Natural Remedies For Ear Infections

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Who honestly knows If vinegar and water works for chronic ear infections in dogs?
Has anyone tried it? Is it effective? or is there any other natural remedies for ear infections in dogs. no antibiotics.

    • ANSWER:
Ineffective. This summer alone, I've already treated over 50 ear infections. Tis the season, is our motto. Ear infections, skin infections, in high numbers usually due to more water exposure, humidity, trapped moisture, and allergens.

Your vet treatment team and your dog would really appreciate if you don't try vinegar and water at home, it fails, then you have a stinky dog, with infected ears, at the clinic, in desperate need of a topical antifungal/antibioitic/anti-inflammatory med. Normal flora on the skin's surface should not be in ear canals. When yeast and bacteria infect the ear canal, usually it's due to water in the ear compromising the balance of yeast/bacteria populations or the dog started scratching due to allergies and got a secondary infection after breaking the skin and compromising the skin barrier, allowing bacteria and yeast to affect multiple skin layers in the ear.

Antibiotics and antifungals help the ear go back to normal state with only bacteria and yeast living on the exterior of the body. Ensuring it's being shaken before use, enough med is being administered into the ear canals, then massaging at the base of the ear, are all important to ensure the med is effective.

For maintenance, cleansing the ears with a cerulytic (breaks up wax/debris) cleanser with a drying agent can help prevent ear infections with weekly use and whenever exposed to water, not to exceed every 2-3 days. If a dog swims daily, cleansing their ears every 3 days will reduce their risk for ear infections.

And definitely don't immerse a dog in vinegar, diluted or not. They are so hypersensitive to odor and it does not benefit skin that is already symptomatic for infection, sebhorrea, itchiness, or fleas.

Meds such as Mometamax, Easotic, Genotic/Betagen/other gentamicin based meds, or Posatex are effective against yeast and bacteria, and may be prescribed by your vet. You cannot avoid Rx med if your dog has an ear infection. He will continue to have inflamed ears, with trapped moisture, excess debris, itchiness, and possibly develop internal ear damage and destruction if left untreated. Do not take it too lightly! Hope you're just randomly asking about vinegar, and you don't have a dog with an ear infection...

  2. QUESTION:
Anyone know of a natural ear infection remedy for dogs?
My Basset Hound has had a couple ear infecions caused by yeast and she has another one now. In the past she has used prescription Mometamax. Is there a natural remedy that will treat and cure the infection? I want to avoid taking her to the vet again if at all possible.
I dont need smart assed answers please, I know what my dog has, I know that Basset Hounds are susceptible to ear infections, I take care of her and Im a big believer in natural cures. If you cant answer my question with a logical, polite answer dont answer at all.
THANKS in advance for your help!

    • ANSWER:
My bulldog Bulldozer used to get sore ears and they smelled like cheese. So my vet said to try vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Fifty percent of each or half and half.
The vinegar breaks down the gunk and the alcohol dries up water from say a bath. I used it after every bath and some times in between. Do not use it more than once a week. Too much drying can be painful. Also the smell of funky ears can draw flies that will bite and aggravate you puppy.

Best to do this outside and only if your dog really trusts you. I had someone else pour in the medicine I would hold him still and hold his ear open. Then we would filler up. Flop his ears closed and massage the sides of his head and then let him go. This is the gross part he would shake his head and any thing loosened up would come out. Every thing would fly out. So we did this outside and in not our best clothes. With a floppy eared dog you will need to wipe away the excess after he shakes his head. Towel drying his head if he goes out in the rain or sprinkler etc is also a good idea. They don’t sweat but their skin and ears produces oil like ours.

Do not use this solution if your dog has open sores the vinegar and the alcohol will sting.

You could get bit or he may never let you touch his / her head again.

Never never ever use hydrogen peroxide. The foaming action causes pressure and can damage their ears permanently.

  3. QUESTION:
I need a natural cure inner ear infection due to a cold?
I have had a head cold for a week now. This has now lead to an inner ear infection.

I have been on antibiotics for 3 days, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Does anyone have any natural remedies they can share? I am in agony!!

    • ANSWER:
      Natural Cure

Like 90% of common colds are VIRAL.
Thus, 10% of common colds are BACTERIAL.

By taking antibiotics for the common cold, chances are that you are just degrading your immune system.

Instead of seeing your doctor you should have given attention to:

#1 your sleep habits [rejuvinate your body]
      #2 hygiene habits [hand-washing]
      #3 your nutrition habits.
#4 your hydration habits [flush out impurities].
#5 how you handle mental stress [stress lowers the immune system]
#6 how you handle environmental stress (it is stress on the body to go from a real warm place to a real cold place.

Now that you've caught the viral bug, get a lot of rest, drink a lot of water, eat healthy, stay out of the cold and if you wish, go to your local pharmacy and purchase an over-the-counter cough suppresant. It is my guess that when your cold symptoms run their coarse, your ear will stop hurting.

      Hope this helps you.

  6. QUESTION:
How do you get rid of an ear infection that stemmed from a cold or flu that is muting my hearing?
I've have had an awful cold or flu for weeks now and now I have an ear infection in both ears with some discharge (at times dark). It has both of my ears plugged up.Besides a doctor or antibiotics, any self treatment or natural remedy suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, there are over the counter things you can use to drain your nose and dry up your ears. Any one of them that says it will relieve nasal stuffiness will do the trick, although it will likely take a day or so for you to notice a big change. Sudafed is one drug to consider, but there are others, just ask the pharmacist. The eustachian tubes connect the ears with the rear of the throat, and allow the ear to adjust pressure to match the outside air. When the nose is stuffed, and you have a lot of mucous, some of it can block those tubes. Draining it helps the ears clear. You can also help it along by trying to clear the tubes yourself, along with the medicine. Hold your nose, close your mouth, and gently blow. You will probably not feel a lot at first, or it may hurt a bit, if so stop. Repeat that several times through the day, and eventually you should feel an eardrum slowly start to feel like it's moving, and perhaps even feel your ears "pop". When you feel the movement in the eardrum, it means the tube is clearing, but not quite clear. A drum that will actually pop means it is now all clear. If this doesn't help, along with the medicine, within a few days, then you likely need to have the doctor have a look.

    • ANSWER:
Go to the emergency room and they will give you some antibiotics that's the only thing I know that will cure it..or go to the drugstore and get some of those ear droplets to clean out your ear and then take some tylenol for the pain.

  8. QUESTION:
What is the best natural remedy for ear infections in children?
My 3 year old son has his second ear infection, we went to the gp and he took amoxycillin. It seemed to clear up, only to return again but much worse this time. His ear is oozing and is a little red. He has no temperature now and seems to be recovering but the ear is still bad.

    • ANSWER:
This may sound strange to some, but if you have access to breast milk, it is one of the best remedies for ear aches and infections. I have used it many times on many different people and it works quickly and very well. I know a little boy who was on antibiotics, had a similar experience as you describe. His mom put breastmilk in his a ear, and after a few times, it was completely fine.
It also works for conjunctivitis, and skin infections.
If you don't have access to any, you could research an herb called Spilanthes. It is a super immune booster, an anti-viral, anti-fungal, and good for reoccuring ear infections.
Also, I use garlic mullein oil, warmed, with a few drops in the ear. I am an herbalist and make my own, but one can buy it in most natural food stores.
Also, you may want to give your son pro-biotics since he has been taking anti-biotics. This will promote healthy growth of intestinal flora, and prevent digestive and other health problems associated with anti-biotic use.

  12. QUESTION:
Natural Remedies to help with a Fungal Infection to the ears of a dog?
My Rottweiler has a Fungal Infection in her ear and is starting to get it in her other. Is there any natural Remedies to help treat and cure this??
Any info as to why she got this in the first place?

    • ANSWER:
Don't know if you'd call this "natural" but it sure does work:

      BLUE POWER EAR SOLUTION

      INGREDIENTS:
      16 Oz. Isopropyl Alcohol
      4 Tablespoons Boric Acid Powder
16 Drops Gentian Violet Solution 1%

Mix together in alcohol bottle and shake well.
You will also need to shake solution every time you use it to disperse the Boric Acid Powder.

TREATMENT: Evaluate condition of ears before treating and if very inflamed and sore do not attempt to pull hair or clean out ear at all.

Wait until inflammation has subsided which will be about 2 days.
Shake the bottle each time before using.
Put cotton balls or similiar absorbent material under the ear.
Flood the ear with solution, (gently squirt bottle), massage gently to the count of 60, wipe with a tissue.
Flood again on first treatment, wipe with a tissue, and leave alone without massage.

The dog will shake out the excess which can be wiped with a tissue, cotton ball, etc as the Gentian Violet does stain fabrics.

The SCHEDULE of treatment is as follows:
Treat 2x per day for the first week to two weeks depending upon severity of ears
Treat 1x per day for the next 1-2 weeks
Treat 1x per month (or even less frequently, depending on the dog)

All of these ingredients should be available at a pharmacy.
The Boric Acid Powder soothes the ear.
The Gentian Violet Solution is an anti-infection agent.
The solution appears to work well on any and all ear problems from mites to wax to canker.

After the 2nd or 3rd day you can clean out the ear with a Q-tip or cotton balls.

The success rate for this treatment is 95-99%.

If an infection seems to be remaining in the treated ear after the above course of treatment, you may also have some Pseudomonas bacteria in the site.

This can be eradicated by using a gentle flush of raw apple cider vinegar and wateR(warm)

Use 2 Tablespoons of vinegar to one cup of water, 2 x per week.

They have found the Blue Powder Solution to be effective for treating fungus-type infections on the feet and elsewhere on the dog, for cuts on dogs or people, and for hot spots.

Remember it is for external use only ..so be careful not to get into the eyes.

Do some research on colloidal silver, it was used for infections in the early 19th century with great success but than penicillin came about and it was all but forgotten. Now that the modern antibiotics are getting ineffective colloid silver is making a come back.

Hundreds of studies conducted over the past 90 years at top medical universities in both Europe and America have confirmed the phenomenal infection fighting powers of colloidal silver, an all natural antibiotic substance. Colloidal silver ions kill many of the deadly infectious microorganisms that no longer respond to prescription antibiotic drugs. In fact colloidal silver has been demonstrated to kill over 650 different disease-causing pathogens.

You can buy colloidal silver at health food stores or make it yourself.

It appears to me that your allergies have turned into a chronic sinus infection because your ears are always clogged up.

Abnormal mucus production within the eustachian tubes and the mucosal lining near the openings of the eustachian tubes are causing the problems you are facing.

  22. QUESTION:
Any suggestions for coping with asthma in 5 year old?
My daughter has asthma. It comes on when she has a cold or an ear or throat infection. I had to give her a liquid steroid last night as she had asthma really badly, the trouble is the steroid makes her so hyper-active, jumping off lounges and running around etc. It drives me crazy because she really needs to rest. I have seen specialists and this is what they all prescribe. She has no dairy or peanuts in her diet because she is allergic to them. What sort of medications do you give your asthmatic child? Are there any new developments I'm not aware of? She also has a daily preventer puffer that has made the attacks less frequent. I would really like some natural remedies if there is any, or diet tips. I hate giving her all these steroidal drugs. Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Thank you to everyone for your answers, the info is really helpful.

    • ANSWER:
There is a once a day pill here in the US called Singulair.(Montelukast sodium) It is not a steroid and it helps with allergies and asthma. It is available in a chewable for children over 2 years old. My children and grandson take it. You must be faithful to take it daily but it really reduces the breakthrough of symptoms. Colds and allergy triggers can be a problem for asthmatics. In those cases you should have a nebulizer machine at home. The abuterol you get in the puffer can be administered at home through this machine. It is a lifesaver. Just know there will be times the only thing that will help is the steroid. You should also keep track of her pulmonary function with a small device she blows into. It can warn of trouble ahead. Talk to your GP. they should be able to get all these things for you. Be aggressive with this disease as waiting can make things worse. Hope this helps. Good luck

  26. QUESTION:
Does somebody can tell me if I could read a kidney-bladder infection fasting?
I started with a bladder infection and then with a kidney infection. I've been taking natural remedies because I don't like traditional medicine. Could somebody with fasting or naturopathy knowdlege help me? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I know you are looking for a person with certain knowledge to help you. I just want to say that you should consider that the infection is spreading. There are some good things available through mother nature, but consider the amount of time you have before you do damage to the kidney. I doubt you will get a solution that will act quickly enough without going with traditional medicines. If this is a religious decision or some deep rooted belief than while I understand, I caution too. There was a family in the news a few years back who were letting their son die of an ear infection. It was against their religion to give the child antibiotics. They lost several children to this basic childhood infection. I won't give you my opinion on that family, or the decisions those parents made for their kids only because once i get started I'm sure I won't shut up. I had terrible infections in my ears as a child as did my son in his younger years. Thank Goddess my views and my mom's views were not so deadly.
My point is this: while I am a firm believer in going natural when you can, not all things (especially in this age where infections, diseases and such are so strong and increasingly so) can be dealt with in that way. I'm a pagan woman who uses home remedies and natural options whenever possible, but not at the risk of serious damage or death. Please, stand strong behind your beliefs but stand strong behind the health of your body. You only get one for this trip.
      Good luck and good health.

  27. QUESTION:
What is best natural remedy for yeast ear infection appearing in the dogs, cats & other pets ear ?
I have found Ear Oil medication remedy at http://drdogs247.Com anyone has used it before ???

    • ANSWER:
You can use oils and they do help a lot. Swab and clean the ears and keep them very dry. Yeast thrives on sugar and can indicate animals (or humans) with high levels of sugar. Diet changes can make a big impact on preventing yeast infections. Low carb diets and those with acidophilus (found in yogurt) can be quite helpful. Commercial dog foods are very high in corn and corn is extremely high in sugars. Look for a food where meat is the first ingredient. The oil you mention should work well for now. You might consider altering the diet for further prevention.

She gave me anti-biotics and told me it should go away in 2 days but im just wondering if you have expirenced it does it take 2 days ? Also there is clear liquid with a little tiny blood coming out of my ear and i don't know how to stop it, it doesnt hurt but its annoying.

    Thnx !

    • ANSWER:
With antibiotics the pain goes away quicker than the symptoms.
However antibiotics helps if the ear infection is caused by bacterial infection. But it could also be viral infection in which case this medication doesn't help. If you have had pain and is gone then it might have been bacterial infection. The lucky were you.
For my own kids I get the expert opinion but try to use natural ways to treat it and leave the antibiotics for more serious cases.
I use this webpage, please look at it but also share it with your parents so as they can provide you with natural and home remedies.

  29. QUESTION:
Is it safe to give a 6 month old bubs antibiotics for an ear infection?
My bubs is 8 and a half months old, she had an ear infection at 6 months and the dr gave me antibiotics which I gave to her but I can't help feeling bad about it - not sure why! I think I just wanted a bit of reassurance that this is ok. Also I am stopping breastfeeding shortly due to my medical condition and and wandered will she become more prone to infections?

    • ANSWER:
      Hello Mercedes,
Don't worry, the antibiotics were probably necessary, good doctors don't prescribe them when they are not necessary. I have treated more than a 1000 ear infections most of the time with home remedies, but sometimes antibiotics were necessary. They don't undermine the immune system, they help the immune system. The only common side effect(besides allergies) is diarrhea caused by disturbance of natural intestinal flora, but you can treat or prevent that with yogurt or something else containing "probiotics".
After 6 months the amount of antibodies in breast milk is low, but the baby can do the job of fighting infections her or himself easily most of the time.

  30. QUESTION:
How to avoid future ear infections?
I currently have a very painful ear infection in my right ear and I would really rather never have to go through it again. Are there any possible ways to help avoid future ear infections? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Cutting out dairy foods from your diet would help. I recall having ear aches when I was a child, but it has been fifty years ago. Back then I drank a lot of milk and ate cheese, now I don't.

One key to avoiding ear infections is to avoid the colds and sinus problems that often lead to ear infections. There, again, I have found that avoiding dairy foods, getting plenty of sleep, not hanging around smokers, and getting plenty of exercise helps one stay well.

Dr. Mercola offers a wonderful, inexpensive home remedy in the link below: Crush some fresh garlic and soak it in olive oil for a while, then drop a few drops in the aching ear.

Garlic is a natural antibiotic, in case you were wondering.

  31. QUESTION:
How to cure atopic dermatitis and yeast infections in dogs?
I have a small shichi (Shih-Tzu and chihuahua mix). I have taken her to countless vets and found out she has atopic dermatitis and a severe case of yeast infection inside and on her body. She is on antibiotics and Benadryl for dogs but doesn't seem to be getting any better. I've tried using yogurt, apple cider vinegar, and colloidal silver remedies but nothing seems to work. I really would love some ideas of what else I could do for her. Preferably natural remedies. I hate seeing my baby itch like crazy. :(
I have tried to change her food up by giving her just hamburger for awhile but nothing changed. But I would def be willing to try again to see if it would help. No, I haven't tried the coal tar shampoo. She has some open sores on her body from itching so much. Would that hurt her and would it help take the yeast away? I have some medicated shampoo from the vet to take the yeast away but it can be so harsh that her paws bleed when I give her a bath which I really dislike. Her vet says she's a poster child for skin problems. :(

    • ANSWER:
my last dog had severe environmental and food allergies resulting in excessive scratching, traumatizing the skin, and yeast infections ... NOTHING the vet told me helped, not even the doggie allergy specialist i spent tons on to see, none helped my dog ... i finally switched her to a grain-free limited ingredient diet (natural balance, the salmon one) and started adding raw organic apple cider vinegar to her kibble every morning ... she stopped itching and messing with her skin and she never had another yeast infection (skin or ear) for the rest of her life ...

  32. QUESTION:
What is a natural way to cure an ear ache/infection?
I've been trying to "unplug" my ear and nothing is working. The longer it stays plugged the more it hurts, making me think I have the start of an infection, but no fever. I've tried peroxide drops and warm water flushes and very little comes out. It's happened before and I had to go see the urgent care clinic who flushed it with a very long syringe several several times and got some out but they said to continue using drops and flushing it to get the rest out. Well the rest never came out. I tried going up and over a mtn pass too and back again but the pressure didn't cause it to pop yet

Are there any at home type remedies for unplugging my ear or possible an ear infection.

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
I tried heat and garlic pills and a bulb syringe flushing out of my ear. I ended up with a severe ear infection that laid me out for four days. I am all about some natural remedies, but sometimes you HAVE TO GO TO THE DOCTOR AND GET AN ANTIBIOTIC!!! You could get seriously ill if the bacteria gets into your brain. Good luck!!!

You could try tea tree oil applied topically. Get a high quality therapeutic grade and lightly mix it with a carrier oil such as grapeseed. You can find it at vitamin shops or health food stores.

  36. QUESTION:
How to stop an ear infection?
I think i'm getting an ear infection. I was sick last week and i'm pretty much over it. My ears feel stuffy and kind of hurt. How can i prevent the ear infection from actually happening?

    • ANSWER:
Hydrogen Peroxide. You put a capful into each ear and let it sit for awhile. You'll hear bubbling and fizzing as the Peroxide eats away at the junk in your ears. After it stops, let it drain and repeat until there is no more fizzing and bubbling. Do this 2 times a day. Hydrogen Peroxide is a natural antibiotic and is not harmful for your ears. If however this doesn't work, you should see your doctor. But it's been proven to work. Google it.

  37. QUESTION:
My ear hurts for three days now and is clogged. Have you had this?
I called the nurse and she said take decongestant. I can hear out of it, but something is trapped in there, either air or fluid. Its painful. I have to keep taking pain meds. I hate taking time off from work to see the doctor. the muffled sound doesn't bother me, just the pain that comes and goes. And I asked about infection. Any natural remedies? Its very tender.

    • ANSWER:
That's an ear infection. My mom and I both had that (not at the same time). Our doctor gave us antibiotic drops. You have to tilt your head and put drops in your ear few times a day. At first, it felt worse because the pressure of the drop hurt my whole head. After a few days, it was working and the swelling inside the ear went away.

Get it checked by a doctor and ask for prescription.

  38. QUESTION:
What natural remedies are there for a sinus infection?
I've been taking an antibiotic for a sinus infection, and though I am feeling better, the symptoms are still bugging me. I want to try something else to add to it.

    • ANSWER:
A warm salt-water solution poured through the nose provides great relief in sinusitis. A ceramic pot (a plastic one may also be used, it is far easier to carry) known as a “neti lota”, makes this procedure very easy. Fill the pot with warm water and add enough salt so the solution tastes like tears. Stand over a sink and tilt your head far to one side so that your ear is parallel to the floor, and pour the solution into the upper nostril, allowing it to drain through the lower nostril. You have to breathe through your mouth while doing this. Gently blow your nose using your gut muscles without applying pressure on your lungs as this may throw the mucus along with the bacteria back into your throat and the Eustachian tubes. Repeat on the other side. This procedure may be performed two or three times a day. It is a part of the yogic therapy and is extremely beneficial in sinusitis.

Yoga (neti pot use is actually a part of it) is extremely beneficial, especially when you use herbs along with it.

Usually, your sinusitis will require the use of antibiotics (I have myself taken tons of them) to get rid of bacteria and other organisms. Natural and holistic treatments have also been used for centuries to reduce the symptoms of sinusitis. Very often, conventional medications have harsh side effects and using more natural alternatives like herbal and homeopathic remedies are much safer and gentler for the body.

Herbal remedies are there to alleviate the symptoms by reducing inflammation and, if you still take prescription medications, also help them in curing the infection. Of course, some of them like Echinacea, help tremendously in not only giving a fillip to your immune system but also help prevent colds and shorten the duration of your cold or flu.

A highly effective herb is Quercitin which contains anti-oxidants and helps to promote healthy circulation and boosts immunity. Another carefully selected herb is Euphrasia officinalis (Eyebright) which is beneficial for good eye health. In addition, homeopathic ingredients such as Arsen alb, Nat. mur. and Kali mur. help to maintain the skin and nervous system as well as liver health.

Does anyone have any natural remedies that can help me?
Oh, and some alternative antibiotics would be good too.
    Thanks guys.

    • ANSWER:
Garlic oil. You can make your own very easily, by dicing up a clove of garlic and adding oil. I use olive oil. Im not sure if there is another oil that you can use. Im sure there are some recipies online.
Anyway dice the clove of garlic and cover with oil. Heat in a pan for a few minutes and then strain ( you need to have a very fine mesh strainer so as not to get pieces of the garlic into the oil.
Cool completly and then drop into ears with dropper. Do one side at a time. Leaving oil in about 15-20 minutes on each side. Take a towl and let each ear drain onto it and wipe clean. repeat up to 4 times during the day. Also, Garlic is a natural antibiotic. Get some garlic tablets as they are much more concentrated then the amount of garlic then you can eat.
I buy my garlic at the GNC store as it is the strongest Ive been able to find. It is called garlic 1000
you can also buy garlic 500 too. it just means that one is 1000 mg of garlic and one is 500 mg.
Garlic is a natural antibiotic, I never go without garlic on my remedies shelf. Good for Colds, flu & urinary tract infections. The garlic oil should only be made as needed. Throw out after 4-5 days and make a fresh batch.

  42. QUESTION:
Do you know of a natural remedy for child's ear infection?
My 8-year-old son has an ear infection and a fever of 101. He complains of earache about once or twice a year and I have always just given him Tylenol for the pain and the problem just clears up on its own, but he starts to cry from the pain after two or three hours and the Tylenol directions say to give it no more that once every 4 hours. I feel so bad when he's in pain. I wish I could just make the pain go away. His doctor prescribed an antibiotic, but I would rather try something natural if it works just as well.

    • ANSWER:
Several things: I use mullein/garlic/warmed olive oil for earaches. Usually this works very, very well. You can buy ear oil or mullein/garlic/olive oil ready made, or you can make your own. E-mail me for directions on how to make your own if you like. It's super easy. Some families have excellent luck with adding ear candling. Some are highly sceptical and do not even want to try this modality. I ABSOLUTELY agree that recurrent ear infections are usually a sign of dairy or wheat allergy, and I did know one little boy who was allergic to apple juice, that staff of life for kids, so don't rule this out! I urge you not to go the allopathic antibiotic route, as this will indiscriminately kill all the bacteria in your child's gut, both bad AND good. And this can cause dysbiosis which will further imbalance him and can take years to rectify. Eliminate dairy, especially full fat dairy. Some kids eat bagels w/ cream cheese, cereal w/ milk, milk and pizza for lunch w/ ice cream for dessert, and even more meat and full fat dairy for dinner (as in enchiladas and lasagne and more pizza and burgers for dinner). If these are some of his biggest sources of calories, go to cultured dairy like kefir and yogurt. Quit the sugars as this feeds the bacteria and acidifies the blood and makes it worse.

I've had luck w/ giving kids "green water" to drink. Go to the healthfood store and buy either liquid alfalfa or Kyo-green by Wakunaga and follow the package directions, halving the dose for young children. You may also find that by adding lots of warming spices to your child's food, like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, mace, allspice, a bit of cayenne if he'll take it (and for some kids, that's a big if...), chai w/ soymilk, that this helps break up mucous in his body and gets rid of the cause of the ear infections once and for all. As we're coming into the autumn soon, give him things like oatmeal w/ cinnamon and raisins or nuts (if he likes and can have those things), mulled cider, spiced, warmed pear juice if indeed he seems sensitive to the apple products, warmed spiced pear sauce w/ granola for dessert, sweet potatoes or yams w/ garlic and a bit of curry as a side dish, etc. etc. Give him tons of greens and veggies in his diet w/ lots of garlic. My kids eat something green every single day of their lives. Mom insists. I make a curried tuna salad and a curried chicken salad to get lean protein and a bit of those warming spices into my children, but this is not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, especially kids.

In hydrotherapy, alternate applications of hot and cold compresses would be given to get things moving and to break up the pain. You may want to try a hot water bottle or a heating pad, however. We have a little pad that has magnets in it and can be heated up in the microwave. This helps immensely. I also use that same warmed mullein garlic oil to massage around the ear, especially behind it and down to try to get the lymph moving and the Eustacian tubes to drain.

I have used tea tree oil directly into the painful ear w/ good results. It's better to warm it up a bit first, as cold oils can increase the pain and hurt very much.

Have you considered homeopathic remedies? I have used them since my children were infants w/ excellent results. Soul Doctor and Amembal on this site are excellent resources. I've used Belladonna in cases of intense left sided pain w/ a red cheek or ear and Aconite for intense, sudden, sometimes heated onset (of any illness, not just earaches) all with EXCELLENT results and no side effects. I state before you now that I believe Aconite and Belladonna saved my infant daughter's life when she contracted the meningococcemia (bacterial meningitis) that almost killed her at 12 1/2 months. You can consult Homeopathic Medicine at Home by Panos & Heimlich or Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicine by Dana Ullman to get yourself started. You can also buy a small children's kit w/ 6 remedies (6 of the most commonly used), to get yourself started on this path.

Let us know if there's anything else you'd like to know, have questions with or need help with! Good luck!

  43. QUESTION:
What is a natural remedy for ear mites?
My dog has ear mites. I know most people would say to take him to the vet, but all the vet does is gives him an antibiotic, which isn't good for him. Just like it isn't good to give a person antibiotics all the time. I know there are homemade remedies, but which ones work the best and are safe? 44. QUESTION:
My american eskimo has been vomiting white foam for about a year. Is that normal? Anyone have any advice?
She had had rashes on her skin for about 60% of this year. She also has been prone to ear infections. The vet made me buy non-allergenic dog food, but it didn't help. She's gone to the vet numerous times and I've spent so much money on her. I have no answers or remedies. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Did your vet give you any allergy medicine for her skin? What sort of medicine did you give her for the ear infections? Maybe it is a reaction to the meds. I would look for another vet. Even just for a second opinion. Preferably, and this is just me because I believe in natural healing, a holistic vet. They will give you more options. And ask about something called SeaCure. You will have to be careful with the non-allergenic dog food (I think they have more protein because the allergens come from grains so I don't know how it would react). My local pet store owner told me about the SeaCure. It is supposed to help with skin problems and digestion. There was an article on it in Whole Dog Journal, an online publication.

    • ANSWER:
      NATURAL CURE FOR EAR INFECTIONS
Natural Cures For an Ear Infection - More Than Home Remedies
For the pain, put a cup of salt in the microwave for 2 to 3 minutes. Use coarse salt and dump it into a thick sock. The sock is to prevent burns. Apply the sock to the painful ear and it draws fluid out of the ear.

Get a washcloth full of hot water and wring it out. Hold this onto the ear until it cools. The moist heat will increase the circulation in the ear, thereby reducing the swelling and pain.

For the infection, put a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxideicon into each ear, one ear at a time. Keep the solution in for 10 minutes or until the bubbling stops.

Note: Do not put liquids into your ears if you have a ruptured ear drum.

      OR

Start with 1 tablespoon of Pure Almond Carrier Oilalmond oil and add 2 drops of Lavender Essential Oillavender essential oil, 2 drops of Chamomile Essential Oilchamomile essential oil, and 3 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oiltea tree essential oil. Mix this well, then warm the mixture. OR, another good mixture would be to start with 1 tablespoon of Pure Almond Carrier Oilalmond oil and add 2 drops of Lavender Essential Oillavender essential oil, 3 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oiltea tree essential oil, and 2 drops of Thyme Essential Oilthyme essential oil.

Two drops of this warm mixture can be put inside an infected ear three times a day (if the eardrum has never been punctured or perforated). A secondary method to further ease the pain and pressure, rub some of this mixture onto the inside and outside of the ear itself and on the affected side of the neck (the area of the lymph nodes). An even faster secondary method to relieve the pain and pressure is to get the mixture hot, add a few drops of this mixture to a little hot water, dip in a clean cloth, and use the cloth as a compress. Be careful that it is not hot enough to burn.

Note: 1) Red thyme pure essential oil is not suitable for children, epileptics or those who are prone to high blood pressure. 2) Thyme essential oil can induce a miscarriage or harm a fetus when taken internally and possibly when applied externally.

For a person who has had (ever) a perforated or punctured eardrum, follow the above procedures without adding drops inside the ear canal to achieve much of the healing and pain relief.

People that get a lot of ear infections might actually be allergic to dairy products, egg whites, wheat, peanuts or soy. Or, their intake of fatty foods may be too high.

To use these methods with babies, put one drop of the mixture into 1/4 cup of water for diluted strength, and use the diluted mixture as ear drops or for massaging.

Chewing gum that contains Xylitol (like Biotene Dry Mouth Gum, Arm & Hammer Dental Care Sugar Free Baking Soda Gum, Altoids Chewing Gum, or Dr. Ken's Sugar-Free Dental Gum) helps fight bacteria, cavities, plaque and gum disease, and helps whiten teeth. Gum chewing may help relieve pressure in the ear, and the pain from the pressure. Chewing Xylitol gum regularly has been shown to prevent inner ear infections by keeping the bacteria in the mouth from moving up into the nose and ears.

Recurring ear infections may be due to the overuse of antibiotics causing an overgrowth of candida (yeast). That is because the antibiotics kill also kill some good things in our body meant to keep out the bad things. The candida can cause a whole list of problems. In children it usually shows up as diaper rash (in women it is yeast infections), recurrent ear infections, asthma, and a host of other problems. Cutting out sugars and refined carbohydrates from the diet would help a lot, although this is not so easy with kids. So, replace the intestinal flora (a good thing) that was killed by the antibiotics. You do this with acidophilus, which comes in many forms: Acidophilus caplets, Children's Acidophilus chewable tablets, Acidophilus Strawberry Liquid, and Children's Acidophilus Powder.

  47. QUESTION:
What do you think of these piercing choices and the pain?
I would like to get a cartilage piercing and a tragus piercing. I plan to get the cartilage on one ear and the tragus on the next. I already have a double piercing. Do you think that will look good?

For anyone who has already gotten these piercings, how much do they hurt ?
and what can I do as a home remedy to prevent infection, are there any NATURAL home remedies??
How long do these piercings take to heal?

    • ANSWER:
The only issue that I can see about getting one on each ear is sleeping. It hurts like hell to sleep on a fresh piercing and can cause irritation. If you can handle that then I say go for it. They would look awesome.

I don't have a tragus yet, but I do have two cartilage (helix) piercings. The first helix was just fine. Barely felt it. Just like a little pinch. The second one however, HURT. Really bad. lol I think that is because I got them pierced on the same day and right next to each other and my ear was already sensitive from the first one.

To care for cartilage piercings, take 1 cup and water and 1/4 tsp. of non-iodized sea salt and warm up the solution and just dunk your ear in it for 10-15 minutes. Do this twice a day.

Cartilage piercings take a minimum of 4-6 months to heal, some can take over a year. My helix piercings are two months old and still give me some pain and swelling if they get irritated or I sleep on them. Just be sure to clean them with the sea salt soaks I mentioned above and you should have no problems healing.

      Best of luck!

if it was me, I would use the herbpharm mullein garlic compound and the fresh garlic in the ear or garlic oil. In fact last night I was getting an earache stemming from an infected tooth that was hurting. I put some garlic tincture in the ear and slept with a cut piece of garlic between my gum and the tooth and when I woke up neither my ear nor my tooth hurt giving my time to wait for my dentist appointment .but I would keep it up a while even after symptoms go away lest a few bacteria survive and it comes back.

Do not worry about lack of insurance. In many ways it is a blessing in disguise though I know it must be scary. Many allopathic drugs are harmful and this way a person is forced to look for their own natural solution which often is effective, safer and cheaper. It is good when one has to take responsibility for their own health as often this forces them to make the needed lifestyle changes and this does not just placate symptoms but actually improves health.

Once one starts seeing how effective it is, they lose some of the fear of being without insurance but we do need universal health care and single payer in this country like the kind Ohio is trying to get on the ballot. I gathered petition signatures and talked to many desperate people tapped to the max with premiums and copays and deductible or lacking insurance and 2 out of 3 people I approached immediately signed the petition and were hopeful of it passing one day. I doubt it will, unfortunately, due to electronic machines that are easily hackable and scare tactics that will come against it once it is on the ballot and gains the huge amount of signatures it requires.

It is a shame people do not have health care insurance, but with some searching, you will find a natural treatment that works, I am 100% sure of it.

  50. QUESTION:
looking for home remedies for sever ear infections?
I have a double ear infection. Sinus infection. I am on antibotics and a nose spray. My ears are still popping. They itch like crazy. I've been on my medicine for about 2 weeks. I have been told to blow smoke in my ears, pour warm oil in, pour alcohol in them. Any other suggestions. I would deeply appreciate a tried a proven answer.

    • ANSWER:
hi, ouch, ok i suggest vinegar, warm, a few drops in each ear. its a natural aniseptic, and it dries moist ears out, (great for dogs too! and after swimmimg.) it dissolves wax and dirt and wont cause any damage.
if your really going bonkers and want to try, i would be using olive oil with ONE drop of clove oil added. again it is a valuable antiseptic. say to 2 tspns of olive stirred well and applied ONE drop at a time with a syringe. or wiped in with a cotton bud.
if you have any allergies to clove oil...do not do this.
try a test drop on the external ear to see how you react first!
third one is a PURE tea tree oil , with a little water, drops not lots. again it kills many bacteria, inc golden staph, and removes wax and goop, and has itch and pain relieving properties.
      in order. Vinegar!
      then TT oil,
      then clove.
