Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How to tell the difference between a "skin barnacle" and melanoma?
I have a lesion on my skin which concerns me as my father died of a brain tumor secondary to malignant melanoma. My primary care doctor believes it is a skin barnacle and benign, although she is sending me to a dermatologist to have it checked out.

I looked up pictures on the internet of both skin barnacles and melanomas. They look alike to me. So, if it is a skin barnacle, and I get another, should I run to the dermatologist or ignore it?

What does a skin lesion on a ball python look like?
I can see 2 scales on him that look a bit shriveled/discolored. He isn't exhibiting any symptoms. Are these skin lesions?

  3. QUESTION:
are concrete preches for my cockatiel bad for its feet? I know it is good for its nails? wont it cause lesions?
I have always heard that concrete or textured perches are a "must-have" for cockatiels because they can keps its nails trimmed. But I recently read an atricle that said that concrete or textured perches can irritate the bird's feet and can cause lesions and other skin problems? is this true?

    • ANSWER:
Wood and pumice perches are good for cockatiel's feet. They will exercise them and keep them in good condition. Concrete perches are good for keeping the nails trimmed. Sometimes concrete can irritate the bird's feet. You need to keep an eye on your cockatiel's feet if you use a concrete perch. I have one in some, but not all, of my parakeet and finch cages but I've never noticed any problems due to the perch. Don't use sandpaper perches because they are very hard on a cockatiel's delicate feet and can cause lesion, abrasions, and more. It's a good idea to have perches of different sizes and materials to let your cockatiel exercise all parts of its feet.

  4. QUESTION:
I have been diagnosed with Oral Lichen Planus and is very painful. Anyone have any helpful home remedies?
I have been given predisone and triamcinolone to help with the lesions on my skin, but neither do anything for my tongue and I'm at the end of my rope. Any suggestions would be so deeply appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
I've read that aloe vera juice (the kind you can drink) is great for gargling, then swollowing. Also, you should avoid all products with sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and peroxide, so check your toothpaste/mouthwash carefully. I've read that biotene is good. Finally, avoid all acidic foods, such as tomatoes. You can neutralize the acid by adding a bit of sugar.

This is a nasty autoimmune disorder, so the prednisone should help a bit. I'd also suggest finding an online forum/group for this disorder because you'll glean incredible information from people who've had this for a while.

Best to you, and good luck.

  5. QUESTION:
Does a skin exam with a dermatologist make sense for somebody who is brown skinned?
I am brown-skinned and would like to know if a dermatology skin exam makes sense for me. I know that brown-skinned (and black-skinned) people are less prone to skin cancer but nevertheless it is possible for them to get skin cancer. If this kind of screening is useful, how frequent should it be for somebody like me?

    • ANSWER:
You're right - darker skinned people are less prone to skin cancer. But, they can and do get it and unfortunately it's less likely to be caught early in the easily curable stages.

      This is for 3 reasons:
      (1) darker skinned people don't have the perceived risk and so generally don't take as many precautionary actions as more at risk groups may (like using sunscreen, regular skin exams, or getting new spots checked early)
      (2) many skin cancers appear as dark lesions which are harder to spot against dark skin
      (3) darker-skinned individuals are more prone to the type of melanoma that grows under finger and toe nails and on the feet (which are harder to catch for everyone).

So - is screening useful? Absolutely! A derm is going to be helpful in spotting things that are tricky for you to, and I promise they won't think it's weird that you're asking. I'd think that frequency would be the same as recommended for most people (once per year), but I'd suggest going ahead and having and exam now to see what the derm recommends for you.

OR: Here are seven best methods to clear up blemishes.

      Tea-Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a popular home remedy for acne. An essential oil is diluted and applied topically to acne lesions. How is tea tree oil believed to work? Tea tree oil contains a constituent called terpinen-4-ol that's thought to be responsible for most of tea tree oil's anti-bacterial activity. Because tea tree oil can kill bacteria, applying topical tea tree oil to acne lesions is believed to kill Propionibacterium acnes, the skin-dwelling bacteria involved in acne.To treat mild, occasional breakouts.
How it works: Distilled from the leaves of an Australian shrub, tea-tree oil contains antibacterial and anti-microbial compounds called terpenoids that help kill the bacteria that, when trapped behind oil in a plugged pore, lead to acne breakouts. Try Burt’s Bees Herbal Blemish Stick (, burtsbees.com). A roller-ball tube makes for easy application.Studies testing tea-tree oil against the gold-standard acne treatment, benzoyl peroxide, have shown that while the latter works more quickly, tea-tree oil is equally effective over time. And it results in fewer annoying side effects—namely, dryness and redness.

      Sulfur
      If you have sensitive skin.
How it works: A time-tested, gentle acne fighter, sulfur “acts like a sponge to draw oil out of blocked pores,”. This dries up pimples and keeps sebum production in check, helping to prevent future blemishes. Sulfur has a distinct smell—think rotten eggs. Most preparations that use it contain a masking fragrance. However, to play it safe (and avoid scaring off coworkers), apply these products at night.

      Salicylic Acid
To treat and soothe red, inflamed blemishes.Salicylic acid can have a calming, anti-inflammatory effect on pimples. “It also breaks down the ‘cement’ between cells in clogged pores to help unplug them,”
Salicylic acid is less irritating than more potent treatments, so it may be better for those with dry skin. It also tends to work well on stubborn blackheads.

      Retinoids
      Nightly to prevent breakouts.
How they work: Retinoids, which include over-the-counter retinol and prescription-strength Retin-A, reduce acne by altering the oil chemistry on the skin. “They help stop dense sebum from getting stuck within the pores,” says Gross. Without oil deposits, bacteria can’t grow and cause blemishes. Since retinoids can make skin sensitive to the sun, doctors recommend using them at night (and being diligent about wearing sunscreen during the day). To avoid irritation, apply every other evening to start, gradually working up to nightly use. Bonus benefit: Retinoids have been shown to increase collagen production and plump fine lines, making them a good choice if you’re dealing with acne and wrinkles.

      Blue-Light Therapy
If you want the latest preventive treatment—and don’t mind plunking down some cash for it.
How it works: Once or twice a week, you use a handheld device to aim a beam of blue light onto your skin. “Its wavelength hits and kills acne-causing bacteria,” so any brewing pimples never come to the surface. This method will not address existing blemishes. Doctors typically suggest combining blue-light therapy with other remedies, such as topical treatments. To make things easy, consider a blue-light device that comes in a kit. At-home devices are smart alternatives to multiple costly treatments at a doctor’s office.

      Oral Antibiotics
If you experience painful bumps below the skin surface and your pimples leave lasting marks. “Oral antibiotics act from the inside to kill the bacteria that cause acne,” says Keri. They also reduce the inflammation associated with pimples, so deep-seated blemishes hurt less and leave fewer scars.

Doctors usually prescribe them to get a severe condition under control and may then switch to topical treatments. Some antibiotics must be taken on an empty stomach, so read the label carefully.

  9. QUESTION:
How do i get rid of hard skin or corn on my feet?
There seems to be a spawn of hard skin or corn on my feet. These are the symptoms. They are small circular white bumps when at room temperature. But when the doctor froze it, it turned to this huge blister like bump. After getting it frozen, it hurts extremely much when touching it. So after a few days, i popped it, and it reappears. Anyone know what this thing is.

    • ANSWER:
The mainstay of treatment for hard corns is aggressive paring with a No. 15 blade.
Once the central core of the lesion has been removed, corn pads should be used to redistribute the pressure on the affected area.
If the entire central core cannot be pared away, aggressive application of keratolytic agents, such as 40% salicylic acid, may be beneficial.
For painful soft interdigital corns, padding the web space with lamb's wool or doughnut web spacers provides relief and usually allows healing of the maceration.
Patients should be encouraged to wear low-heeled shoes with a roomy toe box, extra width, and orthotic insoles.

  10. QUESTION:
What is the best, non painful way to remove skin tabs?
I tried a few things to remove skin tags including using tea tree oil, nail polish remover and apple cider vinegar. I don't have the nerve to tie them off or cut them off. Is there any remedies that are not painful to remove these skin tabs?

    • ANSWER:
How to Get Rid of Skin Tags

A skin tag, medically known as a cutaneous papilloma or an acrochordon, is merely a small sliver of skin, a benign skin tumor larger and generally flatter than a wart. Except for those tags which hang by stalks (peduncles) like earrings and give the appearance of melting skin, tags make it look as if the victim is growing soft, fleshy scales.

      Skin Tag Removal

skin tag removalTags are surgically removed with a scalpel, electrocautery, or laser. They can also be tied off with thread, thus cutting off circulation and causing them to wither and drop off. And they can be destroyed cryogenically (freezing them). There are also natural oils available commercially that claim to eliminate tags.

      Anal and Vaginal Skin Tags

An extremely common condition, anal skin tabs (tags), are a completely different story because these shapeless lumps and flaps of skin or flesh found at the anal verge are usually associated with other anorectal problems. In fact, they are usually the result of a prior anorectal insult or injury such as the acute swelling of an external hemorrhoid that has not been treated. (Learn how to get rid of hemorrhoids)

Anal skin tabs may be indicators of a more serious rectal ailment that needs medical attention. Anal fissures, for example, small tears in the anal canal, are often associated with sentinel tags – skin tags located at the inferior border of an infection or injury. Tags may also be indicative of a blocked anal gland.

Cleanliness can be a problem with anal and vaginal skin tags. Fecal debris may become trapped under the tag; the problem is multiplied if there is more than one, and infection is possible.

Though anal tags are generally asymptomatic, it’s possible for them to itch, be painful, or cause anxiety or hygienic problems. A proctologist may use an anoscope to identify the cause and also search for other lesions. These would then be removed and biopsied to confirm they are benign. If the tags are small, local anesthetic is injected before excision. Lasers used to eliminate them simultaneously resurface the anal area, thereby producing good cosmetic results. If tags are extensive, the surgery may have to be performed in an operating room under general anesthesia. Either way, the surgery will cause pain postoperatively.

  11. QUESTION:
Can someone help me with my dogs skin irritation?
My dog has some slight hair loss, the hair that is left is getting a reddish tint, and her skin is getting discolorations. The hair that is turning red is only in the spot of the discoloring skin.

    • ANSWER:
      Dog Health:
      Hot Spots

Hot spot(s) occur usually in the dog, and are characterized by red, inflamed patches of skin which can ooze a clear or yellowish discharge.

These areas are extremely sensitive to the dog, and actually are a result of the dog constantly licking, biting, or scratching an area of skin until raw and inflamed. The cause of a hot spot can be a number of things, but usually anything which can result in the release of histamine or other "mediators of inflammation" as in cases of allergies, can start the process.

Stings from insects, scratches, small scrapes or wounds, all can be enough to cause the release of these inflammatory mediators, which start the itch-scratch cycle. What makes a hot spot different from another self-induced skin lesion known as an acral lick granuloma, is that the hot spot is usually created within hours. The acral lick granuloma takes days to months to form.

Also, the hot spot can occur anywhere on the body, and is less likely to occur on the limbs, where acral lick granuloma tends to form mainly on the limbs. Both of these conditions however, can be started from the release of inflammatory mediators in the area on the skin affected.

Treatment of the hot spot usually involves clipping the hair around the area of skin affected. This region is then cleansed with mild soap and water, and topical cortisone products, or anti-histamine products are applied. The main emphasis of treatment is geared towards keeping the dog from scratching at the area, as this is what started the hot spot in the first place.

Sometimes covering the area if possible, or putting a sock over the dog's foot to prevent scratching is advised. Clipping the nails helps as well. If an underlying cause is found such as an allergic condition, treatment with oral medication is then advised. Usually this is associated with multiple hot spot lesions. Single small lesions tend to respond well to topical therapy alone.

Your Pet's Skin & Coat Health

One common malady that occurs with temperature changes is problems with a dog or cat's skin and coat.

Let's define "healthy skin and coat" so we're clear about what is considered "normal." Don't confuse "normal" with "common."

Every day in my practice I see pets that have unhealthy skin and coats (usually due to improper nutrition) - so less than optimum is actually quite "common." I've often thought a normal skin/coat condition was actually quite uncommon! Using your senses of touch, vision and smell you will begin to recognize the character of a "normal" or "healthy" skin and coat

  13. QUESTION:
How can I have less oily skin and less acne?
I've had very oily skin for a long time. I wear makeup and even when I don't, after washing I will be shiny within 10 minutes. I'm also extremely oily/shiny when I wake up. I've also had issues with acne and haven't found anything that works for me, so I have bad redness and scars from that also. I'm too insecure to not wear makeup around anyone and I really would like to improve my skin and be more comfortable.

It just seems unhealthy and I really want healthy, good looking skin. I drink lots of water already and eat lots of veggies. Does anyone have any worthy products, vitamins, or successful remedies they would recommend?

  14. QUESTION:
What causes skin cancer and what are the effects?
Well, I am 13, and I have gotten two severe sunburns this past month. My mom said they were pretty bad, and they can cause skin cancer in the future. Is this really true? If not what are the real causes of skin cancer? What are the effects?

    • ANSWER:
      Skin Cancer Causes

Ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, most commonly from sunlight, is overwhelmingly the most frequent cause of skin cancer.

Other important causes of skin cancer include the following:

      * Use of tanning booths

      * Immunosuppression—impairment of the immune system, which protects the body from foreign entities, such as germs or substances that cause an allergic reaction. This may occur as a consequence of some diseases or can be due to medications prescribed to combat autoimmune diseases or prevent organ transplant rejection.

      * Exposure to unusually high levels of x-rays

      * Contact with certain chemicals—arsenic (miners, sheep shearers, and farmers), hydrocarbons in tar, oils, and soot (may cause squamous cell carcinoma)
Regarding your mother's comment, people who had at least one severe sunburn early in life have a greater risk of developing skin cancer. Mom is right!
Treatment for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma is straightforward. Usually, surgical removal of the lesion is adequate. Malignant melanoma, however, may require several treatment methods, including surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

  15. QUESTION:
How good is manuka honey for your skin and wellbeing?
I keep getting rashes and absesses and wondered if manuka honey would help? I have read about its properties but unsure how to use it. I bought an 18+ 250g jar. Its expensive so didnt know wether to just put it directly on my skin or drink it??? How much or how long do i put on my skin or consume? Can anyone help? I have a low immunity at the moment so vulnerable to infection but i want to use alternative medicines rather than anti biotics. Thank you

    • ANSWER:
It is quite worthless having absolutely no medicinal or therapeutic effects when taken orally. Applied locally to a small local lesion, like all honey it is bacteriostatic. Of course applying it more generally will just make you a sticky mess.

  16. QUESTION:
What is the affect of skin cancer on your body?
I know how skin cancer is detected and treated, but what exactly does it do to your body when you get. Please explain in detail and links will be very appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
Quite simple. Basal and Squamous cell carcinomas destroy tissues at the surface of the skin, and if left untreated, can develop deep lesions that can become problematic. Its unlikely you would let them get that far along without doing something about them.

Melanoma, on the other hand, is a silent killer. Its hard to detect because it has no real symptoms, outside of shape, size, and color. Generally it has to be diagnosed by a doctor. Treatment is quite simple, if caught in time, it is simply surgically removed.

If left untreated, and it metastasizes into the body, then a serious problem exists that might not be fixable.

General rules, if its the size of a pencil eraser, has irregular borders, has black or blue coloration, is associated with a mole, or it can be quite flat, and/or recent changes have occurred, you should see a physician very soon.

  17. QUESTION:
Can a reliable histology examination of an abnormal skin formation be done a year after the removal?
If an abnormal skin formation is removed how soon the histology examination must be done so that the results are considered reliable?
After what period of time following the removal of an abnormal skin formation, the histology examination becomes a not reliable diagnostic method?

    • ANSWER:
Standard procedure is to place the removed tissue in formalin immediately after removal, which stops the degradation processes. After formalin fixation, the tissue is embedded in a paraffin block. There is no time limit on the usefulness of a formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue sample. Some special stains (immunohistochemical stains) are sensitive to "under fixation". But 24 hours in formalin should be sufficient for a skin lesion.

      a) Crab apple- Make a paste. Apply all over the face and neck. Leave for 20 minutes. Wash with lukewarm water. It is a rich source of alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) which tone, soften and moisturize dull oily skin.
      b) Sandalwood powder- Add a few drops of water to half a tablespoon of the powder. Apply the paste all over the face, neck (in upward and outward direction) and hands. Avoid eye area. Let dry. Wash with tepid water. This reduces wrinkles and fine lines while fighting acne and blemishes.
      c) Lemon juice, flour, turmeric powder- Make a paste. (Use all purpose flour) Plain yogurt can be used in place of lemon juice. Apply all over the face except the eye area. Let dry. Rinse. The acids in the lemon juice treat dark spots on the face clearing the complexion. Turmeric brightens the look. (Lemon juice might cause a tingling sensation). Feel the fresh and oil-free skin afterwards.
      d) Wheat germ oil- Massage your face with the oil. Leave it on for 1 hour before washing with tepid water. Natural vitamin E, a powerful anti-oxidant, in this oil prevents skin damage caused by UV rays and environmental pollution. It is great for softening the skin.
      e) Milk- It is particularly necessary for individuals with oily skin to keep their skin clear otherwise it has a tendency to form acne lesions making the skin patchy, discolored and rough. Presence of oil makes the skin sticky thus attracting dirt from the environment clogging the pores. Clogged pores mean increased oil secretion. Milk is an excellent oil free cleanser and it doesn’t dry out the skin. Oily skin has open and enlarged pores. Wash your face several times throughout the day with milk so that the pores are not clogged with sebum/oil. It is very important to wash your face before you go to bed at night. Make-up residues can be the worst enemies of the skin. Mix 2-3 drops of sandalwood or lavender oil with 2 tablespoon of milk and massage gently all over the face cleaning up the dirt, grime and makeup. Pay special attention to the eye area. Do not stretch or over-pull the delicate skin around the eyes while removing eye make-up. Gentle massage improves blood circulation and gives your face a healthy glow. If you have broken skin, avoid stretching in that area to prevent spread of infection.
      e) Honey- Moisturizing the skin is essential as we quickly lose the skin’s natural moistures making it rough and irritated. Dry skin needs a lot of moisturizing but oily skin needs moisturizing too. A skin that is regularly moisturized has fewer fine lines, a smooth texture, less surface flaking and radiates a healthy glow. Honey is an excellent natural moisturizer. Apply a thin layer of honey all over the face. Wash it off with tepid water after 15 minutes. Avoid moisturizing in humid weather. Judge the amount of oil in your skin and moisturize accordingly.
      f) Rice powder and corn flour- It is absolutely necessary to exfoliate with a gentle scrub about 3-4 times per week to balance the skin’s moisture. Rice powder is an excellent natural exfoliating agent. It gives the over-stressed oily skin a new vitality and a healthy radiance.
Make a paste with 1 tablespoon rice powder, 1 tablespoon corn flour and a few drops of lemon juice. Add water if necessary. Apply all over the face and gently massage in upward and outward direction in a circular motion. The rice powder removes the dead cells that accumulate in the upper layer of the skin thus cleaning up the pores. The sharp, citrus smell of the lemon refreshes and stimulates the nerves while the chemicals in the juice has a bleaching property that treats dark spots left by the various outbreaks of the oily skin.
      g) Potato and cucumber slices- Close your eyes and put 2 slices on top of the eyelids. The natural juices remove dark circles around the eyes.
      h) Almond meal and lemon rind- Make a facial scrub with 2 tablespoon almond meal, 1 tablespoon ground lemon rind and 3-4 tablespoon milk. Gently scrub your face and get rid of the excess oil.

Where can I find photos of genetic skin disorders in infants on the internet?
Skin birth defect appears as pinkish with rough surface like a wort but much much larger. Covers large part of hand. MD says there is no cure.

    • ANSWER:
Sounds as if you're dealing with a hemangioma. You might want to search that. In addition, Susan Bayliss just wrote an excellent pediatric dermatology book; perhaps you can find that online. It would be best to have a pediatric dermatologist evaluate the mark for you, as they are the experts in this field. The expert in pediatric vascular lesions, in the U.S., is Elaine Siegfried, MD., if that is the type of lesion that it turns out to be.

I was wondering what ways there are to improving the skin besides the usual using creams, moisturisers, cleansers and toners. Instead with something deeper such as diet, exercise and nutrition?

    • ANSWER:
Supplement with zinc! Zinc is known for its aging-fighting effects. In addition, it can also help with skin lesions -- many people claim that it helps them with psoriasis and eczema. Even if your skin is healthy, though, it can improve it.

Personally, my skin has gotten substantially better-looking since I started taking zinc. I can't guarantee it will work, but it's worth a shot! I got a 100-pack of zinc pills at Walgreen's for 4 bucks, so I mean, hey, worst case, you're out four lousy dollars. I recommend it.

  24. QUESTION:
What is the white powder on the fresh oranges at Walmart?
I'm more curious than anything else and don't worry since I thoroughly scrub my fresh fruit and vegetables before eating them. However, while buying naval oranges today, I was forced to pick through them to find the ones with the least powder. Some were dusted quite heavily.

Does anyone know what the white powder is? Possibly insecticide?
I'm certain it is nothing harmful or Walmart would not be selling them.

Am I going to grow oozing boils and puss-filled lesions on my skin while I cough up blood and chunks of raw flesh?

    Thanks.

    .

    • ANSWER:
It's mold because the oranges have been washed and sprayed and don't dry off as quickly because of the dimpling of the peel, so this white mold forms. It is harmless, just wash it off.

i know that skin is an organ, but what are the other vital organs in the body that can be affected by skin cancer?

i have look this up and i cannot find anything that says a specific organ, other than the skin.
this is for an essay i'm writing for school.
any help is appreciated : ).
    thanks in advance : ).

    • ANSWER:
In general most skin cancers will spread if not protected from bright sunlight. Basal cell cancer is one of these. It occurs on the skin surface & spreads to surrounding tissue. Squamous cell cancer has lesions that become open sores & will penetrate the skin & metastasize. It commonly involves the tongue & mouth.Melanoma is the bad one. This one develops from moles & unlike the others will metastasize far from the original site.It travels & spreads by the lymph & blood vessels.Paget's tumors are a rare skin cancer that involves the breast tissue, mostly the milk ducts & nipple areas. It also can be seen as a red, crusting rash in the groin, anus, and sweat glands.

  26. QUESTION:
Is it possible to have a skin cancer on the head that goes away?
Is it possible to have a skin cancer on the head that goes away. I have a small spot on my scalp that hurts to the touch, but there is nothing visible. I am balding and I occasionally I will get pimple like things on my head from sweating, etc. I don't remember if I had a pimple in this exact location, but it is possible.

    • ANSWER:
There are lots of possibilities that could result in what you describe. Skin cancers can go through cycles of activity where they are much more noticable and symptomatic and then appear to heal. The best thing for you to do is note where this lesion is and, should it recur with any degree of regularity, get it checked. Most skin cancers are easily treated, some with creams (over a couple months), and not fatal.

It is possible that this is just a blocked sweat gland or hair follicle. Don't worry and pay attention - that's it.

  32. QUESTION:
Why does there seem to be a stigma about having pale skin?
My skin is really pale and I love it (I'm Irish, we don't get heaps of sun here) but I often see girls make negative comments about people if they have pale skin, why?

    • ANSWER:
As a woman of Irish descent myself, I can tell you that we do have pale skin (most of us, anyway). I truly believe that we have to accept what we've been given, protect it, and work with it. Believe me, I think dark skin is beautiful too! African / Indian / or Latino--just gorgeous. A tan was always enviable when I was younger, but I can count on two hands the young women I know who have been diagnosed with pre-cancerous skin lesions from tanning beds and overexposure at the beach by the time they've reached late 30s. Pale folks need to use more sun block to avoid damage (wrinkling) and ward off skin cancer (in my family), and remember not to bake in the sun! 35. QUESTION:
I used goodwinol ointment to treat demodectic mange and its turning the skin black?
The hair loss has spread only slightly since we started using the ointment. The hair is kinda beginning to grow back in those areas but the part where is started has not been growing back and now the skin is black.

To further describe the spot it started as a small circle then it got bigger. When I said it spread I meant that the circle got bigger. It's only in that one spot so I am pretty sure it's localized still.

    • ANSWER:
Hmm...what you describe sounds like a secondary infection (bacterial or fungal) if it is growing. I am not familiar with the 'goodwinol' in terms of its effectiveness. If it does not work for you I have a suggestion.

First, let me give you a little background on mange in case you are not familiar with this problem and/or for the benefit o others who may read this post.

Mange is a skin condition caused by tiny mites that you can't see with the naked eye. There are three types of mites that attack dogs most often: demodectic (not contagious and may itch or not), sarcoptic (very contagious and extremely itchy) and cheyletiella (contagious and mildly itchy). Vets can do a deep skin scraping to detect the presence and type of mite.

The typical symptoms of mange as the condition progresses include hair loss and scaly or crusty skin. If the mange condition causes itchiness, scratching opens the door to secondary skin infections (bacterial or fungal) that may cause an unpleasant odor. Unfortunately, mange does not go away on its own and the lesions continue to spread so it should be treated as soon as possible.

Regardless of the type of mange, in order to cure it you need to treat with a medication that kills the mites.

The mange medications most often prescribed by vets contain pesticides and other toxic chemicals that are detrimental to your dog's health with resulting health issues that you will have to face sooner or later. These medications include Ivermectin (also known as Ivomec) and Amitraz (also known as Mitaban). See the links that follow for toxicology information. It is always advisable to check the veterinary drug database for side effects of any medication prescribed by your vet http://www.drugs.com/vet/

Thankfully, there are a number of effective alternative treatments out there that are safe and natural at a reasonable cost that will kill the mites. You can easily do some research in the Internet to find out about these and compare your options.

I prefer the 'spray type' because it is inexpensive, very effective, convenient to use (no mixing and no mess), and it is natural and harmless to pets and humans.

      Hope this helps.

  37. QUESTION:
How do you get paler skin naturally?
I'm quite tanned, but I hate it and I would like paler skin. I don't want any thing that's chemically altered like getting the whitening injection thing that Michael Jackson got, but maybe if someone could give the name of a cream or something.

    • ANSWER:
Number one rule: stay out of the sun. Like Mario Lopez, he's a Mexican descent, but he won't even stand outside in the sun to do a photo shoot for a tanning lotion. Julianne Moore is one of those, who like to protect her skin from AGING. She walks in the shade. I grow up in Asia for 13 years, so I was dark, but it took more than 13 years to the color I have now.

Your tan will fade after several months even years, depends how old you are now.

I've been protecting myself from the sun since I was 9.

      1. Because I don't want to look like a farmer.
      2. Because I get too hot.
      3. I want to look like movie stars & models, they have blemish-free skins.
      4. I don't want to look like an old prune or get moles on my neck & face like my aunts.

No matter, I still got Discoid Lupus (Google it), caused from the sun. It took 12 years for them to fade. Tried all kinds of lotions that were prescribed to me, and none of them worked. More & more now I protect myself and I take my wide brim hat everywhere I go, or use an umbrella. Floppy hats are back in style. In Asia, they use umbrella all the time. Here in the States, people started to catch on, and I see people walking w/umbrella, they are used on the beach, and they sell patio umbrellas. It was invented for a reason and also to protect us from getting skin cancer. Wear long jackets, or denim a lot. Even inside a car, the heat alone from the sun can tan anyone.

While in HS, I frequently wear a floppy hat. Thank God, those are now back again! I've use a wide brim hat, even in the car to avoid glare. Long drives I put a blanket over the window, and my umbrella comes with me everywhere.

Sunscreen will not protect you from getting burned.

Sunscreen will only make your moles or freckles larger, bumpier & darker, if you have them already. Not just moles, but freckles, skin tags, seborrheic keratoses, Discoid Lupus, Bullous Pemphegoid, Lentigo (Google search them) and lentigines -- nearly always non-cancerous skin lesions

Sunscreen will not protect you from skin cancer.

Sunscreen will not protect you if you have allergies, I never thought I had allergies!

Sunscreens also discolor your skin - for ever!

Sunscreen blocks Vitamin D as well.
      RE SKIN LIGHTENING:
The FDA have banned 23 more whitening products. Google it. About 17,600,000 results.
The reason cited for the proposed ban is that studies in rodents show "some evidence" that hydroquinone may act as a carcinogen or cancer-causing chemical, although its cancer-causing properties have yet to be proved in humans. Hydroquinone also has been linked with the medical condition known as ochronosis in which the skin becomes dark and thick. Dome-shaped yellowish spots and grayish-brown spots also are observed in ochronosis among black women and men in South Africa, Britain, and the U.S. Ochronosis has been observed in conjunction with hydroquinone use even in persons who have used hydroquinone-containing cosmetics for a short time. Some studies also report abnormal function of the adrenal glands and high levels of mercury in people who have used hydroquinone-containing cosmetics. For these reasons, hydroquinone has already been banned in Japan, the European Union, and Australia.

Any skin-lightening products containing hydroquinone would be considered new drugs, according to the proposed FDA regulations. The products would require FDA approval before being sold to the public and would only be available with a doctor's prescription.

  38. QUESTION:
How many months/years does it take for a sunburn to become skin cancer?
I have heard that sunburns do not become skin cancer immediately. How many months or years does it take for a sunburn to become skin cancer?

My friend recently had a sunburn. Her sunburn was not healing and it became worse, so she went to a dermatologist 3 months after the sunburn happened. The dermatologist found that she has skin cancer. Could it be that she had skin cancer all along, and the recent sunburn did not cause her cancer?

    • ANSWER:
      I got from wikipedia that
Skin cancer is most closely associated with chronic inflammation of the skin. This includes:

      1. Overexposure to UV-radiation can cause skin cancer either via the direct DNA damage or via the indirect DNA damage mechanism. UVA & UVB have both been implicated in causing DNA damage resulting in cancer. Sun exposure between 10AM and 4PM is most intense and therefore most harmful. Natural (sun) & artificial UV exposure (tanning salons) are associated with skin cancer.[citation needed] Since sunbeds cause mostly indirect DNA damage (free radicals) their use is associated with the deadliest form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma.[citation needed]
      2. Chronic non-healing wounds, especially burns. These are called Marjolin's ulcers based on their appearance, and can develop into squamous cell carcinoma.
      3. Genetic predisposition, including "Congenital Melanocytic Nevi Syndrome". CMNS is characterized by the presence of "nevi" or moles of varying size that either appear at or within 6 months of birth. Nevi larger than 20 mm (3/4") in size are at higher risk for becoming cancerous.
      4. Skin cancer is one of the potential dangers of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation.

Skin can be protected by avoiding sunlight entirely, or wearing protective clothing while outdoors. Skin cancer is usually caused by exposing skin to UV rays excessively.

      about the treatment
Most skin cancers can be treated by removal of the lesion, making sure that the edges (margins) are free of the tumor cells. These excisions provide the best cure for both early and high-risk disease.

For low-risk disease, radiation therapy and cryotherapy (freezing the cancer off) can provide adequate control of the disease; both, however, have lower overall cure rates than surgery.

Mohs' micrographic surgery is a technique used to remove the cancer with the least amount of surrounding tissue and the edges are checked immediately to see if tumor is found. This provides the opportunity to remove the least amount of tissue and provide the best cosmetically favorable results. This is especially important for areas where excess skin is limited, such as the face. Cure rates are equivalent to wide excision. Special training is required to perform this technique.

In the case of disease that has spread (metastasized) further surgical or chemotherapy may be required.[11]

Scientists have recently been conducting experiments on what they have termed "immune- priming". This therapy is still in its infancy but has been shown to effectively attack foreign threats like viruses and also latch onto and attack skin cancers. More recently researchers have focused their efforts on strengthening the body's own naturally produced "helper T cells" that identify and lock onto cancer cells and help guide the killer cells to the cancer. Researchers infused patients with roughly 5 billion of the helper T cells without any harsh drugs or chemotherapy. This type of treatment if shown to be effective has no side effects and could change the way cancer patients are treated

about how many month it's depend on how your skin can deffend from the ultraviolet radiation.
sorry for my bad english. But sorry about your friend

  39. QUESTION:
How can I tell the difference between dry skin and scabies?
It has been very cold for a long time and the air is dry, but I was possibly exposed to scabies by a friend a few weeks ago. I am itching like crazy! Especially when I am finishing my shower every evening. When I get out of the shower I have red, blotchy rashes on my body, but they go away as my skin cools. What would you do?

    • ANSWER:
The previous posters are mostly correct. Scabies will be most prominent in the folds and creases of your body. Additionally, the lesions will not appear blotchy as your have. Rather, they will leave a distinct zig-zag scarring pattern on your skin where the organism burrows itself.

I agree that you may be having a sensitivity issue with your soap or a cosmetic product. I recommend that you discontinue the use of all of your cosmetics and buy new soaps. If this doesn't correct your problem see a doctor for sensitivity testing.

  40. QUESTION:
How long should I keep skin lesion removals covered?
I had 2 skin lesions removed on Saturday, and the nurse failed to give me written instructions - she handed me a sticky note with the Polysporin I was to use, and said to keep it covered, and change bandages 3 x's daily. She said also to do this for 2 weeks until my follow up visit. Friends are telling me that it should air out, and I should keep it uncovered sometimes. And of course the doctors can't return my call fast enough. There is no leakage, bleeding, etc. but I want it to heal properly without infection for sure! I thank you for your time!

    • ANSWER:
My husband is a doctor, and we have four children. Whenever they have scrapes or sores, he tells me to keep them uncovered at night while they are sleeping, or during the day if they are just playing inside. If you are going to be outside where you might get dirt or germs in the sore, then it should be covered.

  41. QUESTION:
Did people die of skin cancer before sun creams were invented ?
It seems that the people who get skin cancer - are those who regularly sunbathe - so we have pinned the cause on the Sun.
But what if it's the use of sun creams for years that causes the cancers ?

    • ANSWER:
Skin cancer is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found on the epidermis (the outermost layers of skin) so the tumor is usually clearly visible. There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

The most common symptoms of any type of skin cancer include changes in the skin that do not heal within 4 weeks, a spot or sore that continue to itch, blood, discolored skin, and changes in existing moles such as ragged, notched or blurred edges of mole or enlargement of mole.

Signs and symptoms of Basal cell carcinoma: Basal cell carcinoma usually looks like a small, slow growing shiny pink or red lump. Sometimes small blood vessels can be seen within the tumor. They usually appear on face, scalp, ears and shoulders. If left untreated, they tend to bleed frequently. This form of skin cancer is least deadly and with proper treatment, it can be completely cured within short period of time.

Signs and symptoms Squamous cell carcinoma: Squamous cell carcinoma is usually pink, thickened patch on sun-exposed skin. If left untreated, it tends to become crusty, ulcerate or bleed and it may develop into large mass. Squamous cell is second most common skin cancer; it is fatal but not as fatal as melanoma.

Signs and symptoms of Melanoma: Most melanomas are brown to black looking lesions with irregular border. Signs that might indicate a malignant melanoma include change in diameter, shape, color or elevation of a mole. Other signs are the appearance of a new mole during adulthood on trunk, neck or head or pain, itching, inflammation, ulceration or bleeding in existing mole.

  42. QUESTION:
How do you make the skin on your arms smoother?
My upper arms seem normal, but they feel as though little itte-bitte pimples are covering the surface. How do you clear the skin and make it smoother?

    • ANSWER:
i think i know what you're talking about. i have the same thing. it's little bumps, and they don't hurt, but they're sometimes dry and almost always annoying.

Keratosis pilaris (KP, also follicular keratosis) is a very common genetic follicular condition that is manifested by the appearance of rough bumps on the skin, hence referred to as chicken skin. It most often appears on the back and outer sides of the upper arms (though the lower arms can also be affected), and can also occur on the thighs and tops of legs, flanks, buttocks, or any body part except glabrous skin (like the palms or soles of feet). Less commonly, lesions appear on the face, which may be mistaken for acne.

      Classification
Worldwide, KP affects an estimated 40% of the adult population and approximately 50%-80% of all adolescents. It is more common in women than in men.

There are several different types of keratosis pilaris, including keratosis pilaris rubra (red, inflamed bumps), alba (rough, bumpy skin with no irritation), rubra faciei (reddish rash on the cheeks), and related disorders.

      Symptoms and signs
Keratosis pilaris occurs when the human body produces excess keratin, a natural protein in the skin. The excess keratin surrounds and entraps the hair follicles in the pore. This causes the formation of hard plugs (process known as hyperkeratinization). The painless bumps are skin-colored, although they can become red and inflamed at times. Usually many plugs form in an area, causing patches of rough, bumpy skin. This gives the skin a sandpaper or goose flesh appearance. This may be more severe in the winter or times of low humidity, which causes the skin to become dry. It will eventually resolve on its own.

Many KP bumps contain an ingrown hair that has coiled. This is a result of the keratinized skin's "capping off" the hair follicle, preventing the hair from exiting. The hair, then, grows inside the follicle, often encapsulated. The hair can be removed, much like an ingrown hair, though removal can lead to scarring.

Keratosis pilaris may be hereditary. It is present in babies and continues into adulthood, but is uncommon in elderly people. It is most obvious during the teenage years. KP is prevalent in those who are overweight, or have atopic dermatitis, ichthyosis, or descend from Celtic backgrounds. Keratosis pilaris occurs in otherwise healthy people.

      Treatment
There is no cure for Keratosis pilaris, but treatment is available. One option is to use a loofa to remove the dead, dry skin. Another option is to use a dermotologist-prescribed cream or lotion that should be applied daily. The best lotions for this condition would have urea, 15% alphahydroxy acids, or Retin A in them. Over-the-counter lotions work as well and should be applied after showering, as well as several times a day. The lotions are often soothing and can help improve the appearance of the skin. Dermotologists also recommend mild peeling agents, or alpha hydroxy acids, that may open up the plugged follicles. Antibiotics may also help in some cases where the bumps are red and badly inflamed. To temporarily reduce redness but not roughness, pulse dye laser treatment or intense pulsed light (IPL) can be done.

Although it may clear up with treatment, reccurance of KP is very likely. Therefore, treatment should be continued regularly. It may take several months to years for the condition to completely clear up.

A dermotologist or physician can usually diagnose a patient for Keratosis pilaris by visually inspecting the patient's skin.

  45. QUESTION:
HOW do I finally get rid of my deep under the skin pimples?
Ive had bad acne for as long as I can remember, and it only gets worse during my time of the month. I have the type of pimples that lay deep under the skin and NEVER go away. They do not hurt but they are very ugly and red and are mostly on my cheeks.
I have tried countless products, but none ever work. PLEASE help me! Home remedies would be nice as well as products that are known to work!
My pores are also visible on my cheeks and nose. What can I do to get rid of that?

    • ANSWER:
Here are some tips that might be helpful:
      1) Tea Tree Oil
      2) Lemon juice
      3) Apple cider vinegar
      4) Bamboo extract

Tea tree oil is a popular home remedy for acne. It is an essential oil that is diluted and applied topically to acne lesions.

How is tea tree oil believed to work? Tea tree oil contains a constituent called terpinen-4-ol that's thought to be responsible for most of tea tree oil's anti-bacterial activity. Because tea tree oil can kill bacteria, applying topical tea tree oil to acne lesions is believed to kill Propionibacterium acnes, the skin-dwelling bacteria involved in acne.

Applied lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to face or you can drink it through using it in water a few drops a day. Will help with both acne, and scars as well. Also another way you can get rid of acne is by taking bamboo extract something I started when I had the problem really does work. Hope this works for you.

OR: Here are seven best methods to clear up blemishes.

      Tea-Tree Oil
      To treat mild, occasional breakouts.
A roller-ball tube makes for easy application.

Studies testing tea-tree oil against the gold-standard acne treatment, benzoyl peroxide, have shown that while the latter works more quickly, tea-tree oil is equally effective over time.

To treat and soothe red, inflamed blemishes.
Salicylic acid can have a calming, anti-inflammatory effect on pimples. “It also breaks down the ‘cement’ between cells in clogged pores to help unplug them,”

Salicylic acid is less irritating than more potent treatments, so it may be better for those with dry skin. It also tends to work well on stubborn blackheads.

      Benzoyl Peroxide
      To spot-treat a blemish fast.
How it works: This top acne treatment is an antibacterial agent, killing the bacteria that cause pimples to form, says Gross. Because benzoyl peroxide is so powerful, it helps blemishes go down quickly; just make sure to use a non-comedogenic moisturizer first to minimize dryness. Initially, it can cause dryness and redness. Also, “it bleaches towels and clothes,”.

  46. QUESTION:
Could skin lesions be a demonic manifestation?
In the Bible, demoniacs did such things as run around naked, foam at the mouth, babble or be mute, be thrown to the ground in convulsions, and involuntarily curse. Sometimes the demons would make the people try to hurt themselves. Is there any reason to believe that skin lesions could be a demonic problem as well?

    • ANSWER:
This could be a number of things: maybe an allergic reaction, a form of skin cancer, or an irritation. My best advice is to see a dermatologist if you don't see it going away in the next 2 or 3 days. I know it might be scary but you want to be sure this isn't something serious, and if it is, going to the doctor sooner rather than later will give you a better chance of a speedy recovery.

Also, try to stay away from medical websites because what many say about certain skin cancers may worry you unnecessarily. Best of luck!

It might be so many different things and one of them is Pitiriasis Alba which is a benign condition.

      http://dermnetnz.org/dermatitis/pityriasis-alba.html

Another benign condition that causes light colored patches of skin is Leucoderma.

Unfortunately, only a doctor will be able to tell you for sure.

This other link will show you types of skin cancer.

Some many conditions can cause similar symptons. Just think about a headache; it can be caused by stress or a tumor.

How many times I have used the search engine to diagnose myself or other people? It has caused me/us more harm than good. That's why doctors and medical tests exist.

      Good luck!
