

What they found was revolutionary. The beta cells—the pancreas’ insulin producing cells—woke up, and the fat deposits in the pancreas and liver went away. Blood sugars normalized in just one week, triglycerides dropped in half in one week and reduced 10-fold in eight weeks. The body’s cells became more insulin sensitive and essentially, in just 8 weeks, all evidence of diabetes was gone and the diabetic patients looked just like the normal controls on all the testing."

  31. QUESTION:
Are there any home remedies for an ingrown hair in the groin area?
I had an ingrown hair removed from my groin area in Nov. 2006. It went from the size of a quarter to the size of a baseball within three days. I had to be hospitalized for the surgery. It was exacerbated by diabetes. The symptoms came back in approx. the same area two days ago,and has doubled in size already. Aside from going to a doctor, is there anything I can do at home to remedy this? The surgeon said it was an ingrown hair, but it was so big, I think it may be a cyst or boil. It is some kind of abcess, and it is already red and swollen. I have no insurance, and cannot afford another surgery. The last surgery cost over ,000, which I can't afford to pay for. I can't squeeze it, it is already too sore. It is very deep just like the last one.

    • ANSWER:
If it keeps coming back in the same area, it might be Hidradenitis Suppurativa. You can check out http://www.hs-usa.org for more info.

In the meantime, hot compresses and hot baths will help to bring it to a head and burst. You can add Epsom salts to the bathwater to help the process.

If it is really that painful, you can get Vick's Vapo Rub CREAM (not the goop that we all grew up with) and smear it on there. The menthol in the Vapo Rub will numb the area a bit and it will feel like a cool breeze on a hot summer's day...

If the hot baths/compresses do not work, you will probably have to have it I&D'ed by a doctor. I would suggest going to an Urgent Care Center to have this done.

If you do get it I&D'ed, make sure you ask them to do a culture. If it is HS, the lesion might be sterile... and therefore there would be no need for antibiotics.

  32. QUESTION:
What causes sleep problems and body aches?
Very long story short, I am a 31 year old married mother of two. My only real medical history is MVP and ITP, both are well controlled and do not require medication.

Over the past 6 or 7 years have battled body aches, severe at times, almost debilitating. They went from every few months to almost every day. Flu-like and concentrated around my joints at times, although not exclusively.

I have recently, within the last few months been battling sleep problems as well, I can sleep a couple of hours when I first lay down, but within 2 hours, I am startled awake and cant fall back to sleep. If I do, its no more than 20 minutes and I am back up. I do this for several hours, before I finally fall asleep just about the time my kids are waking up! :)

Not sure if it is pertinent or not, but I have also been experiencing some digestive problems recently at times.

I saw my PCP, a new one, because mine moved out of state... My new doc said it may be fibromyalgia, and referred me to a rheumatologist, but I cant get in until the end if July because they are so busy.

I have also recently tried to g gluten-free, on the advice of a friend who has a gluten allergy. It seems to have helped the body aches quite a bit, maybe not the digestive problems, and not helped at all with the sleep problems.

My question is, are these all most likely related, unrelated, and/or, any ideas on what it might be, home-remedies, tests to request, etc. ? I am desperate!

    Thanks!
Also, I have chills with the aches, and sometime without them. No fever that I know of.
Thank you both so much! Not that I wish it on anyone, but glad to know I am not alone! I was beginning to think I was crazy! :) i have had a few tests for vitamin levels, routine labs, and thyroid, but all came back fine. I will check out the info on Celiac and going gluten free... I thnk I might be doing it wrong! :)

    • ANSWER:
Unfortunately, there's no real way to know.

One problem is that your friend, while trying to help you, has made it so that getting diagnosed with celiac disease (aka gluten allergy) is going to be extremely difficult, if not impossible. A gluten allergy is kind of a misnamed condition: it's not a real allergy. It's actually an auto-immune disease where the immune system attacks the gut when gluten is ingested. It's closer to Diabetes - where the immune system attacks a body part and causes damage - than a real allergy. But because it involved the immune system, doctors used to call it an allergy and many still do, even though celiac disease is now the preferred term.

But because it is NOT an allergy, there is no allergy test for this. The blood test for this looks at your body's reaction to gluten, and it's not very sensitive. So a person would need to eat about 2 slices of bread a day for 4-6 weeks in order to have enough damage to test positive. And once you go gluten free, if you start eating gluten again, many celiacs have much WORSE symptoms and are unable to continue eating gluten. :-/

In a few years, there will hopefully be tests available to most people which do not require this, but not yet.

That said: gluten could actually be the entire problem. IF you have celiac disease, which is SO often overlooked by doctors, you may not realize just how much gluten you have to avoid. For this diet, it is not just 'eating gluten free.' Celiac disease is quite sensitive to gluten, about as sensitive to gluten as a severely peanut allergic person is sensitive to peanuts. So a celiac must avoid gluten AND gluten contamination. This may mean scouring out one's pots and pans, not sharing certain cooking equipment that can't be scoured properly or is porous to gluten, avoiding foods that are just 'no gluten ingredients' because these can have gluten contamination from the factory. Even kissing someone who just ate gluten can make a celiac sick.

The fact that it has helped some is a good sign that you may be on the right track, at least in my experience. Many celiacs have the same experience, where some symptoms go away, but some remained. Often, once they completely eliminated all gluten contamination from their diet (and hygiene supplies, makeup, and so on), all their symptoms went away. A forum like the one at celiac.com can be very helpful in figuring out how to do this.

For me - I had aches and pains, insomnia, flu like symptoms, feeling chilled or cold, that sort of thing. The problems responsible for this were: undiagnosed celiac disease, undiagnosed sulfite sensitivity, undiagnosed food allergies and intolerances. One of the things that causes me a lot of insomnia and problems is anything in the grain family. I'm seeing a slowly growing group of people who are reporting the same thing, although I have seen nothing being explored in the medical community on this yet.

Mild food allergies and intolerances can cause your types of symptoms as well, including the chills, and many people I know of with one may have others, too. An elimination diet is often required to track them down.

The GAPS diet is made for people who are having a lot of digestive and physical problems. It avoids a lot of major allergens; I know a number of people who had a lot of success tracking down their problem foods with this.

Other conditions I know of that you might want to explore:
      Lyme disease
Valley Fever (an odd one, really only relevant if you live in southern Arizona or California, or have been there for a long while, but if it disseminates and gets into your joints, it would cause a lot of problems.)

Re: fibro - you might want to explore online. There are specific places that are a lot more painful to pressure with this condition, so if you could find a 'check yourself out' type of website that told what they are and how the pain is in those regions, you might at least be able to tell if this is more likely or not, you know?

Wishing you good luck, from someone whose been there!

  33. QUESTION:
How can I get stronger nails?
Are there any home remedies that can not only make my nails stronger, but can make them less prone to breaking and peeling? Peeling is really my biggest issue.
    Thank you. X

    • ANSWER:
      1. To keep your nails hydrated, rub a small amount of petroleum jelly into your cuticle and the skin surrounding your nails every evening before you go to bed or whenever your nails feel dry. Keep a jar in your purse, desk drawer, car — anywhere you might need it. Not a fan of petroleum jelly? Substitute castor oil. It’s thick and contains vitamin E, which is great for your cuticles. Or head to your kitchen cupboard and grab the olive oil — it also works to moisturize your nails.

      2. Wear rubber gloves whenever you do housework or wash dishes. Most household chores, from gardening to scrubbing the bathroom to washing dishes, are murderous on your nails. To protect your digits from dirt and harsh cleaners, cover them with vinyl gloves whenever it’s chore time. And for extra hand softness, apply hand cream before you put on the rubber gloves.

      3. When pushing back your cuticles (it is not necessary to cut them) come in at a 45-degree angle and be very gentle. Otherwise the cuticle will become damaged, weakening the entire nail, says Mariana Diaconescu, manicurist at the Pierre Michel Salon in New York City.

      4. Trim your toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails. This is particularly important if you have diabetes.

      5. Dry your hands for at least two minutes after doing the dishes, taking a bath/shower, etc. Also dry your toes thoroughly after swimming or showering. Leaving them damp increases your risk of fungal infection.

      6. Air out your work boots and athletic shoes. Better yet, keep two pairs and switch between them so you’re never putting your feet into damp, sweaty shoes, which could lead to fungal infections.

      7. Wear 100 percent cotton socks. They’re best for absorbing dampness, thus preventing fungal infections.

      8. Stretch out the beauty of a manicure by applying a fresh top coat every day, says Susie Galvez, owner of Face Works Day Spa in Richmond, Virginia, and author of Hello Beautiful: 365 Ways to Be Even More Beautiful.

      9. Make your nails as strong as a horse’s hooves, and take 300 micrograms of the B vitamin biotin four to six times a day. Long ago, veterinarians discovered that biotin strengthened horses’ hooves, which are made from keratin, the same substance in human nails. Swiss researchers found that people who took 2.5 milligrams of biotin a day for 5.5 months had firmer, harder nails. In a U.S. study, 63 percent of people taking biotin for brittle nails experienced an improvement.

      10. Add a glass of milk and a hard-boiled egg to your daily diet. Rich in zinc, they’ll do wonders for your nails, especially if your nails are spotted with white, a sign of low zinc intake.

      11. File your nails correctly. To keep your nails at their strongest, avoid filing in a back-and-forth motion — only go in one direction. And never file just after you’ve gotten out of a shower or bath — wet nails break more easily.

      12. Massage your nails to keep them extra strong and shiny. Nails buffing increases blood supply to the nail, which stimulates the matrix of the nail to grow, says Galvez.

      13. Polish your nails, even if it’s just with a clear coat. It protects your nails, says manicurist Diaconescu. If you prefer color, use a base coat, two thin coats of color, and a top coat. Color should last at least seven days but should be removed after 10 days.

      14. Avoid polish removers with acetone or formaldehyde. They’re terribly drying to nails, says Andrea Lynn Cambio, M.D., a New York City dermatologist. Use acetate-based removers instead.

  34. QUESTION:
How to eliminate bloating from too many veggies?
So, the past couple days I have been going vegetable crazy and eating nearly an unnatural amount: with each meal, snacks in between meal, etc. as you could imagine, this has left me extremely gassy and bloated. I was wondering if you knew of any home remedies that could help eliminate it?

Also, is eating a lot of veggies like this unhealthy?

    • ANSWER:
Vegetables, fruits, wheat and oat bran are common fiber-rich foods, but eating too much of these foods together may cause bloating. Ensure that you are eating balanced amounts of soluble and insoluble fiber. Both types are important for healthy digestion and to help prevent constipation, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and other disorders.
Drink six to eight glasses of water per day. Soluble fiber absorbs water in the intestines, it is important to be sufficiently hydrated for healthy digestion. Go for a 10-minute walk. Even light exercise can help gas pass through your digestive tract more quickly.

  36. QUESTION:
I would like toknow ow to cure Bad breath?
My little brother has bad breath and i'd like to know the best way for him to cure it? are there any home remedies that he can try that will help him? Also is it true tht eating yogurt for 6 weeks will cure it?

    • ANSWER:
Your brother should go to the doctor since underlying health conditions like diabetes can cause bad breath. Have him go to a general practitioner, have them run some blood tests, and have the doctor recommend him to the appropriate specialist(s).

One should be brushing after every meal, roughly three times per day for at least two minutes at a time. One should be using floss after every meal, and use mouthwash and a tongue scraper at least twice each day. Pay attention to what kinds of foods that one is eating, and avoid milk, garlic, onions, etc. Dry mouth and post nasal drip can cause bad breath, so keep hydrated and try nasal spray/drops. Have regular dental checkups (roughly once every six months) to ensure that you do not have cavities or gum disease.

One might want to avoid gum and mints that contain sugar because sugar actually FEEDS the bad breath-causing bacteria!

One can also try natural cures such as baking soda, green cardamom, parsley/mint garnishes, brussel sprouts, and green tea. These help deodorize the halitosis. Also, since yogurt and probiotics have good bacteria, he should have that as well.

  37. QUESTION:
What's the quickest way to get rid of a boil?
have no insurance so any home remedies......How big do they get?

    • ANSWER:
DO NOT pick at the boil and try to open it on your own....that can lead to possible serious infections (like staph) a warm/hot moist towel laid on the area will help with the pain and possibly draw the boil to a head so that it will pop on its own....when it does open up, medicated ointment and a large bandage to cover it so no infection can get into it....please don't try to pop it on your own cause it could make it so much worse....and they can get very big and very painful...if it gets too big and painful start saving for a doctor visit or go to the E.R. the e.r. can't turn you away and if it gets big and severly painful a doctor is your best bet because it could be signs of something serious (like diabetes or staph)....Good luck to you!

Oh and you gotta keep putting that hot moist towel on it....not just once....as much as you can!

  38. QUESTION:
Any home remedies for ovary cyst?
Hi does anybody know of some good safe home remedies to get rid of ovaries cyst?

    • ANSWER:
If this is PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) it is often associated with obesity or overweight. This means weight loss can help. The symptoms roughly resemble that of type II diabetes, so a diabetic-centered diet can help to keep symptoms in check. This is easier said than done, however. It will require a tremendous amount of discipline, planning and effort to stay current with the diet.

Get your physician to give you a referral to a dietitian who specializes in or has familiarity with the syndrome. I HIGHLY recommend that you don't go about doing this "by yourself." There is a lot of misinformation on the internet about "special diets" for PCOS that are mostly smoke and mirrors.

Keep in mind, however, that the nutrition therapy will only go so far. You may need to consider a medical intervention in addition if you don't see progress after some time.

  39. QUESTION:
How do I get rid of the smell?
Does anyone know how to get rid of the sweat smell? I use deodorant and perfume and Yes i shower. What can I do? Any home remedies for this, or any medicines? PLEASE help!

    • ANSWER:
Excessive sweating or sweat odor could be a sign of a condition called Hyperhidrosis. Hyperhydrosis is a kind of condition that causes sweating especially during times of light or no activity. Some grow out of this condition as they get older. Others, like me, do not. I continued to sweat especially at night or during classes. It was very annoying and I did not know what to do.
I joined an online hyperhidrosis community where people shared their experiences. Hyperhidrosis, like diabetes, can be controlled through diet, exercise and natural treatments.

I really suggest you take a look at the online hyperhidrosis site that I joined; they have a “Stop Sweating and Start Living Guide” to help you treat excessive sweating that really helped me!! I've included the source below.

I hope this information helps :) And let me know if you need any help!

What is a good treatment for dry, flaky skin?
Can you recommend any creams, treatments, ointments, home-remedies, etc?

    • ANSWER:
My mother had dry and flaky skin because of diabetes. Her visiting nurse told me to get her Eucerin and A&D ointment and mix them together. After she takes a bath, before bed, she rubs the mixture on her legs and feet. They are so soft and smooth and flake free. It took about 10 days of application. She continues to use it so the flakes do not come back. It's a bit greasy, so she sleeps in socks and PJ's.

what can I use to feel relief and see results from psoriasis?
Does anyone have any home remedies for psoriasis other than using over the counter medicines?

    • ANSWER:
Food allergies, especially to yeast-containing foods, can be a significant factor.

Candidiasis can also contribute to psoriasis. There is an increased incidence of candidiasis in the bowels of people with psoriasis, and, if present, the patient must avoid all foods high in yeast, such as baked goods, cheese, mushrooms, vinegar, soy sauce, fermented foods, alcohol, and pickles.

keep in mind that tension can aggravate psoriasis. Regular exercise and relaxation exercises will help.

Essential Fatty Acids : 1,000 mg fish oils 3 times a day; 1 tbsp. (14 grams) flaxseed oil each morning. People with diabetes should take less than 2,000 mg of fish oils a day; higher doses can worsen blood sugar control.
No matter what other treatment you may be using for psoriasis, take this supplement.

Grape Seed Extract : 100 mg twice a day. Standardized to contain 92%-95% proanthocyanidins.

Alpha-lipoic Acid : 150 mg each morning. Can be taken with or without food.

Vitamin A : 25,000 IU a day for 1 month, then 10,000 IU daily. Women who are pregnant or considering pregnancy should not exceed 5,000 IU a day.

Zinc/Copper : 30 mg zinc and 2 mg copper a day. Add copper only when using zinc longer than 1 month.

Milk Thistle : 150 mg twice a day.Standardized to contain at least 70% silymarin.

  46. QUESTION:
What are some treatments for Acid Reflux?
Are there home remedies? Also if the case is very serious will a surgery treat it?
This is for a project in class, so please give thorough answers.
    thank you =)

    • ANSWER:
Most cases of acid reflux - low stomach acid and/or lack of digestive enzymes. The remedy is to improve acid or help break down food to prevent acid reflux from occuring. The old remedy apple cider vinegar is one that works, aloe vera juice is another but a very effective remedy is digestive enzyme supplements. You can purchase enzymes with betaine hydrochloride to increase stomach acid. High acid is found in small percentage of people but increasing digestive enzymes also prevent acid reflux...see the link on how digestion works below.

My mother had Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) - suffered severely for 5 years but within 2 weeks of digestive enzyme supplements both LPR and GERD were gone and a 85% improvement with gastritis (suffered for 25 years) with digestive enzyme supplements within 6 months!

      Reasons for acid reflux>>>.

Lack of digestive enzymes in the diet - enzymes are destroyed when heated above over 118F or 50C).

Poor diet, stress, nutrient deficiencies, improper eating habits, poor chewing and overeating can all contribute an insufficiency of digestive juices.

High acid due to lack of enzymes. Some conditions that cause acid reflux due to low stomach acid - stomach acid lowers with age, achlorhydria (no stomach acid), asthma, celiac disease, diabetes melitis, pernicious anaemia, helicobacter pylori.

Some conditions that cause acid reflux due to pressure on the esophageal sphincter - hiatus hernia, pregnancy, obesity.

The operation to so call "correct" acid reflux is called a Nissen fundification. Jose Remes-Troche, MD, of the Institute of Science, Medicine, and Nutrition in Mexico, reported in The American Journal of Surgery that symptoms don’t always go away after a fundification, which involves wrapping a part of the stomach around the weak part of the esophagus. This is a good reason why it is on the surgeries to avoid list>>>http://www.health.com/health/article/0,,20410879_5,00.html

  47. QUESTION:
pls help me why is that each time my period finishes i will get bad sore throat.?
i am in late forties the mucos in my throat and nose becomes very dry and i feel miserable.any home remedies please.

    • ANSWER:
A sore throat is almost always an immune response. I have no bloody idea (excuse the pun, please) why it should or would occur after your menstrual periods. My closest guess is that through menstruating, you somehow become either immuno-suppressed or immuno-compromised slightly. Are you anaemic (iron-deficient), and the bleeding is making this worse? To see if you're anaemic, press hard on anyone of your fingernail beds. If it turns white, and stays white, you're anaemic. Are cuts and bruises taking a long time to heal on you, too? Go to the doc and get tested for anaemia, diabetes and the host of other things it could be. Pull your bottom lip down. Is it a lovely bright red, or is it pale and getting paler? Have you brought the issue(s) up with either your Gyno or your GP/PCP? Were it me, I'd do the following: 1) Start eating a LOT more greens, fresh veggies, fresh juices w/ lots of garlic and ginger, and start taking vitamins and minerals and herbs for my immune and endocrine systems. Best of luck to you. I'd also look at supplementing w/ Flouradix Iron w/ Herbs and lots of herbs such as garlic, yellow dock, dandelion, burdock, cress, red clover, all greens, alfalfa, NETTLE. Some local fresh honey, propolis and royal jelly couldn't hurt, either. Honey is EXTREMELY medicinal and healing. Royal jelly is a superfood and extremely tonifying for women. Propolis is extremely anti-bacterial, -viral, and -fungal. Try to get organic, raw, local honey, ie go to a farmer's market and have a chat with the honey grower there, or go to your local co-op or healthfood store. I'd also look at eating some serious meat once in awhile if you're a vegetarian, and if you're vegan, I'd stop being vegan. When folks start getting immune responses they don't understand, and start getting sicknesses all the time, AND they're eating a highly restricitive diet, that's your body's way of telling you to quit it, so listen. Also try ginseng and germanium or a rare earth supplement, especially if you're having weird food cravings that you can't seem to satisfy. That's another way your body has to tell you it's deficient in something. It can't exactly write ya a letter or take out a billboard, ya know? If you email me and tell me more about your health, your body type and your diet, I can almost certainly help you to pin point exactly what's going on, or send you to someone in your area who can.

  49. QUESTION:
What are all the benefits of Olive oil?
    Hey there,
What are ALL the benefits of Olive oil? I know that u can use it for hair, skin,... what else?
What are your best home remedies using olive oil?
What does it mix well with (as far as essential oils goes? plants...)
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
although the vco has a lot more
olive oil is safe if you do not cook it.. new studies show that cooking the oil can destroy its genetics making it "rancid" as its not "heat stable" however VCO from the link is stable up to 350F so keep that in mind. I use the VCO in all my cooking and eating and have lost a few medical problems 20? so yes it does help a lot! check out the site it has a health benefits list much longer then the olive oil.
olive oil may have a few similar to the VCO but I think the VCO has a lot more and has more use for it. for example I use it when I shower, get sick, need to fix a squeaky door, remove some glue as oily removes sticky, on cuts, memory problems, my dads dementia, etc

Olive oil health benefits...Extra virgin olive oil is a natural juice full of flavor and aroma, with high vitamin A, D, K and E content. It has an anti-oxidant effect on the human body cells ? 80% of extra virgin olive stimulates bone growth, and calcium absorption.

      Olive oil and Heart Disease
      Olive Oil And Cancer
      Olive Oil And Diabetes
      Olive Oil and Pain
      Olive Oil and Blood Pressure
      Olive Oil and Bone Health
      Olive Oil And Arthritis
      Olive Oil and Gallstones
Olive Oil and Colds,Coughs, Sore Throats
      Olive Oil and Painful Joints
      Olive Oil And Skincare Health
      Strengthens Immune System

its not 160 health benefits like the VCO but it has a few :)

again this oil is safe when "cold" its not safe at high heat!
and the glass jar has to be dark amber and some studies suggest
the oil is bad "while still in the jar!" before you take it home.

so.. please please please keep this in mind if your going to use it..

It is true. Not all olive oils are created equal. Extra-virgin olive oil is different from virgin olive oil, which is also different in nutritional quality from pure or light olive oil. It matters whether an olive oil is made organically, naturally, using the cold-pressed or heat method, etc.

see even the website article agrees with me!

      http://www.health-benefits-of-olive-oil.com/olive-oil-ingredients.html
that's the link on the olive oil :)

      my advice? check out both..
the olive oil and the VCO.

  50. QUESTION:
What causes you to get a yeast infection?
What are the causes to a yeast infection? What are some home made remedies that can help cure it?

    • ANSWER:
Candidiasis, commonly called yeast infection, is the most frequent infection acquired by women and is one of the most common reasons that women consult healthcare professionals. Yeast infections result from an overgrowth of a species of fungus called Candida albicans. Fungi are larger and more complex than bacteria. Yeast is unicellular fungus that thrives in warm, moist environments such as the mouth and vagina. Problems occur when there is an overgrowth of yeast, commonly occurring with pregnancy, use of oral contraceptives, poor nutrition, antibiotic therapy, diabetes, and other immunosuppressed disorders.
