How To Keratin Treatment

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What's a good keratin treatment to loosen your curls and where can I get it for a good price?
I want a keratin treatment that will loosen my curls. And I'm looking for one for a descent price. I heard about some that last for 3 and 5 months.

    • ANSWER:
Jeez Sur la Mer is so behind. No keratin treatment has formaldehyde anymore, don't worry. Yeah some last 3 and some last longer, mine lasted 5 months. I got the cocoa keratin hair smoothing treatment. It came with 2 shampoos (sulfate free ones of course) and a conditioner. Really really good and it's online because its actually a home kit but if its your first time take it to a salon. Make sure they know what they're doing because if it comes out wrong it wasnt applied properly.

  2. QUESTION:
What is the best salon to do the Brazilian keratin treatment in brooklyn?
I want to try a Brazilian keratin treatment, which has become increasingly popular in recent years. Known by several different names, including Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT for short, an acronym you'll often see on various hair forums) and Brazilian straightening treatment, as well as various brand names, this is the newest craze for getting silky straight hair.

    • ANSWER:
I love Brazilian Keratin Treatment. Tried it out of curiosity couple years ago and can't get away from it ever since. Been to so many different places to get it done plus I live in Brooklyn. So you can imagine. Trust me you won't find better place in Brooklyn than Charm Beauty Salon. Check out their website also.

  3. QUESTION:
What happens if you wash out a keratin treatment after 2 days?
I got a keratin treatment done at 10am this morning. I was told to not wash it for 3 days, but I'm going overseas in 2 days and will need to wash my hair before I leave. Will it make a big difference since I'll still be leaving it in for 48 hours? Is it just as a precaution that they say 3 days? I don't want to wash it out and have it not work as it was expensive.

    • ANSWER:
There are so many different types of keratin treatments out these days some which can be washed straight away and others that need 1, 2, or even 3 days for the keratin to penetrate the hair. It is best to follow the instructions you were given by your salon, if you do not follow up with their recommendations you are liable if the hair does not turn out the way it is supposed to.

  4. QUESTION:
How often can you do a keratin treatment?
I had a keratin treatment done in June. I have fine, frizzy hair. It's getting frizzy again. My hair is already in not great condition since I took out my extensions in June but getting slightly better now. Should I get another keratin treatment now or wait a while?

    • ANSWER:

      I do not recommend them.
Hair straighteners are known as hair relaxers, keratin treatments and hair-smoothing products. They work by breaking and reforming the chemical bonds in keratin, which is the main protein that gives shape to each hair.

In Sept. the federal government put out a hazard alert about the hair-smoothing treatment, Brazilian Blowout etc. warning that it contains liquid formaldehyde that can turn into formaldehyde gas when heated during a treatment. Now, the company's bottles of solution carry a warning label to alert stylists to the potential formaldehyde risk and the need to perform the treatment in a well-ventilated area. The manufacturer said Monday (3-6-12) that it had agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit for about .5 million.

Hair-straightening products are allowed to contain small concentrations of formaldehyde (0.2 percent). But several hair-straightening solutions have been found to contain well above the allowable limit. For example, one popular hair-straightening product that advertised itself as “formaldehyde-free” actually contained 6.8 percent to 11.8 percent formaldehyde.
Another example: Fourteen women, including two from North Texas and one from Houston, are suing Unilever, the maker of a product they claim caused permanent damage to their hair.
"It transforms frizzy, unmanageable hair into hair that's sleeker and easier to style," said the commercial for the Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit, which is no longer being sold
When she began looking online for more information about the product, she said she found some people who said it worked, but more who said it damaged their hair.
She discovered a Facebook page devoted to angry consumers, and there are multiple postings on YouTube. I've been warning people about relaxers since 2009 and people are giving me thumbs down!
BTW: A variety of hair-straightening products used in professional salons can expose both hairdressers and their customers to formaldehyde. The results show that three professional hair-smoothing treatments labeled "formaldehyde free" can produce the cancer-causing chemical at concentrations above the occupational exposure limits set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. They tested four products: Coppola Keratin Complex Blonde Formula, Global Keratin Juvexin Optimized Functional Keratin, La Brasiliana Escluso Keratin Treatment with Collagen, and Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Solution. While ChemRisk tested four popular brands of hair straighteners, THERE ARE HUNDREDS on the market. Nov. 11-11

By contrast, beauty salon owners and stylists generally lack a scientific background and don't have a keen awareness of the danger of working with products that contain formaldehyde, experts say.

  8. QUESTION:
What keratin treatment should I use to loosen my curls (preferably one that doesn't cost much).?
I want to get a keratin treatment to loosen my curls. I also wanted to know if I had to keep putting some type of keratin product to help it work. And if there's anything else about the keratin treatments and product I should know about. And how it works.

    • ANSWER:
I got one last year. Its really good! After you get the treatment you have to keep using sulfate free keratin shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair as nice as possible for as long as possible. But that's about it. I got the cocoa keratin treatment, I thought it was really good because it came with its own shampoo and conditioner so I didn't have to go around and look for my own. It lasted for like 5 months or so, and my bff got one herself and hers lasted only 3, lol. She didn't want to get the same brand as I did. You can get the one I had online at beyas. They sell the whole kit or you can just get the bottle of keratin treatment.

  9. QUESTION:
How long does the Brazilian Keratin Treatment last, and what happens to your hair afterwards?
How long does the Brazilian Keratin Treatment last, and what happens to your hair afterwards?
    Thank you for your answers!

    • ANSWER:
I have had the brazilian keratin done three times in a little over a year. I LOVED the first one and immediately announced that I was forever sold on it. I spent 0 on it plus a tip. I went back 5 months later to get a second one from the same person. It was a different brand and was the same amount of money and I didn't like it. The third one I went to ULTA b/c they were having a special on it for 5. This one was the worst. I got it done in Feb and it's May and my hair is FRIED. I have split ends so bad and if they're not split they are bent. Now that I have been reading up on peoples' opinions I am finding more people are not having luck with it. I almost want to wash my hair with a sodium shampoo just to make it come out. It never made my hair straight...what I was looking for was a shorter blow-dry time, silky hair, and for it not to go crazy in the humidity. In all honesty I feel like I got a good month or so of somewhat decent results and for the money it is hardly worth it. I hear people are having better luck with something called La Brazilian (or something like that) I know ULTA used the Coppola on me and I am not sure what my first two were.

      Good luck!!

  16. QUESTION:
What is the difference between a Brazilian Blowout and a Brazilian Keratin Treatment?
I've heard about these treatments before and I've been doing some research. What is the different between a Brazilian Blowout and a Brazilian Keratin Treatment? Which one is better? and What are the prices? thanks everyone!

    • ANSWER:
They are two different brand names within the same category of treatment (keratin-based curl smoothers), BUT--they have different ingredients and different results. Brazilian Blowout is free of all aldehydes and carcinogens, and fades away naturally; Brazilian Keratin contains formalin, which turns into formaldehyde when heated (as is done during the treatment), and could be hazardous to the health of clients and stylists. It may give a straighter look for longer but you will see curly roots as your hair grows in.

      Brazilian Blowout allows the client to see their results on the day of the service, since it is rinsed out and styled in the salon. Brazilian Keratin requires the client to keep the hair ironed straight with the product in it when leaving the salon;
Brazilian Blowout is also the treatment of choice for many celebrities!

I payed for the expensive shampoo and conditioner though, and I have only used a little bit of it. What should I do to keep my hair healthy but return it back to its normal curl??

    • ANSWER:
Shampoo & condition the hair as usual, every 4-7 days, but continue to trim off the damaged hair, allowing new growth to take over. Use GENTLE shampoo. Applying a small drop amount of oil to wet hair can also act as a leave-in conditioner and provides excellent conditioning in preparation for the next shampooing.

Past users of the product have complained of sore throat, skin irritation, headaches, chest pain and rashes, among other symptoms. That may have something to do with the fact that the levels of formaldehyde found in the product rival those typically used in funeral embalming. That’s a lot of formaldehyde.
Reps for the company swear it’s all a misunderstanding. And the product labels itself “no formaldehyde” and “formaldehyde free.” The company has until September 12 to get its affairs in order, or risk having its product seized by the FDA. “We have been tested countless times by OSHA,” the company’s CEO Mike Brady told NPR. “And we have never exceeded a safety standard ever.” Right now, they are fighting with the FDA, but will continue to give what customers want,. Buyer beware!

It is a billion dollar business, and they do not give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss due to 'abuse', in this case, cancer.

  23. QUESTION:
What is the effect of Keratin treatments on curly frizzy hair?
I have curly, frizzy hair and I'd like to try a Keratin treatment to smooth the frizz. However, I don't want to lose my curl or the body. Will the Keratin treatment make my hair straight and limp? Or will I still be able to achieve curly styles?

    • ANSWER:
I wouldn't recommend them. There are many brands of hair straightening out there and they call them anyway they want to get your attention. Coco is another name brand. Some Japanese hair straightening processes can damage the hair and leave it flat and lifeless.
None is better than the other.

Keratin are not approved by the FDA. Visit their website & search for it in their web. If you're thinking about the Brazilian treatment, there's a danger about using formaldehyde, a chemical that causes cancer. The FDA does not restrict the use of that chemical in cosmetics.

Relaxers are for permanent, but they are damaging to hair.

Go to the FDA website & type in permanent or relaxers so you understand what are the side effects.

  27. QUESTION:
What is good shampoo for after keratin treatment?
i just had my keratin treatment, so it has to be sodium chloride free or free sulfates shampoo & i also have a problem with hairloss & also I'd like to shampoo my hair daily. So i need a shampoo that fulfill all my criteria just now, please helppp, thanksss!
it'll be great if the product is vegetarian/vegan
anything in the ingredient that has word 'sodium' in it, i'll not buy...

    • ANSWER:
The best thing after a keratin treatment is to use sodium chloride free shampoo and sulfate free shampoo. Actually, you should be using this kind of shampoo whether or not you had a keratin treatment, as sulfates dry out your hair and cause hair thinning and damage the follicle.
My favorite shampoo to use is Avalon Organics, their products are 70% organic and contain no sulfates or sodium chloride. Burt's Bees is 90% organic, if you want to be extra organic, and both of these brands are safe to use everyday. Hope this helps!

  28. QUESTION:
Should I get a keratin treatment for my hair?
I naturally have extremely straight hair. I got a really bad curled perm in February.. It faded a little bit, but it's still frizzy and wavy. I have to straighten my hair every morning; I hate it! Will getting a keratin treatment revert my hair back to it's natural straight state? I'm scared I will forever have this bad perm.

Also, is it damaging for my hair? And what are the price ranges?

Thanks everyone. I will choose a best answer!

    • ANSWER:
From what I've read you shouldn't get a keratin treatment if your hair is thin or really fragile. Definitely ask a stylist before you get one. I got the same treatment as Andrea. Lasts the longest.

  29. QUESTION:
Is it ok to get a keratin treatment for my vviolet body wave permed hair?
I have had my african american hair done with vviolet body wave for almost 2 years now and need to switch to something cheaper. I know I have to go through a hair journey but was hoping to grow out the body wave. Is it safe to use the keratin treatment with my body wave hair or will this cause my hair to fall out?

    • ANSWER:
Sheesh, the lady above always puts the same answer on every question like this. Anyway, you should ask a stylist who can actually see your hair and evaluate if it's in good condition for a keratin treatment. We can't really say for sure without seeing it for ourselves. Keratin is a natural protein so its way safer for hair than any other hair treatment, and it does wonders if your hair is thick and wavy/curly. The best one I know of is one online called cocoa keratin hair smoothing treatment, lasts for longer and it comes with its own sulfate free shampoo and conditioner.

Chemicals can enter the body through the skin.

I just got the Brazilian Keratin Treatment done. Any suggestions for a good shampoo/conditioner brand?
I just got the Brazilian Keratin Treatment done. I'm seeking suggestions for good shampoo & conditioner brands. They should contain keratin and MUST be sodium chloride and sulfate free.

Those products you must mentioned? It's a new form to trying to get people's attention, "a marketing gimmick." The hair industry is a billion dollar business. . Example: Green tea is the new trend and it is healthier for you, or buying coffee at Starbuck's, they taste sweeter. More profits for them. BK's green tea had been recalled, or the eggs, is that mean people won't be buying green tea or eggs anymore? The hair industry wants your attention, but they don't give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss.

It would be boring if they just call it shampoo! Google shampoo, it's meant to clean. They want a variety of product, to attract a variety of hair textures/condition/smell.

There are sulfates in many of the everyday products we use at home! Sulfates on shampoo doesn't cause cancer. But Google hair dyes & cancer. How about ProActive. ProActiv contains a known carcinogen, at a percentage known to promote skin cancer. Many customers and stylists do not know that Brazilian treatment often contains high concentrations of formaldehyde, a cancer-causing chemical.

When you wash your hair with one of those nutrient-rich shampoos, most of the nutrients and active ingredients in the product don’t actually end up in your hair, they wind up down the drain… along with all the money you spent on the shampoo. It is HOW you use to style your hair or what styling tools that damage the hair, and what chemicals you're adding to the hair, not the shampoo.

I wouldn't HAVE recommend them. There are many brands of hair straightening out there and they call them anyway they want to get your attention. Coco is another name brand. Some Japanese hair straightening processes can damage the hair and leave it flat and lifeless.

  33. QUESTION:
Should I do a keratin treatment at a salon and will be paid for before and after photos?
They will pay me to do this keratin treatment and for before and after photos. I am afraid of the dangers involved in keratin treatment, I have never done anything to my hair except color it at home.

    • ANSWER:
There are loads of hair treatments out there that aren't safe. Make sure you use the right sort of treatment. Some of them have a lot of chemicals that can be pretty harsh on your hair and body but there are definitely some good ones out there.

Products like http://www.keraplast.com/news/keraplast-hair-rescue-debuts-at-cosmoprof/ are made to be as close as possible to the Keratin that your body naturally produces which is what you want and it can do great things for your hair. It's a new treatment called Hair Rescue which uses Replicine Functional Keratin and is only available in some American salons at the moment. If you are worried about the dangers with some treatments you are right, make sure you ask your salon to stock this new Hair Rescue one and you'll be safe :)

  34. QUESTION:
Does mousse/hairspray affect hair that has been treated by the Keratin treatment?
I had the Brazilian Keratin Treatment & I'd like to know if putting mousse or hairspray in my hair would affect how long the treatment lasts.

    • ANSWER:
It's doubtful, but the washing/clarifying required afterward to get it out afterward could lift some of the keratin treatment faster. However, keratin is a hair's natural structure so putting mousse or hairspray in the hair shouldn't do anything untoward to the treatment.

What is the difference between Keratin treatment, PPT treatment, and LPP treatment ?
What is the difference between Keratin treatment, PPT treatment, and LPP treatment ???

And when should you use which one on your damaged hair???

    • ANSWER:
When hair is damaged, no hair product can reverse the damaged done to the hair.

Cutting the hair is THE ONLY way the hair will become better. Good hair care, means no chemicals, no other hair products.

IT IS by the way, a billion dollar business. They do not give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss caused by 'abuse'.

The difference? They are all money making gimmicks, making promises, but even hair salons make mistakes on their hair NO MATTER which treatment they used, and have been sued for causing people hair loss.

I'm not a beautician. I have no knowledge of the many 'treatment' they used.

  37. QUESTION:
A few years after the brazilian keratin treatment. How has it been working out for you?
I've heard that some people suffered from hair-loss and dry, brittle hair after using it for a few years. I've been using it for almost 2 years and my hair looks lovely! So what's your experience with the brazilian keratin treatment? And do you think it could harm my hair on the long run? I use the chemical free treatment.

    • ANSWER:
Yes it is amazing! I had really poofy, frizzy, curly hair and I got the treatment last year. Now all I have to do is blow dry my hair for 2 min with a round brush, and its perfectly straight and shiny! It's great :)
& all "Keratin" is is protein. So it shouldn't harm your hair(mine is doing great, no split ends or anything) But if it has "Formaldehyde" in it then DON'T use it anymore!
I have the organic Keratin, and it works just as good(& maybe even better?)

  38. QUESTION:
Will a keratin treatment repair my bleach damaged hair?
About 12 weeks ago, I had my hair chemically lightened with bleach and then colored with semi-permanent color. Thinking that a keratin treatment would prevent extra breakage and help the health of my hair following the color, I had that done about a week or two later. The exact opposite effect ensued. Now my hair is shrunken and barely manageable, looks like a ball of yarn. Since then, I've been deep conditioning weekly and even cracked two eggs in it, to no avail.

    • ANSWER:
Do a hydrating treatment once a week with coconut oil, almond oil or argan oil to moisturize your hair and make it healthy. Leave in the oil in with a shower cap over your head for about 30 minutes to 1 hour to let your hair absorb it. Sometimes it’s good to leave it overnight for extra moisture. I use an argan oil hair mask from pro naturals for repairing and moisturizing and it leaves my hair so soft and healthy, I totally recommend it. Get trims every 2-3 months too, it’ll help get rid of damaged hair and split ends.

Thoughts about an at home keratin treatment?
I recently bought the Organix 30 day brazilian keratin treatment? I really need some feedback if anyone has used it because I am a little bit nervous to try it. The directions look a tad difficult. Is this going to dry out my hair? HELP!

    • ANSWER:
      Hey there!
I just did this treatment a couple days ago and i am OBSESSED with how my hair looks. I have kinda wavy hair that's been majorly damaged by frequent bleaching and dying and even an attempted hair relaxing at home. Theres a reason those kits are made for African american hair, it FRIED mine. This treatment smoothed out my hair, softened it, and its also alot less oily so instead of washing it every other day i can wash it ever two days.
I recommend it like no other :)

I want to do a brazilian keratin treatment, but am not going to pay 0 for someone in a salon to do what I am perfectly capable of doing myself. Problem is I don't know which one to buy, and where to buy it since most are for "professionals only" I have SUPER thick SUPER curly frizzy crappy hair, so I need the good stuff.

What is the best treatment, and where can I buy it?

(I know it is terrible for your health, but my hair is so bad I would do anything to make it look even remotely normal for once in my life. Skip the lectures please)
Thanks for the info! I know it won't make my hair straight or anything, I usually straighten it so if it helps that even be a little faster or make it a tad smother I'd be ok with that... especially with summer coming up, I usually have to put in in a bun to keep it from going crazy from the humidity (live at the beach in NC, 100% humidity!)

I have relaxed hair but started using keratin shampoo and conditioner on my hair. However, I have not had the actual keratin treatment done on my hair. Should I still use the keratin shampoo and conditioner?

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
      Hi

There is no harm in using Keratin Shampoos and Conditioners even if you have not gone for the keratin hair treatment. As keratin shampoos are based on keratin it is very good and healthy for the hair. It will make your hair strong and shiny.

You can try Global Keratin's Juvexin based shampoos and conditioners. Juvexin is a unique organic and active keratin that unlike over processed hydrolyzed keratin has a structure very close to the hair keratin that binds and coats the hair. It protects it from damages, maintaining and enhancing the shine and softness of the hair after every wash. It works on all hair types and leaves hair more manageable, soft, and shiny. I've tried it although my hair is virgin just to keep it healthy.

      Thanks
      Raji

  48. QUESTION:
how can I perform chemical hair relaxing and keratin treatment in the same time?
I know for a fact that if the hair is virgin and very coarse, I need to chemically relax it first before I use the brazilian Keratin treatment. Can any body tell me how to do it step by step? especially that a neutralizing shampoo is neede for chemical hair relaxing, while clarifying shampoo is needed for the keratin treatment.

    • ANSWER:
You don't need to relax your hair before the keratin treatment. I've had it done twice on my hair, and I have never relaxed my hair. I LOVE the treatment. I am getting it done again in December. I have very course curly hair so the treatment lasts for 4 months. I would suggest getting it done by a professional since the keratin treatment uses formaldahyde (hope I spelled it right). And also you can dye your hair before doing the treatment. And the treatment is safe if you already have relexed your hair.

But here are the steps. Wash hair with a shampoo that does not contain sulfate (u can use the brand at stores now by Loreal called everpure). Let your hair air dry slightly then blow dry. Next part hair in 4 sections and pin. Then part hair row by row as you do this.
Take the keratin treatment chemical and dampen hair from the roots to the ends and run the flat iron over your hair at LEAST 10 times. So your going to be taking each row as you part it and flat ironing it with the keratin treatment chemical on it. By the time you get done flat ironing it it should be straight and dry. Do this until you have finished all 4 sections. Then you are done. It will take time if you want your hair extremely straight, smooth, and shiny. Depending on your type of hair the treatment can last from 4months-6months. Let me know if you need to see my before and after pictures also.

**Only wash and condition your hair with sulfate free shampoo and conditioners.**

  49. QUESTION:
How long should I leave my Keratin treatment in?
I got a Keratin treatment done Thursday night. is it okay to wash my hair now or should I wait until tomorrow night? at this point, would it really make a difference??

    • ANSWER:
It really shouldn't make a difference now. Did you know that you can buy keratin treatments over the counter at Sallys? I've even seen them at Walmart. If you are worried about not keeping the results, I would invest in some products. :)

  50. QUESTION:
can i use aphogee 2 min keratin as a brazilian keratin treatment?
I want to do the keratin treatment to make my hair straight and was wondering if the aphogee keratin 2 min reconstructer would work as liquid keratin?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Aphogee's 2 min reconstructor is only used as a light protein treatment for damaged hair. So, no it cannot be used to straighten ur hair. The BKT treatment contains an ingredient called formaldehyde that temporarily straightens the hair. I hear that Global keratin treatment by Marcia Teixeria was really good. You can have a professional apply it for you, but it is costly. There are some ladies on hair boards like lomhaircareforum or blackhairmedia that have did lots of research and applied it themselves. Depending on the area u live in, some many sell the treatment in stores. Hope this helps u.
